What were the last 5 FILMS you've watched?
>>220782641>you need colder onesI disagree. Good colour grading always uses one warm and one cold colour for light and shadow (or vice versa). Just going with cold colours makes things seem flat - one of the big trappings of the traditional approach to night scenes (i.e. filming at day, turning down brightness and then overlaying a purely blue tint).
>>220782674I think we've reached a point where Ang Lee is an underrated filmmaker despite being universally revered in the 2000s.Incredibly versatile. Unsimulated penetration. Maybe a bit too focused on gimmicky tech.
>>220782722>I disagree.Well, too bad then.>Just going with cold colours makes things seem flat It's not like those covers don't look flat.
>>220782988>It's not like those covers don't look flat.As far as paintings go, they don't. Though that has more to do with perspective than with contrast.

>>220783317It is though. It has far less depth than the others: No focal point for the perspective. It does have sharper colour contrasts than the others - maybe you're confusing those two, because contrasts of colour often come with a contrast of depth?

>>220784122Not /film/ and not really dealing with the issue either. Him losing his hands was mostly to "rhyme" with his son losing his hand in episode 5 and possibly to foreshadow Vader's mechanical parts. It didn't mean much for the character.

>>220782656>BonuserI don't know but probably something written by Bruce, maybe Running Faggot, or The Bass Player, or that one with the girl from Cube. The really short one guy directly addressing the camera bits almost all make me laugh also, like the one where Dave Foley is a guy who's comfortable with female menstruation. after a mildly dissapointing Dreams yesterday, i continue the "Ichiban! Japan Summer Screening" with Tokyo Story and boy what a delight. Packed with emotions and characters in a post-war japan. the new generation treats their parents as a nuisance, something of the past, very much i believe an apt analogy for japans changing ways after the bombs and loss in the big war. most of you nerds have probably seen it already, so there is really no reason to bring it up, but i have no other way of sharing this. it might be the heat messing with my head, but i feel a weird high when enjoying something so much like i do this film. they don't make 'em like this anymore and never will again.

>>220794247Anon, ganz ehrlich: Jeder echte Filmfan spricht fließend deutsch.
Translation: Anon, quite frankly: Every true film fan speaks fluent German. How else could one understand the history of European cinema, or rather, the development of the entire Western film tradition? Sure, there are translations and subtitles, and that makes it much easier (for non-German speakers) to get started. But over time, you simply have to develop a feel for the language. The same, of course, applies to French as well. You can't really appreciate French classics without a good understanding of the language.

The real issue is less dogmatism per se than the combination of a kind of dogmatism with the pretense of engaging in "ruthless criticism of all that exists" which I think amounts to what Charles Peirce called sham reasoning (roughly trying to fit evidence to pre-existing beliefs instead of vice versa).

