>>220634884I haven't seen a movie in theaters since Hacksaw Ridge, but I'm gonna go see this at the kinoplex tomorrow after my aa meeting. I'm buying into the hype. I have high expectations.
>>220635038The Resurrected 1991 is pretty comfy.I'd still love to see a decent dedicated necromancer film though. Like he can just straight up summon corpses to rise and causes havoc in a small town.
>>220635099Dont do that anon! Wait until Teenage Sex and Death hits theatres August 7th
>>220634884What's the go with the director. Something is up with him
>>220635099lol. an aa buddy was around saturday and we hyped ourselves up and saw mortal kombat 2. now ill probably have to help him move some furniture around
>>220635168I already told you I'll watch it. Don't push it.
>>220634884>Be honest, it's goodYou're right it is good but not quite great
how many of you jump in theater when it gets scary
>>220635135damn straight. plenty of sword and sorcery movies, but none of them really go deep into necromancy. personally, as far as video games movies go, i could REALLY use a sir daniel fortesque movie. probably directed by raimi
>>220635099Great, have fun
Both of the new Evil Dead movies are going to be shit. Especially Wrath which has that small mouthed performative-mustache'd director who said "watching Fellini" is what got him into filmmaking, as if he was being interviewed by the Criterion closet. I despise these kinds of highbrow hipsters.
>>220635197But why would you watch cuckslop tomorrow?
>>220635262Hell yeah. I would pay good money for Laika to do a medieval stopmotion actually.
>>220635240I saw The Forgotten in theaters with a girl when I was 13 and when they got beamed up through the ceiling, I nearly jumped out of my seat. It gave her the ick.>>220635311I keep hearing that Inde Navarrette gives an incredible performance, and I want to see it.
>>220635240literally anyone will do a tiny body jerk when jumpscared, there's a reason it's called that and how it exploits a mechanism of your bodyIt's rare nowadays for me to be TRULY jumpscared like a big body movement thoughbeit, mostly because after decades it's easy to see when most jumpscares are coming, the REALLY good ones are the unexpected as fuck ones which are still rareStill think the best way of doing it is generating tension then a sign of relief and then you wait a bit because after it's rather telegraphed after a calm moment in most horror, wait a bit and THEN you drop itOr you just do it out of fucking nowhere like the woman dropping from above in REC
>>220635316cushing is like "that woman is being far too salacious"
>>220634884read the plot on wikipedia, sounds fucking terrible.

>>220635735What's good about it?What the general theme, is there something supernatural/occult?Please answer because I shan't be watching if it's just about a schizo roastie
>>220635916It was goofy in places but I appreciate that this movie at least tried to use practical effects.
>>220635856first you will be mashed into a fine paste
>>220635958I like the part in the basement when everything is red and all hell breaks loose. Final Bad reminded me of Event Horizon a little bit.
>>220635916It's honestly kind of boring and pretty poorly written. I wouldn't recommend it.>is there something supernatural/occult?Yes

>movie starts off with a full orchestra score with opening credits moving across a murder scene
What are some other movies like this that feel like watching a nightmare unfold? Where things don't really make sense but are just sort of accepted as reality. Bonus points if they're Italian.

