I have a theory that the first season of a prestige streaming show is written by industry veterans. People who have been writing professionally for decades. But those writers are expensive. So once a show develops a fanbase, all the vets are thrown out and a bunch of dopes straight out of film school are brought in. This new generation of writers have been living on easy mode. They never struggled or met someone with a different perspective. And they were all raised by algorithms. So that’s why most streaming shows fall off a cliff after the second season.

I'm not gonna lie, I have a hard time watching the final season with Annie lookie like a big troll. I can't listen to anything she says I'm just overwhelminglybpreoccupued with how fucked up her face looks.
If it's some disease, then I feel sorry for her but if she actually bogged herself I've gotta ask why. She was cuteness personified.
But even if it was a disease, you gotta figure, you get into a 100% looks-based business like acting, Rule #1 is you're only as good as you look. Looks are everything, it's your raison d'etre. Like Hyman Roth said, "this is the business we've CHOSEN".

Think of it like a rookie contract in sports. When youre a rookie, a team can sign you for peanuts because you're "unproven" and have no leverage. Then if it happens that you're an absolute stud, you're able to demand considerably more, get potential suitors who could meet those demands, etc. The weight of leverage shifts towards the individual because of their performance.

I figure its not too far off from writing contracts. You write an absolute hit that makes the studio bank, and youre able to demand higher pay, and many studios are so cheap theyll just go nah fuck off we'll just get chatgpt to do it.

it's more the fact that the long waits between renewals now means it's impossible to maintain a stable writer's room
back when shows were 24 episodes a season and shot for 8 months a year, they'd get the renewal order while the season was airing and after a short break everyone would come back to work on the next season because it was a predictable schedule, and writers only left if they found a better gig
now that streamers only order 6-8 episodes and wait until the season has finished airing before deciding to order more, it could be 8 months after the writers on the previous season finished their work before they know if the show is coming back, meaning most of them have already moved on to new projects in order to pay bills, meaning a near 100% staff turnover between each season besides the showrunner
