Hypothesis: The reason why Marvel movies were so popular with neurodivergent people is because they're written specificially not to trigger people with ADHD. This style of writing, a strong hook and tight pacing, is generally a good way to write movies anyway, but movies that are written this way generally make a lot more money than movies that are not written this way. This doesn't just apply to scifi/action franchise movies, the minute you start triggering the relatively small proportion of the audience with ADHD you've effectively halved your potential box office take. Or to put it another way, neurosafety, especially in regards to ADHD, doubles your box office. This suggests that the real weakness in the most anemic genres of today, political thrillers, romance, etc. is not that people don't like those genres, but that the people who make those movies don't understand how to write for a neurodivergent audience and pay a penalty of outlandish size for not doing so, which is interpreted at the simple level as lack of interest in those genres, and an outsized interest in comic book movies. It also explains the failure of Disney+ to capitalize in any meaningful way on the success of the MCU, because if there is one thing those shows are not it's well paced.