>>220635856The Blob could make you fit.Speaking of boring premises....
>>220637305I saw Suspiria much earlier, and have only seen Inferno once. The main thing I remember is the awesome underwater mansion at the beginning.
BIG GUY ALERT
10/10 slopfestWould recommend
Want to watch it but explain what makes Obsession so good, why is everyone sucking its cock?
>>220639074Does a good job at making you feel very uncomfortable throughout its entirety.Balances comedy and horror very well in a way that most movies aren't able to.Inde Navarrette's performance is incredibly good, reminiscent of Isabelle Adjani's from Possession. I'd say those three points sum it up pretty well.
>Make worst reviewed and least financially successful film of the recent spate of Youtuber horror moviesDoes the suffering never end?
>>220639262>Cowboy Bebop T-shirt
>>220639262still surpassed my expectations desu. though apparently he had Flanagan script doctor it.
Where do we think this is going to clock in on the kinometer?
>>220639594This is normieslop for sure6/10 at best
>>220637305Suspiria has amazing visuals with the crazy colors everywhere and an amazing soundtrack, Suzy is a likable lead character. Inferno's imagery is strong but not to the same level as Suspiria's. The soundtrack as a whole is much weaker, and the best track is used for just a simple scene of Mark crawling through tunnels. Inferno goes through a couple of leads early on before settling on Mark, a clown who has no idea what's going on. I love both movies but Inferno doesn't come close to Suspiria.
>>220639386I don't know how low your expectations must have been for Shelby Oaks to exceed them.
>>220639594>AAAHHHH EMPTY ROOMS WITH YELLOW WALLS HELP MEEEEEEEEit's going to be shitty boring zoomerslop
>>220639594The short was excellent. But 90 minutes of yellow rooms will tax normies like Skinamarink did. Not saying it was good, just that it's a bold vision.Sounds like the first 30m will be padded out with characters finding the backrooms. That means it leans on the characters and I think it'll draw away from what the short got right, which was the fantasy it was you in there, and you were all alone. If he can come up with a brilliant and disturbing ending, then maybe all will be saved.

>>220639866Well his short was a videogame render. I think it worked, as a VHS type effect. But the film I think is gonna be all high def.

Some people are overhyping it way too much, though. I'm a little sick of horror films that "examine relationship dynamics" or whatever, because I don't find that subject matter particularly scary. But Obsession is admittedly one of the better entries into that sub-genre.>>220639594Probably slightly higher than wherever the FNAF films are right now.

>>220640380>Edge Of Tomorrow That's one of my all time favorites too, extremely re-watchable. But it came out in the 2010s. What I meant to say is Obsession is my favorite movie of the 2020s. Favorite move of the past ten years would be Uncut Gems
>>220639971The Friday the 13th prequel TV series is finally coming out this October, I have no hopes for it being any good, but they apparently "retooled" it twice, so the behind the scenes has been a shitshow apparently
>recommend Obsession to my sister (horror fan)>she hasn't seen it yet but won't stop watching tiktoks of itI can't control her but this makes me so sad, she is diluting her experience by taking away all the surprise. She says it just makes her more excited for the movie but it upsets me. I can't do anything about to (>noooo! You have to enjoy things the same way as me!) but it is frustrating. And of course she won't see it for weeks and will have the whole plot spoiled by the time she does. I guess I just want her to have the same great experience I did, having only seen the teaser of Bear on the phone in the car. What do you think?
>>220641055I went to the theater not long ago and this guy in front of me was howling in laughter at this terrible comedy trailer that showed all the plot beats of the film. Meanwhile I'm trying to hum theme-tunes while the horror ones are playing so I don't hear plot details.I have accepted that perhaps the majority of people are just mentally alien to me.
>>220639979>Hokum was betterGenuinely curious as to why you think this. Hokum was competent and had some moments, but I am really over the 'horror as a metaphor for trauma/guilt' trope.
Haven't seen Hokum but Oddity was pretty disappointing so I have low expectations

>>220641801Mid 80s
>>220641801late 80s
>>220634849ginger snaps 4k came today
>>220641616The sequel is just a ripoff the original Scream but with uncensored bare tits and more blood, not bad, but not great
>>220641801I like all 80s slashers since most of them had either a cool killer or naked women, you don't get that as often anymore
>>220641745not just color, but contrast.modern cameras can basically see in the dark and be brightened later. meaning they don't try and light scenes in the moment and do it in post. but you can't magically make Bava in post.plus the "taste" these days is grey.also cgi cannot be lit truly realistically, and lots of films use it as background.
>>220641616I find it interesting that the year after directing the sequel the dude made Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl. Talk about a tonal shift.
>>220641854Yay!
>>220642020As an afficianado of both horror and sappy coming of age romances I can say that one is pretty good. Better than It's Kind of a Funny Story but not quite as good as Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist imo

