I will use the animated film from a couple of years ago as an example. john is clearly the main character, and hal is used to prop him up (though in this case, they used him as parallax). the only reason john gets any attention at all is because he is black and an easy diversity checkbox in the justice league. the best green lantern stories focus on hal, but in this hal is old and jaded, which can work (see Gerard Jones' 90s run) but the focus is clearly on legacy and john inheriting the mantle. furthermore tom king sucks and lindelof is obsessed with black people (see season 2 of the leftovers and his watchmen adaptation for example). there is a lot of inference on my part, but it's not unfounded
