The heart to heart Homelander had with the Legend is above any scenes Hughie or Butcher get. The payoff to all this emotional investment? Jackshit. It simply would have been better writing to leave Homelander alive and suffer without his powers, rotting in some prison. The writers were so detached because they truly believed Homelander couldn’t be empathized with, yet told the story of a paranoiac who got taken advantage of over and over again.

Season 1 wasn’t some masterpiece but it was watchable because the gratuitous violence and peepeepoopoo stuff flowed naturally from the context of the show, the characters, and their motivations in a humorous way. It was slop but it was watchable slop that respected the audience enough to put forth the minimum effort to get you to suspend disbelief. By S5 it was a rambling incoherent mess of jumbled scenes and nonsensical characters.

It wouldn't have been so bad if they just did more. This is THE fight of all fights in the show. It should have lasted about 3-4 more minutes at least. It's just over so quickly you barely even get to take in Homelander at his weakest and knocking death's door. It's like they wanted to breeze past this big moment for no reason. Did Frenchie's eulogy and all the talk about assholes need to drag on that long?
