The show tries to demonstrate how "power corrupts" doesn't mean that power turns you into a super cool badass who needs to be restrained by morality, but that it's much more personal, needy, and desperate. The whole show, everyone has known that Homelander would be nothing without his powers, and the finale shows that: everyone close to him is working against him, nobody likes or believes in him without fear forcing them, and he's absolutely terrified when confronted with consequences.The Trump parallels are kind of obvious, but I really don't think they're the point at all. "Spoiled narcissist with inherited power tries to make everyone love them" isn't a new story, and the US presidency is a convenient stand-in for taking over the world.
