Peak pretentiousness. It really didn't age well
>>
It wasn't good at the time either
>>
>>220588591
It’s still good. It was always good. Was waiting for the Harvey birdman cameo but even still 9/10
>>
>>220588591
You had to be there
>>
>>220588591
It just doesn't work in a post-MCU world.
>>
Still don't get the ending. If he killed himself why did Emma Stone see him flying?
>>
I thought it was a beautiful and captivating movie when I saw it in theaters. I have not rewatched.
>>
>>220588591
My high schooler ass got duped into thinking this was capeshit, seemed that way from the trailers. I got trolled big time, I didn't like it one bit. I'm putting this movie in the cinephile category along with the likes of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood: if you like not just movies but the culture and background about them you might like this stuff, to everyone else it just flies over their head
>>
>>220588591
I found the big trippy fake action sequence or whatever to be very obnoxious the first time watching it, but the 2nd time around it felt short enough to not really be a problem.
>>
>>220588761
she went cray cray
>>
>>220588803
Kek you don't have to know shit about movie culture to understand it. If anything it helps to know a bit about theater and theater acting.
The only requirements about movies it has is that you know what a superhero movie is, and the concept of a washed up actor.
>>
>>220588591
In what way is it pretentious?
>>
It predicted Cape slop audiences and slop audiences in general perfectly

>"You guys know if you crank out any toxic piece of crap, people will line up and pay to see it"

>"You are not doing this for the sake of art, you are doing this because you want to feel relevant again"

>"Because I hate you and everyone you represent. Entitled, selfish, spoiled children. Blissfully untrained, unversed and unprepared to even attempt real art. Handing each other awards for cartoons and pornography"
>>
>>220588873
Those things are stuff cinephiles will be more inclined to care for, it requires an interest for the medium in and of itself, for anyone else who was expecting to see a story they won't appreciate this.
>tl;dr
It's niche
>>
>>220589010
It doesn't follow the usual formula so it's pretentious.
>>
>>220588591
It's a great first time watch, especially because of the tracking shot gimmick, but it doesn't really warrant a rewatch.
>>
>>220589010
it insists upon itself
>>
>>220589065
just kill yourself. you're incredibly stupid and yet think yourself elevated for some reason.
>ironman 2008
>birdman 2014
6 years of marvel films between them.
ohhhh wow, did you know the incredible seer that made airplane PREDICTED all those 70s disasters films!
>>
>>220589093
it's not difficult to follow. it's a 90s style "independent film-like" behind the scenes look at theatre, and what happens to some actors.
the superhero thing was entirely secondary, it was more about him being known for a role and that role being round his neck as a thing he can't lose but also something that he looks for with hope that it might come again and save him from mediocrity and the lowlifes he's presently surrounded with.
i think it was poorly advertised, focusing on the superhero thing when that's nearly irrelevant.
>>
>>220589065
>fuck you for caring about capeslop
>now here's some oscarslop about how being a thespian is literally like going to war
the one shot gimmick is the cgi spectacle of the midwit artist
>>
>>220590681
Was it rape?
>>
>>220588591
>pretentious
There isn't a single word in the universe that's misused more than that one.
>>
Why does criticism of this movie upset film students so much?
>>
>>220588591
i thought that was the point. he was pointing out how pretentious theater acting is, especially with nortons character who is a total ass the entire time. which is why its such a big deal that he fucks his daughter AND his on stage wife

Found the gunntards
>>
went to the cinemaplex with my buddy when it came out because it had michael keaton the kino machine in it
there was a moment where he's walking around on the street and there's a backing track with drums or something, then the camera pans to a drummer playing the drum track. we both looked at eachother, pissed ourselves laughing and promptly left. it was the first film i've ever walked out on

>IT WAS ALL SHOT IN ONE CONTINUOUS TAKE.
Bullshit.
They backpedaled that as it slowly rotted in release like cream cheese on summer tarmac.
>>
There were these two faggots jerking each other off and my girl and I were so glad when they left during the scene when Keaton locks himself out and goes running through time square. I mean, who does that?
>>
>>220588591
Whiplash was the much better 2014 film
>>
>>220593395
>Parker!
>Was I rushing or was I dragging.... nevermind, page 1 story, spider man sucks at playing the drums.
>>
>>220588591
it was a good movie, but it was kind of like "ok now this character has a deep speech, ok now this character has a deep speech, ok now this character has a deep speech." The shit that was about the play falling apart was great.

I love pretentiousness and arts films. I never got this one. Found it very meh.
>>
>>220590739
Are you ok Anon?
>>
>>220589065
Also the line calling it cultural genocide. I found it really funny that RDJ responded to him basically saying "wow thats a big term for a beaner" which inarittu got mad over but no one else cared for some reason
>>
There need to be more movies about broadway theater.
>>
>>220588591
Nah, it's kino. The bar scene with Keaton and that old bitch critic is hilarious
>>
>>220588591
It's kino you pleb

1000% this

reaching my limit on stupidity and jeets and cretins are crawling in from every side.
planet of the apes
>>
>>220588591
It was good until Keaton put the batsuit back on for that shitty Flash movie, tainting the whole film
>>
>>220588761
He was finally free was a bird. That was his last act or something. Properly just me that I thought the actress of Kaitlin Olson throughout the film lol

>The bar scene with Keaton and that old bitch critic is hilarious
It's unironically more true with the banter between the artist and the critic nowadays than it was back in 2014. Most satisfying scene in the movie.

It was certainly true in 2014 for theater criticism which has always had the problem of critics who care more about making themselves seem smart and witty than actually telling the reader what the show is, what it's trying to do, where it succeeded at that and where it failed, so the reader can decide for themselves if they want to see it.

He's since retired, but the long running lead theater critic at the NY Times was this guy Ben Brantley who was just a fucking old man that would go to see big musicals and complain that they were "exhausting". I disagreed with his reviews so many times to the point where I asked did we even see the same play, that I started just automatically taking the opposite opinion of his review, and most of the time that resulted in me having a great night on Broadway.

Here's a typical example of that cantankerous old fuck's wrongheaded reviews for a show I really enjoyed

And here's a random broadway review from 2014 so you can see it was just as bad then

>It's a great first time watch
very true

>but it doesn't really warrant a rewatch
ehhhh... I've rewatched it twice over the last decade, it's like a once every 5 years movie, and you have to be in the mood to watch it for sure
