>>220647357It's been a long while since I read it, so just know I'm missing out on a lot of the detail and nuance. Butcher never thought he'd actually survive his encounter with Homelander, but his follow-up plan was planning on killing the team from the very start. He basically admits that his plan was always self destructive. Remember, The Boys themselves in the comic took V from the very beginning so they'd die from the virus anyways.He tries to separate Hughie from the group, but Hughie relents and the team are trying to find where Butcher is. He's killed their Russian contact, and several side characters that assisted him. Butcher confronts MM, blows up a grenade in his face. Kimiko and Frenchie are killed when they realize their base is also packed with bombs, him telling her that he loved her below they explode.Hughie confronts Butcher at the top of the empire state building, Hughie revealing through his actions that he's still afraid of Butcher but is willing to fight anyway. They fall from a window during the fight, Butcher's neck is broken and they have an deep final confrontation basically talking about the nature of Butcher's desire for revenge and self destruction. Butcher then tells Hughie that he murdered his parents, and Hughie kills him with a glass shard through the chest. Butcher dies smiling, and Hughie calls his parents to reveal they're fine.Again, I've lost a lot of the nuance but I felt it worked really well. The Homelander/Black Noir stuff happens before all this, and it turned out it was Black Noir who raped Butcher's wife. A.huge subplot in the comic is how Homelander is being blackmailed with images of things that he doesn't remember doing - which pushes him over the edge and contributes to his moral decline

He's trying hard to get himself ready, but he just can't do it. Hughie's empathy and peaceful tendencies are eventually recognized by Butcher as something he likes about him.
