What movie has THE most realistic depiction of effective martial arts?

Non-documentary, of course.

Boxing>any Asian mysticism bullshit martial “arts”.

Asians literally invented martial arts as a cope for being insanely weak and tiny. Karate, taekwondo, tai-chi, kungfu etc literally only works if the opponent obeys your moves and plays into them. If it worked any fighting champion in the world (kickboxing, boxing etc) would employ the techniques but they never do

Ong-Bak, The Raid, old Jackie Chan and Jet Li movies
They don't make them like that anymore.
And you know why? Because good martial arts sequences depend on being able to do shit that is genuinely risky and hard on the body. Shit that western productions just straight up won't allow because of stuntman safety standards.
That's why the best action movies came out decades ago, from countries on Hollywood's periphery. They depend on life having little enough value for everyone in a production to be okay with some below minimum wage mook possibly getting severely injured or crippled for mere entertainment.

I can't remember the last martial art, or hell, action movie that is worth a fuck.

>>220613309
However I must admit that the change of camera angles makes something that could pass for "mundane," on screen if shot for a movie from one angle. You have to remember some of this is akin to dance, more so than a fight.

We need to do away with this gay mma shit and return to no rules deathmatches. You always hear this cope about how what's used in mma are the only real effective combat techniques but it's still very structured artificial shit filled with rules.

Unarmed competitions are also fake and gay. At no point in the existence of the human race has anyone chosen to fight unarmed if a weapon were available. We need to revive gladiators. If this wasn't such a shit reality then we would have worldwide gladiator games like the Olympics.
>>

You are not wrong, but the risk of death is just too high. There is a reason cops shoot people for running up to them with a even the lamest weapons.
>>
>>220614282
One, you're conflating two separate statements, you dishonest little faggot. Two, you're talking about an institution that spanned a thousand years and the frequency of death varied wildly depending on the era.

>In the earliest munera, death was considered a righteous penalty for defeat; later, those who fought well might be granted remission at the whim of the crowd or the editor. During the Imperial era, matches advertised as sine missione (usually understood to mean "without reprieve" for the defeated) suggest that missio (the sparing of a defeated gladiator's life) had become common practice.
>Under Augustus' rule, the demand for gladiators began to exceed supply, and matches sine missione were officially banned; an economical, pragmatic development that happened to match popular notions of "natural justice".
>A gladiator might expect to fight in two or three munera annually, and an unknown number would have died in their first match. Few gladiators survived more than 10 contests

>Dude it was all kayfabe.
Yeah, I don't know what that means. You may not be aware of this but Ancient Rome is by far the most studied civilization in human history and we have countless detailed accounts of exactly what went on the arenas.
>George Ville, using evidence from 1st century gladiator headstones, calculated an average age at death of 27, and mortality "among all who entered the arena" at 19/100. Marcus Junkelmann disputes Ville's calculation for average age at death; the majority would have received no headstone, and would have died early in their careers, at 18–25 years of age.[ Between the early and later Imperial periods the risk of death for defeated gladiators rose from 1/5 to 1/4, perhaps because missio was granted less often. Hopkins and Beard tentatively estimate a total of 400 arenas throughout the Roman Empire at its greatest extent, with a combined total of 8,000 deaths per annum from executions, combats and accidents.

>THE most realistic depiction of effective martial arts

There is a Japanese movie called The Twilight Samurai that seemed very authentic to me. The sword fight scenes aren't too exciting but that is of course realistic

Jackie Chan movies. No the choreography isn't usually realistic, but his fight scenes are still "realistic" because he depicts himself as a highly skilled martial artist and acrobat who still gets tired, hurt, and needs to find creative ways to even the odds by using the environment.

Also in the Zatoichi series of films the fight choreography isn't realistic but the main actor Shintaro Katsu was deceptively athletic and extremely fast with his prop sword which made him seem believable as a master swordsman

The movies Macbeth, Rob Roy, and The Duellists have the most realistic fight scenes depicting European martial arts ie sword fighting, but it's debatable how "effective" the actors' skills are because they weren't trained athletes or fencers. They feel gritty though

The Mark of Zorro has the best swashbuckler-type highly choreographed fencing scene that still manages to feel realistic

There isn't much in the realm of realistic street fighting/brawls. Of course theres the famous alley scene from Collateral if you consider firearms handling martial arts. Also a forgettable movie called Pride and Glory that has a fist fight scene often called one of the most realistic

Jackie Chan founded group called Sing Ga Ban, which was instrumental in shaping stuntman work in action movies.
You could spot their reoccurring members in various movies well into 2000s. Lack of solid choreography is what really hurts modern action movies, I don't remember last time there was anything impressive on screen in past 8 years.

Raid 2 sucked for one reason. Every fight was portrayed as 1 guy vs a crowd, but it was really just 1vs1 where the extras are perpetually running towards the main character. Every time the camera changed angles, the extras would be reset to 10m away. Forever running into the fight, but never making it. Only the actual 1v1 fights were good.