>>220642640it seems to have peaked with episode 4, 5 was still good but 4 was really good
>>220642640Yeah I have actually been enjoying this quite a bit. It has successfully spooked me a couple of times and is funny as well.
Somehow, Bob returned
rewatched house last nightnot great but still funny
>>220641425I just personally found it to be much more rich with details, hidden or otherwise, more visually captivating, more strongly written and fleshed out. I found the characters more interesting than the characters in Obsession, which btw, I still liked. They are both in my top 2 or 3 horror films of the year thus far. >really over the 'horror as a metaphor for trauma/guilt' tropeI can see that point, although I don't know if trauma/guilt was so much used as a metaphor in Hokum as much as it was a theme or outgrowth of the story. But I get that trauma and grief are very overused themes in many recent horror movies. Regardless, that theme still hits me on a more personal level than the tragic love story of Obsession, so I suppose that's my bias.
>>220642923I wonder how that's gonna work, exactly.
>>220642923>Meta slasherScream and its consequences have been a disaster for the slasher genre.
>>220634849finally got around to watching terrified, it wasn't bad, kinda above average at best, but nowhere near as good or as scary as people claim it to be. though i really liked every scene with the boy and thought the movie would've been better had it focused more on him, cause every scene with him was genuinely creepy

>>220639074you will find many people saying things like "I've never hated a protagonist so much, I wanted to beat him with hammers the whole time". part of what makes it so disturbing for people is the inversion of the symbolic order hierarchy - such a confident beautiful agentic woman being subjugated and abused by the lowest cowardly worm.the conceit just has a lot of interesting subtext wrinkles that it plays with and gives you stuff to chew on and argue about. leaves a lot to interpretation without getting bogged down in lore and explanation.it's magical realism but very grounded in reality and yet you feel like you never really know what the limits are on what's possible which is unfortunately rare in horror and keeps you destabalized while it terrorizes you. I was just listening to an Evil Dead commentary with Bruce Campbell, Sam Raimi, and Rob Tapert talking about the ins-and-outs of getting the movie made, and it is really weird hearing Bruce breaking Ash kayfabe, and just talking like a real human being. It's like when I found out wrestling was fake as a kid, or like that time Howard Stern played Gilbert Gottfried's real voice left on their answering machine so people knew what he really sounded like.
>>220653227groovy
>>220641616 i hear the original story is real, they didnt find the killer because some good ol boy possibly some cops i forget killed him outside of town for possibly another reason. he was stealing shit or somethign . anyways.
Will this be better than the Anderson ones?
>>220654444>director says he never watched or played any of the Resident EvilsIt could go either way
>>220654568He's played the games he just hasn't seen the movies
I know its more proper to ask over in /t/, but anyone ever seen like a collection of SyFy or Shutter originals? Felt like asking here since these threads generally get more traffic than over there
Who would win between these two monster babes
>>220654958my vote is for the vampire. She was ridiculously attractive during those movies.
>>220654958Selene by far
>>220655207Lower tier De Palma but worth it to see Nancy Allen in lingerie.
>>220654958doesn't Selene become the strongest being in her world after she reawakens from death in that one movie set in the ice?Alice is just as good as Wesker when she's at her best
>>220655287God I love women.
>>220655358Holy areola batman!
>>220652260The theater's going to be the best experience of it, innit? Might as well see it there, especially if you liked Oddity and Caveat. It's more of the same
Oddity was shit.
>>220655207Dario De Palma
>>220655687I think Caveat is the best of the trilogy, but everyone's got a different opinion of which is the best and which one sucks.
>>220652235>doesn't like The Howling>doesn't Like Silver Bullet>doesn't like Dog Soldiers>likes Ginger Snaps 3
>>220655772Based. Blow Out and RoboCop are absolute kino.
>>220655873Meant for >>220655358, but still applies I suppose.
Watched this yesterday. Not a masterpiece, far behind Poltergeist and Chainsaw, but still some charm to it.
>>220656022Fun fact: Tobe Hooper has never directed a bad movie.
>>220656098Eh, I wasn't impressed by Eaten Alive or Spontaneous Combustion.
