Dammit.

The Haunting was also that year but that was a weird weird film and why you don't do "blockbuster" horror that isn't also an action film.

I watched John Carpenter's Vampires last night, one of the few Carpenter movies I had never seen. It wasn't really good, but it wasn't bad, either. It was fine. Some nice gore and kind of a fun idea for killing vampires (impaling them and using a winch to drag them out into the sunlight). Laura Palmer gets naked. James Woods' character has mega heavy duty plot armor. Ending fell flat and felt rushed, like Carpenter suddenly realized "shit, I gotta wrap this thing up". All in all not as bad as I had heard.

John Carpenter hates it when movies deliberately try to have a message because to him movies are purely meant to entertain and make you feel not think so movies like The Substance or Close Encounters of the Third Kind or Robert Altman movies are pretentious to him. Which is exactly how most of /tv/ thinks too so it wouldn't surprise me if he's a regular poster here when he's taking a break from his video games. He's basically /tv/ personified just a grumpy old contrarian who hates everything like Hayao Miyazaki and Alan Moore: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FM6IG88qe7E

He's right, though. Art should be made for its own sake first and foremost. "Um actually the Thing is about the AIDS epidemic" or "the cold war" or whatever is retarded. What makes a movie's themes work is that they stand on their own and do not need to be compared to anything outside of the film in order to be understood.
>>
>>220954979
Carpenter is based for letting it out though, it's hard to believe someone is a real artist if they're always giving some PR response to questions like these.

Here's a little game for you, Chris.
Could the last movie you watched be set in the Resident Evil universe?

>Spielberg's Jaws
Yes, it could. A giant shark could be a bio-weapon developed by Umbrella.

>The Shining
No. Too many supernatural and psychological elements that don't fit in that universe.

>1995, Species
Yes, but with only a slight alteration to the script. Just replace the alien DNA with Las Plaguas.

>The Exorcist
No. The religious elements don't fit.

>Cronenberg's The Fly
Definitely.

>Pet Sematary
>Night of the Living Dead
No. The zombies are supernatural.

>Return of the Living Dead
Ironically, yes. Despite making a slight reference to Night of the Living Dead. The source of contamination is a corpse contaminated by a toxic gas.
>>
>>220956250
>Hokum
sure why not
>Iron Lung
no
>The Fly
as you mentioned, yes
>>
Ok Cult was pure kino fun which needs a sequel
Still the exorcism/ritual stuff looked quite fake, nothing I've seen so far has compared to the scene in The Wailing

If you count 4+ as Resident Evil, then any supernatural movie fits too. 7 and 8 are basically anything goes as far as monster design with just the slightest attempt at an explanation
>>
>>220956250
>Fresh
Yes. Just a cannibal serial killer, pretty mundane stuff.

>The Messengers (2007)
No. Supernatural plot.

>Night of the Living Dead
>No. The zombies are supernatural.
In the film scientists theorize the zombiefication is caused by radiation from a space probe that exploded upon returning from surveying Venus so while not exactly a virus it's still based on science.
>>
>>220945132
The Peter Pan one is decent, however it's unironically too bleak and depressing and also it feels quite low budget compared to Pooh 2 which is strange given it's the same company, it could definitely have used some creepy ruined theme park setting like the cover implies

>>220955069

Except it's not retarded because horror movies reflect the times whether it wants to or not

It was one of the reasons, although there were more than, that there was a resurgence of vampire movies in the 80s. 'm just going to ask google to explain
>The 1980s club lifestyle mirrored the "night owl" nature of vampires, but this overlapped with the rise of the AIDS epidemic. Films like Fright Night (1985) and Near Dark (1987) cleverly used the creature’s bite, transmission of blood, and themes of hidden nocturnal communities as metaphors for the societal fears of the era

Yep and after rewatching Halloween I also realized that Michael basically acts like a rapist.

