Both of the new Evil Dead movies are going to be shit. Especially Wrath which has that small mouthed performative-mustache'd director who said "watching Fellini" is what got him into filmmaking, as if he was being interviewed by the Criterion closet. I despise these kinds of highbrow hipsters.

literally anyone will do a tiny body jerk when jumpscared, there's a reason it's called that and how it exploits a mechanism of your body
It's rare nowadays for me to be TRULY jumpscared like a big body movement thoughbeit, mostly because after decades it's easy to see when most jumpscares are coming, the REALLY good ones are the unexpected as fuck ones which are still rare
Still think the best way of doing it is generating tension then a sign of relief and then you wait a bit because after it's rather telegraphed after a calm moment in most horror, wait a bit and THEN you drop it
Or you just do it out of fucking nowhere like the woman dropping from above in REC

Does a good job at making you feel very uncomfortable throughout its entirety.
Balances comedy and horror very well in a way that most movies aren't able to.
Inde Navarrette's performance is incredibly good, reminiscent of Isabelle Adjani's from Possession.

I'd say those three points sum it up pretty well.

Suspiria has amazing visuals with the crazy colors everywhere and an amazing soundtrack, Suzy is a likable lead character. Inferno's imagery is strong but not to the same level as Suspiria's. The soundtrack as a whole is much weaker, and the best track is used for just a simple scene of Mark crawling through tunnels. Inferno goes through a couple of leads early on before settling on Mark, a clown who has no idea what's going on. I love both movies but Inferno doesn't come close to Suspiria.

The short was excellent. But 90 minutes of yellow rooms will tax normies like Skinamarink did. Not saying it was good, just that it's a bold vision.
Sounds like the first 30m will be padded out with characters finding the backrooms. That means it leans on the characters and I think it'll draw away from what the short got right, which was the fantasy it was you in there, and you were all alone.
If he can come up with a brilliant and disturbing ending, then maybe all will be saved.

It's a solid horror film, so if you like horror, you should see it. Some people are overhyping it way too much, though. I'm a little sick of horror films that "examine relationship dynamics" or whatever, because I don't find that subject matter particularly scary. But Obsession is admittedly one of the better entries into that sub-genre.

I can't control her but this makes me so sad, she is diluting her experience by taking away all the surprise. She says it just makes her more excited for the movie but it upsets me. I can't do anything about to (>noooo! You have to enjoy things the same way as me!) but it is frustrating. And of course she won't see it for weeks and will have the whole plot spoiled by the time she does. I guess I just want her to have the same great experience I did, having only seen the teaser of Bear on the phone in the car.

What do you think?

not just color, but contrast.
modern cameras can basically see in the dark and be brightened later. meaning they don't try and light scenes in the moment and do it in post. but you can't magically make Bava in post.
plus the "taste" these days is grey.
also cgi cannot be lit truly realistically, and lots of films use it as background.

I just personally found it to be much more rich with details, hidden or otherwise, more visually captivating, more strongly written and fleshed out. I found the characters more interesting than the characters in Obsession, which btw, I still liked. They are both in my top 2 or 3 horror films of the year thus far.

>really over the 'horror as a metaphor for trauma/guilt' trope
I can see that point, although I don't know if trauma/guilt was so much used as a metaphor in Hokum as much as it was a theme or outgrowth of the story. But I get that trauma and grief are very overused themes in many recent horror movies. Regardless, that theme still hits me on a more personal level than the tragic love story of Obsession, so I suppose that's my bias.

>He has been a zombie for many years now
Dracula 3D wasn't nearly as bad as made out to be, but maybe I was just glad to see Argento, Simonetti, and Tovoli reunite so long after creating the best horror film of all time. It cracked me up seeing people on Reddit freak out over Argento directing a scene where his own daughter is naked. Guess they never saw Stendhal… Sleepless is also a genuinely good film but that was 25 years ago. He's been a zombie nearly as long as the Simpsons kek

I can't argue with that. Honestly, I went in with low expectations and left pleasantly surprised considering I always thought Argento fell off in the 90s. Max von Sydow is also underrated as always.
On the other hand, Giallo (2009) was so bad Argento should've pulled an Alan Smithee. The fact that Adrien Brody had to take the other producers to court in order to get paid in full is more interesting than the film itself. Argento at his absolute lowest.

>>220651647
It happens. I remember Ron Howard saying something similar about his own daughter as well.
Personally, Maya is a looker and I'd never object to seeing Uma Thurman's daughter nude.

you will find many people saying things like "I've never hated a protagonist so much, I wanted to beat him with hammers the whole time". part of what makes it so disturbing for people is the inversion of the symbolic order hierarchy - such a confident beautiful agentic woman being subjugated and abused by the lowest cowardly worm.

the conceit just has a lot of interesting subtext wrinkles that it plays with and gives you stuff to chew on and argue about. leaves a lot to interpretation without getting bogged down in lore and explanation.

it's magical realism but very grounded in reality and yet you feel like you never really know what the limits are on what's possible which is unfortunately rare in horror and keeps you destabalized while it terrorizes you. Inde's vocal work and microexpressions really sell this and are uncanny - and no not just le creepy smile

Yeah. I watched Oddity the other day and couldn't believe that this was the movie I'd heard so much about from people. Almost fucking nothing happens in that movie, the blind lady just sits around with the golem that does fuck all, there's a brief haunting scene, and then she accuses the husband and falls in a hole and the movie is essentially over.

What was even the point? Almost nothing happened. The scariest part was at the very start, everything after was just people sitting around and talking about things that aren't remotely frightening. It's not even a very good mystery, you're just told the solution with zero buildup or clues given and then the movie is basically over. Awful movie, can't believe people think it's better than Caveat (a movie where things happen ).

Wouldn't call it low tier at all (entire 80/90's output was high-tier, even with shitty material he directs the hell out of it. have you seen his post-2000 garbage like Redacted? like late Argento, it's sad to see), the first third with milfy Dickinson without dialogue is pure De Palma kino. Gets weaker after the elevator scene and character switch, dumb and obvious final twist, but still plenty of cool moments.

>>220656664
Haven't seen Hokum yet but while Oddity put me to sleep, I thought his first movie was pretty good.

Legitimately a perfect movie. Why is this so overlooked in Carpenter's filmography?
>>
>>220656685
>have you seen his post-2000 garbage like Redacted?
I haven't, but there's no way that Dressed to Kill is on the same level as Body Double, Carrie, Blow Out, Phantom of the Paradise, or Carlito's Way. Even his more mainstream stuff like Mission Impossible and Scarface mog it and I'd also put Sisters, Hi Mom!, Obsession, and Femme Fatale over it. Outside of the museum scene and Nancy Allen, the movie just does absolutely nothing for me even though it's well made. The twist is pretty obvious and he would perfect the voyeuristic style of filmmaking in his later movies.

It might be a highlight in other careers, but De Palma is actually one of the best directors of all time (truth nuke that not many people are willing to accept), so I would indeed consider it low tier during his golden years.

I heard it was a "murder mystery movie where a woman uses cursed objects to solve a mystery and get revenge" and was interested in that premise alone but man what a slog. The only item she remotely uses in the entire movie is the golem which does nothing until 20 seconds at the very end and fails at what it's supposed to do anyway. The only interesting part was when the masked guy first shows up in the vision because I thought it was either a ghost of some sort or otherwise going to be a much bigger deal than it was.