>>220656098He directed the Eye story from Body Bags starring The Ham-Man himself, Mark Hammill.Overly long and I did not enjoy it compared to Carpenter's two contributions.
>>220655687Yeah. I watched Oddity the other day and couldn't believe that this was the movie I'd heard so much about from people. Almost fucking nothing happens in that movie, the blind lady just sits around with the golem that does fuck all, there's a brief haunting scene, and then she accuses the husband and falls in a hole and the movie is essentially over. What was even the point? Almost nothing happened. The scariest part was at the very start, everything after was just people sitting around and talking about things that aren't remotely frightening. It's not even a very good mystery, you're just told the solution with zero buildup or clues given and then the movie is basically over. Awful movie, can't believe people think it's better than Caveat (a movie where things happen ).
Incredible practical effects and vibes in this movie, but would it have killed them to hire even one person who can fucking act? The Asian girl especially is gutter trash.
>>220656573>would it have killed them to hire even one person who can fucking act?You can either have god tier practical effects or competent acting.
>>220655687Agreed, don't get the hype. Is Hokum better?
>>220655287Wouldn't call it low tier at all (entire 80/90's output was high-tier, even with shitty material he directs the hell out of it. have you seen his post-2000 garbage like Redacted? like late Argento, it's sad to see), the first third with milfy Dickinson without dialogue is pure De Palma kino. Gets weaker after the elevator scene and character switch, dumb and obvious final twist, but still plenty of cool moments.
>>220656664Haven't seen Hokum yet but while Oddity put me to sleep, I thought his first movie was pretty good.
>>220656573The Asian girl was actually a competent actress by my estimation; she just played an aggressively irritating stupid little bitch.
Legitimately a perfect movie. Why is this so overlooked in Carpenter's filmography?
>>220656685>have you seen his post-2000 garbage like Redacted?I haven't, but there's no way that Dressed to Kill is on the same level as Body Double, Carrie, Blow Out, Phantom of the Paradise, or Carlito's Way. Even his more mainstream stuff like Mission Impossible and Scarface mog it and I'd also put Sisters, Hi Mom!, Obsession, and Femme Fatale over it. Outside of the museum scene and Nancy Allen, the movie just does absolutely nothing for me even though it's well made. The twist is pretty obvious and he would perfect the voyeuristic style of filmmaking in his later movies. It might be a highlight in other careers, but De Palma is actually one of the best directors of all time (truth nuke that not many people are willing to accept), so I would indeed consider it low tier during his golden years.
>>220656981Who overlooks it? I completely agree it's a perfect movie, it's flawless from start to finish.
>>220656981Thank you, I'd overlooked this movie
>>220657111Everyone overlooks it, it's almost never considered among his greats despite being a masterpiece in its genre. I don't think it was very popular when it came out either.
>>220657111I almost never hear it brought up. It's always The Thing, Halloween, or They Live. It might be his best movie. I wish that Sam Neill was in more movies.
>>220656483I heard it was a "murder mystery movie where a woman uses cursed objects to solve a mystery and get revenge" and was interested in that premise alone but man what a slog. The only item she remotely uses in the entire movie is the golem which does nothing until 20 seconds at the very end and fails at what it's supposed to do anyway. The only interesting part was when the masked guy first shows up in the vision because I thought it was either a ghost of some sort or otherwise going to be a much bigger deal than it was.
"nothing happens" plotfaggotsnothing is happening in your life either so why not do something about it and kys

Caveat was ass. If you think nothing happens in The Oddity, wait til you try to watch Caveat.
>>220656981one of the best lovecraftian horror, the ending for me it's amazing. Another one that it's mostly forgotten is "the resurrected", it is not perfect but deserves to be watched
>>220655852>projecting your own insecurities i have seen every werewolf movie ever made. you can watch all the genuinely good ones in a single night. the rest are either comedy gold or shoestring shlock. every other monster gets hundreds of flicks, zombies, demons, ghosts, frankensteins, fagula...yet not werewolves.
>>220658005i think the problem is that it's hard to make a good werewolf prop even with a moderate budget and if you go full cgi they look like shit