His heavy breathing while he stares and stalks the girls is completely absent from the sequels and there are plenty of times when he has ample opportunity to kill some of them when they're completely alone during the evening and isolated from other people but doesn't because of his voyeuristic tendencies and when he finally kills Laurie's friends they're half-naked and he strangles them so they can make similar noises they would make during sex. He kills his naked sister as a young boy after she just got done having pre-marital sex with her BF too inside their house. Even Annie who didn't get to have sex still had a BF she was fucking regularly and only Laurie who's obviously a prude virgin and doesn't yet have a BF gets to live through the movie. The only male victim in the entire movie is Lynda's boyfriend who's fully clothed and doesn't get strangled.

There's a lot of sexual subtext to the film honestly to the point where it has to be completely intentional from Carpenter's part despite what he says. IIRC even the novelization describes Michael popping a boner from spying on the girls as they're changing clothes or having sex.
>>
>>220957928

>>
>>220957985
this is not to disagree with most of what you've said - just that imo the whole point of michael is that he's not sexual. he has alien murder urges that we the audience don't understand. his refusal to speak or do any of the therapy is why Loomis calls him pure evil. "pure" and untainted by sexuality.
sexuality would make him human, relatable, understandable. the recent remakes understood this when nu-loomis cries out for Michael to speak, to explain himself, but he doesn't.
I agree with what you're saying though, he acts like a perverted stalker, particularly the watching people from afar. but his desire if any is to rape with a knife.

Though, Italian sludge zombies are kino as well. I'd pick either over "the infected".

Cope. It has literally become a meme how Jordan Peele depicts white people like spooky characters with hidden agendas; "From the twisted mind of Jordan Peele", etc.
>>
>>220960936
I had watched loads of horror by the time I was 20, starting as a kid
What excuses do literal zoomers even have, nowadays you can just download or stream literally anything starting from any decade as opposed to being tied to whatever was on your vhs rental or airing on tv
>>
>>220961015
He was busy making his own horror franchise and becoming rich and famous instead of bragging to anonymous strangers about how much TV he's watched.
>>
>>220960936
I think it's a bit of a meme to be honest since I've got a nephew who's 18 and he will still go with his friends to see whatever movie is really popular at the cinema like Project Hail Mary, Obsession, etc. A lot of YouTube and Tiktok shit still use mainstream movies as inspiration.

The only reason he was "allowed" to direct Backrooms was purely as a marketing ploy. Just compare the end-credits for Obsession and Backrooms and you will see how he was supported by a Hollywood level crew of over 350 people. Obsession is way more impressive in what it was able to achieve with a crew one tenth (or less) of the size.

So that's your answer? You're coping? That's sad and embarassing.

Yeah his image is really a product of the media. I think it probably privately drives him insane the fact people see him as the negro saviour, but he's half black and his dad stereo-typically wasn't in his life. Also a white wife kek.

Whether it is Peele's intention is debatable, but the media and discourse around his films is related to the challenges and oppression that black people (actually black Americans exclusively but nobody in popular discourse has any interest in nuance) face.
Us is interpreted as being about the performative culture of the 'black' identity or some other gay liberal po-mo horseshit. I have confidence that a bunch of articles from 'respectable' publications have talked about how Nope is a commentary on white exploitation (black guy is equated to the chimp, performing for masters which is why the symbolism of the chimp sparing him matters; first inclination is to monetize alien shit; etc...).

From the way Peele conducts himself in interviews I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that he agrees with these interpretations to some extent, albeit probably not to as ridiculous a degree as others have claimed. His other films are more ambiguous but I think you're straight up in denial if you don't think that Get Out isn't a hit piece against whites and especially the whites that claim to like/respect/support blacks. You can argue the validity of the claim or not but I don't think you can in good faith claim that it isn't a movie with an anti-white agenda.

>>

that's what's funny about it though. Peele could film a potato being cut in half and people would say it's a bold statement about race relations in america. even get out seemed like a film about obsessive libs and most of them ironically did not pick up on in their gushing reviews.
get out is a film where white people are evil villains and victimizing black people so I don't disagree since it fundamentally is.

I can largely agree with what you are saying.
I do think that Peele intentionally makes his films about race relations and I think he does it because (1) it is what he knows and is familiar with from Key and Peele and (2) because he believes that he is a smart filmmaker for including it. I'm not positive how much of the stuff his movies say he actually believes but I do think that race and race relations are the most significant parts of his work to critics and as a result the most significant parts of his work to him.
