Are you not paying attention?
The Civil War is constantly in the background of the film.
What I mean is that you have the search for lost gold by the 3 main characters in tr foreground and in the background you have the bigger picture of the time and place the action is set.

When you have like 500 extras who you can force to work building a bridge if you want and access to explosives why not film a bridge blowing up scene? Wouldn't you?