The problem I think is not in the martial artists but everything surrounding it. I watched pic related, everyone here is clearly talented but either
>the choreography is baffling at times, this is most obvious in the introduction minibus fight scene that's supposed to be this comedic scene of the main character shitting on some random thugs but most of the time it just doesn't make much sense with them trying to pull him inside and him doing some weird non-chalant stuff. They also jump a bit too hard into the MMA meme and people just end up doing dolphin dives just to double leg shoot someone and after a while it just gets dumb as fuck when they try to do stylized grappling.(the penultimate fight against the two fishermen is an exception and is honestly my favorite fight of the movie)
>Too much fucking editing, camera cuts aside it's also the dumb digital effects like zooming in and out on a hit or panning to the direction of a hit to sell the impact
>retarded amounts of folio
>the characters have to be superhuman so you get someone who has just been in an extended brawl with two dudes who have knocked him out twice suddenly nosell everything including glass on the ground when his fighting style in that scene was mainly ground based. It also makes the comedic action less impactful if they're just omnipotent and can fuck everyone up without issue instead of having him struggle by using everything on hand and it naturally ending up being comedic.

The stuntwork and choreography is some of the most amazing ever to appear in a movie, but the absolute best part of the fight starts at 1:13:21

The time implies this happened at the end of a particularly vicious fight. It's really just the finishing blow

Weight classes existong proves that yes
Bigger guy wins over smaller guy, most of the time

The night comes for us is fucking kino, the last track with Low Murder playing... disturbingly kino.

>Karate, taekwondo, tai-chi, kungfu etc literally only works if the opponent obeys your moves and plays into them
>boxing > all
boxing literally only works if the opponent obeys your moves and plays into them, lmao. any fucking "sport" is crippled by rules and regulations. actual fighting is extremely cutthroat, and usually decided rather quickly. while size has an advantage, it is not the end all be all. somebody trained in ANY martial art has a distinct advantage over somebody not trained at all. however, strictly adhering to "the moves i learned for this art/sport" is a fool's game anyway. actual fighting is chaotic and brutal.

I got in a street fight with a coked up guy and I believe that front kicks are the best meta, got a good stomp on his quads and he was dead meat
In the end it's best to just stay out of it bros
>>
>>220608882
>boxing
>in a real fight
LMAO
>>
>>220621499
Is that the shitty one with the woman beating the main character in a fight? That was trash. The main actor does good action though,

Trained gladiators, sure.

As for all the other slaves/captured dudes/Christians not so much.

Body slams by bigger opponents seems to be game changers. Logins of gif is the fight ending because of a body slam.

worth reading about how English boxing used to be. they had kicks and throws in it too, it was only later as rules progressed that they limited it to punches alone.

worked in virtual fighter 4 evolution too it was the hardest character the play since he had several stances and a bunch of feints, but it made him genuinely unpredictable and difficult to deal with once you'd learned how to use his moves.
guess that means they succeeded in the way they'd implemented it.

>>220614163
I dunno, i saw a pretty cool flying kick done on a real vid when a chinaman saw a negro hit a chinese woman.
someone must have it, he just runs in from offscreen and does a flying knee/kick sending the guy into a wall and crumpled on the ground.
was awesome
>>
raid 1 >>>>raid 2

>any Asian mysticism bullshit martial “arts”.
yeah no fucking shit. that one mma chink xu xiaodong exposed the entire chink traditional martial arts scenes years ago. no such thing as kung fu except for being yoga tier exercise. any muay thai fighter would kill any chink practicing chinese trad martial arts
>>
>>220625239
This
I didn't like how the second movie had those gimmick characters straight out of a video game like the baseball bat guy.
I also prefer the simple story and the desperate atmosphere of the first movie.
>>
I bet not a single person that's posted so far even owns gloves.

I own motorcycle gloves.
Does that count?

I think it's about strength + reflexes, both seem to culminate in (kick-)boxing.

He's a brown retard most likely they take any chance they get to hate asians
>>

>+ reflexes
Are you retarded? You have no reflexes to defend your legs
>but head fakes
Aren't going to work without gloves and unless you have a gentleman's agreement to not grab.
>>
>>220613230
The first Raid is kino. The second goes a little too far with the action.
>>
>>220612623
Even then chinese have sanda(Kickboxing) and Shuai Jiao(Grappling). I think the Wushu and Kung fu stuff is popular because it seems mystical in the west.
>>
>>220629842
Donnie is up there with the best fight choreographers shame most his movies are awful.
>>
>>220610029
if professional fights didnt have weight classes, yeah, probably

This dude's smile is terrifying, he doesn't even look human. He's like a skinwalker wearing a human suit. I'm surprised he swung at the guy and didn't bite his jugular.

Spl and Flashpoint are all you need, how even stallone and swarzenegger were only in a handful of actual good movies
