Is this really the best they could've done?
>>220615906Frigosian is just a ripoff of the dog from battlestar galactica
>>220616023that thing always creeped me out
>>220615906Its fascinating how you can just tell they didn't get Star Wars.
>>220616346I bet people were lining up to get an abednedo or a blarina toy after seeing these movies. or maybe a hard to find gabdorin.
>>220615906Not only did they lack creativity, it was also a case of "we need to make a Star Wars alien similar to an already existing one but 25% different so that we don't have to pay royalties to its creation."Look at the Ottegan, for example - it's clearly supposed to be a not!Ithorian - pic related.
>>220616468It's canonically genetic offshoot of them
>>220616468That's the legitimate reason why they didn't just adapt the post-RotJ EU. If they did they'd have to pay large sums to everyone involved in those books and side materials, so they just scrapped it all into "legends" and made a new continuity while liberally borrowing from existing material as needed. And when that (now) failed they resorted to going back to lifting stuff from the EU wholesale like Thrawn, but they can't even do that right.
>>220615906It's obvious the creature designer gave zero shits. Even the less creative people could make something better than this.
>>220616654They gave zero shits but a lot of shittos.
>>220616581Most of it was work-for-hire. Which lead to a freakout from Disney when they found out the Alan Dean Foster novels were not, in fact, work for hire and they still owed him royalties, and they tried to pull some bullshit that the sale of Lucasarts somehow voided his contract.
>>220617301The main problem is that there were thousands upon thousands of people involved in the EU material with major and minor contributions and they'd have to recheck each contract. Even if most of them signed away the rights to what they created it could cause an avalanche of bad publicity if they started bitching about it in public and demanding more money. It would be bad optics to deal with that no matter who's in the right so it was easier to wipe the slate clean and start fresh.