>>220802894>This year's competition awards were dominated by auteur films that appropriately incorporated social themes. The jury was chaired by director Park Chan-wook, and included Ruth Negga, Demi Moore, director Chloé Zhao, Stellan Skarsgård, Isaach de Bankolé, director Laura Wandell, director Diego Cespedes, and Paul Laverty. Cristian Mungiu's "Fjord," which won his second Palme d'Or, may not be considered a standout work in his filmography, but it is a film that reveals his underlying artistic style, depicting the contradictions inherent in a devout family and a progressive system, and refusing to confine them to a simple dichotomy. The three Japanese films in this year's competition section (Hirokazu Kore-eda's "Sheep in a Box," Ryusuke Hamaguchi's "Suddenly Feeling Unwell," and Koji Fukada's "Nagi Diary") all focus on the goodness of humanity, and can be said to be the opposite of films that conceal the dark side of contemporary Japan.>Emmanuelle Maar's "Notre Salut."jpg On the other hand, in Andrey Zvyagintsev's "Minotaure," the current reality of war functions only as an accessory to a revenge drama about adultery. The precise and dynamic imagery greatly contributes to this deception, and it was impossible not to be reminded of the "traveling capo" in Jacques Rivette's text "On Despicableness." However, in terms of representation of war, Emmanuelle Maar's "Notre Salut," which won the Best Screenplay award, was a fine film that delicately depicted how ordinary people living in wartime lose hope amidst the chaos, and the relationship between the individual and society as a whole.
>>220802908>For Lukas Dhont's "Coward," in which the two lead actors (Emmanuelle Macchia and Valentin Campagne) won the Best Actor award, the wartime setting merely functions as a tool to intensify the generation of emotions and desires born in that extreme state. In the face of this film, even László Nemez's "Moullan," a biography of the French Resistance hero Jean Moulin, seems honest. And for Pawel Pawlikowski, sharing the Best Director award with Javier Calvo and Armbres' "La Bola Negra" must be nothing short of an insult, much like how Jean-Luc Godard's "Goodbye to Language" shared the award with Xavier Dolan's awful "Mammy" ten years ago. While the former is a mediocre work that merely extends the television series in terms of lighting, camerawork, actor direction, and overall production, Pawlikowski, through his unique aesthetic and serene black-and-white imagery, explores Thomas Mann's "The Fatherland" and traverses two torn Europes. It is by no means a film full of surprises, but like Mungiu, it is a prize-winning film that demonstrates a strong sense of authorship.>Bareska Gliesebach's "Das geträumte Abenteuer," which won the Jury Prize, is the most radical film in this year's competition. In a small town on the Bulgarian border, archaeologist Veska is drawn into the town's darkness after encountering an old friend. The film deliberately avoids dramatizing emotions and events, instead drawing the viewer in as she confronts her difficulties. In contrast to the strange tendency in French films (Jeanne Élie's "Garance" and Charline Bourgeois-Take's "La Vie d'une femme") to easily incorporate the shift in sexual orientation into the narrative, we must not forget Ira Sachs' "The Man I Love," which purely depicts living as a sexual minority and loving someone.
>>220802925>James Gray's "Paper Tiger".jpg Another American film, James Gray's "Paper Tiger," was an excellent return to his roots, reminiscent of his early works. The Directors' Fortnight section opened with Cantemir Baragov's "Butterfly Jam." This third feature film, set in America and starring Barry Keoghan and Riley Keough, centers on a boy from the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic, the director's own homeland. However, it is far from mature, seemingly lost control due to its massive production scale. The closing film was Quentin Dupieux's "Le Vertige," a 3D animation captured from live-action footage, whose "Full Phil" was also screened in the official Midnight section. Although he is an unusually prolific director who crosses genres, his so-called frenzied humor and methods do not go beyond the realm of the absurd, making it clear that he is not a "filmmaker" like Fassbinder. While exceptional selections included Lisandro Alonso's *Double Freedom*, a sequel to his debut feature film *Libertad* (2001) and marking the beginning of a new cinematic exploration, and Alain Cavalier's *Merci d'être venu*, which the director himself announced would be his final work, these choices were natural for Directors' Fortnight, which originated from the defense of filmmakers, and lacked originality.>Regarding works by female directors, while the Critics' Week section saw the discovery of Marine Atlan's debut feature film *La Gradiva* (which won the Grand Prix in that section), a grand romantic epic, and Zu Jing's *A Girl Unknown*, a meticulously directed exploration of a girl's identity, the Directors' Fortnight seemed to function only to maintain political balance, with a noticeable number of mediocre films across various "genres." Four years have passed since Julien Régy took over as artistic director, yet there have been no major discoveries, and it seems the program has yet to find its own identity.

>>220802948>Regardless of whether it's in the official competition section or not, the Cannes International Film Festival has an unusually large number of French-produced or French co-productions selected, but this is nothing new. >As is evident from the casting of French actors, the same faces dominate even within the competition, such as Léa Seydoux, Virginie Efira, and Gilles Lellouche, demonstrating how the French film production system, which relies on grants, functions, and even revealing certain limitations.>The lineup is almost entirely devoid of names of filmmakers who have shaped film history, such as Jean-Luc Godard (The Century of Love), Manoel de Oliveira (Going Home), and Jacques Rivette (Love's Heart). Perhaps the tendency of "film," often referred to as "culture" rather than "art" and "content" rather than "works," to be so strongly aligned with this year's lineup, given its focus on commercialism and market demands, is a factor. >the European bias remains unchanged. The key question will be whether this year's program was able to discover talent that deviates from the "new talent" created within the system.
