Was this the last smoking kino?
Smoking rates dropped by 90% when it became associated with ass rape
>>220589982Why does Corso smoke in the 9th gate? Ive just heard its style and maybe even smoking near books makes him a rebel but Ive also seen a coment somewhere that breathing smoke and fire makes him a dragon. And It almost feels like something is there. Dragons and satans students. Dragons and knowledge. He does not horde gold even though he chases it at the beginning though.
>>220590178I heard something about how he stops smoking at some pivotal part of the story and doesn't smoke again for the rest of the movie, but I haven't watched it since I heard that so I can't confirm. The smoking is one of my favorite parts of that movie, though. I love how he (and the one twin brother) just absolutely do not give a shit about smoking and ashing all over these priceless books. It's a nice little setup for when Kessler tells him not to smoke in her library, too.I'm sure there's some thematic significance to the smoking. That movie is full of little thematic puzzles and shit like that.
>>220590311Best I can come up with is its a noir trope and it marks him out as a mercenary detective rather then a serious occultist or even book collector as the smoking is bad for books. There is also the idea that smoking means he breathe smoke and fire like a dragon with the last engraving being the women with the dragon like the final scene maybe. Satan is supposed to be a fire breathing dragon or at least something with fire and sulfur breathed out. Its also a boon aesthetically to the movie.
rags status?
>>220590664In England fag means cigarette
>>220590568Yeah, don't all the engravings happen to Corso in some capacity throughout the movie? If so, then the last engraving showing her riding a dragon would make sense if Corso is supposed to be the (smoking) dragon and she literally rides him at the end.
I haven't smoked in a week because it finally started killing me. God, I just want to smoke.
