I would have liked to see a more coherent plan for what Homelander was trying to achieve and how he would do it.

'Non believers will die', ok well how? Homelander can only kill so many people himself, not exactly godlike to go flying around throwing each person into a wall separately. We know from the plane incident he would get fatigued doing this, and V1 doesn't seem to enhance his powers at all.

Right before the climax Butcher battle something crazy happens:
A genuine alien invasion straight out of Independence Day.
Homelander flies up and murks the ayylmaos, who were basically planning to do what he was, forcing the weaker population to worship them like gods.
After saving the whole goddamned planet, he realizes how petty his desires are.
Instead of returning to the whitehouse to fight Butcher, he frees Soldier Boy and asks for him to tell him what he should do next.

The show has been so bad for so long that you'd need a total rewrite but effectively he should have gone on an absolute berserk rampage at the beginning of season 4, have established complete control by season 5, and then be defeated in whatever manner is fitting. Instead Hannah Montana comes out, plays her hit single See You Again, and he suffers a complete mental breakdown.

You could have his powers become standardized and common among a team of 7 supes with the same powers as Homelander, as part of Vought's success at gifting supe powers. Other ending is that Homelander flies into space after taking the V1 and lasers something, then starts to descend before falling. Icarus who flew too close to the sun. The Boys are then able to take him out while Soldier Boy watches. Would be perfect payoff for the set up in season 1 when Homelander gives V to the terrorists and comments that it ended badly for a lot of them as they were adults. It's the only thing that has constantly been shown as a weakness and V1 is even more unstable.

I've been thinking about what I'd change given the limitations of the budget and not being able to go back further than the finale.
I'd have Butcher publicly flip right when Homelander says he'd get a shapeshifter to look like his wife. I'd have him visibly snap and start brutalizing HL with the crowbar and start ranting about how he's going to kill every supe on Earth, etc. Meanwhile HL is trying to get away, crawling and begging and having flashbacks to being tortured as a kid, all while Butcher is continuously mutilating him. All of this is being shown to the public on those giant screens everywhere. I'd have this go on so long the at home viewer would squirm in their seat and start saying "Jesus, just kill him." Hughie sees all this and realizes he has to stop Butcher, he tries to snap him out of it but Butcher threatens him and Starlight, and that's when Hughie kills him. Butcher falls beside HL and they both die at the same time. No one gets a happy ending, Hughie and the rest have to live as fugitives for the rest of their lives.
Part of this show was supposed to be about making people feel uncomfortable, and the audience it was targeted towards wanted this political stand in version of HL dead, so I'd just be giving them what they all wanted.
