Do you like movies? Really?
any of these critics good? should I stalk them?

>>220808315Most of those are subcategories of film or movie. Which leaves "joint" (which is just a derogatory term for "movies"). The "photoplay" category is a different approach altogether, and while it does have value, it's not really something I actively seek out.

Shanghai Expressit's incredible how this is 6 years older and still mogs the shit out of The Lady Vanishes ('38). I do admire Hitchcock's work but that train joint is nothing more than british propaganda to psyop the masses into being okay with attacking germany in the near future, with a sprinkle of his signature marks of course... Whereas in the Shanghai Express, Von Sternberg is preoccupied with the perennial themes of love, faith and sacrifice. The atmosphere is incredible (thanks mainly to the b&w cinematography, framing and the montage with slow fades). Dietrich is magnetic. Strong 8/10. I know most here must've watched it already, but if you haven't: consider giving it a try.

This is literally just the feminist version of that gay monk film from Tropic Thunder
>>220812340Well, what are you opinions on Shanghai Express ('32)?

Since someone brought up Japanese films, I might as well ask:Does anyone have a rip of Shinonomerou Onna no Ran (1994) by Ikuo Sekimoto? That guy is mostly known for his contemporary sukeban and yakuza films, and while still vaguely thematically linked, what intrigues me about this film is its Meiji-era setting. Either way, it's proven pretty much impossible to find, surprisingly for something distributed by Toei.

>>220823923>Meiji-era settingTechnical question: Do you guys consider Meiji era films "jidaigeki"?I've mainly come across three types of opinions regarding this:A) They are jidaigeki.B) They are not ever jidaigeki.C) They are jidaigeki if and only if they deal with the downfall of samurai culture.I find C way too restrictive, but maybe it's better than being uncompromisingly A or B?
>>220825191Thanks again. Really nice picture quality too.Gonna watch it tonight.
>>220825192B going by the common definition.
>>220825274Yeah, but I do feel that the common definition is a bit warped by its own historical context. When the term was coined in the 1920s, the Meiji era was still very present in people's minds, with it ending basically a decade prior. Even in the golden era of jidaigeki in the 1950s, it would have been considered rather recent. Of course it wouldn't have made sense to call the setting historical back then - that would be like us calling something taking place around Y2K historical. But from a current day perspective, the Meiji era does feel like distant history, especially with so much going on in terms of political and sociopolitical changes.

Films that look like this other than Perceval le Gallois, Silvestre and Lancelot du lac.
>>220826098Films that look like Kate Bush?
>>220826255Yes.
>>220826366Seriously though: What exactly are you asking for? The three films you gave have very different aesthetics:Percival is theatrical, Brechtian even, with very reduced, almost formalist, sets and backgrounds.Silvestre is all about light and saturated colour setting the mood. Expressionist mindset.Lancelot is rather boring, frankly, in its visual language. Or at the very least very "by the books". Lots of greys and browns. If I had to go by the first two alone, and the vaguely medieval setting/costumes, I'd wager that you'd probably like the Fantaghiro series of films, as well as Lamberto Bava's other fantasy projects. Maybe?

>A single shutter, rotating in front of the lens at a point where all three images crossed, assured simultaneous exposure. The film ran vertically as in a conventional camera, but each frame was six perforations high, instead of four. The additional two perforations, plus the now usable soundtrack area meant that each frame had twice the standard Academy area. The total available image area was 3.24 square inches, six times that of Academy, nearly twice that of 65mm. The aspect ratio was 2.66 to 1.
