Asked this at the end of the last thread, reposting to fish for more opinions:

What's worth watching from this series as a newfag? I watched a little bit of Tenant Doctor Who as a kid, this shitposting has sparked my interest. The Reddit/Tumblr fanbase in the 2010s dissuaded me before.

Any runs with genuine good writing and substance? Or was it mostly slop in the first place?
>>
>>221080126
Watch key serials from the classic series and realize that nuwho was always soap opera slop made for women.
>>
In the Forest of the Night

i've been doing this on and off (mostly off) for six years

This fucking sucked. No big surprises there. I had forgotten nearly everything about this episode from my first time watching it when it released, and I experienced a feeling of something I can only describe as nostalgic dread about halfway through.

At first glance, you would expect this to be a light-hearted, kid-friendly episode that has a decent message about the environment, about parents listening to their kids, etc., until the point where the little girl's mental health issues are actually revealed to be communications from the Earth itself and not as a result of her missing sister who LITERALLY appears out of a fucking bush when all the new trees magically disappear at the very end of the episode.

Beyond just being arguably irresponsible, it's completely, absolutely, totally downright retarded and lazy.

the whole ending with magic and wishes and whatnot felt like the kind of fairy tale stuff you'd find in the smith era, and i understand why people say that series 8 is tonally inconsistent with itself
still less gay than anything from RTD.
>>
>>221080126
watching some fan-favorites from the classics like this anon said >>221080142 is worth it if you have the attention span for that sort of thing.
series 1 through series 4 is generally recommended for people wanting to get into the show, and everything after that is also considered quality (for the most part).

it's good TV, and there are lots of great ideas that are executed relatively well in most of the productions. start from series 1 with christopher eccleston and go from there. most people would probably tell you that as well.
>>
>>221080244
i think that even if this was a smith episode it would've been just as bad. started out pretty strong (and genuinely funny), but this reminds me of a weaker version of "fear her" from series 2. i'd rather watch that again than this. this was just half-assed. i don't even think my kids would like it.

Dark Water/Death in Heaven

i remember liking this when i was 16

Most disappointing finale I've seen in this six year long "binge" of the show. It's kind of fucked up now of course since it's now been just as long since I've last watched everything now as it was when I started doing this; I'm only bringing this up because watching this finale made me think about what it is about the show I really like, and what it is I really hate. This finale had both of those things, and more of one than the other.

This episode just felt toothless and cheap, and I'm not just talking about the special effects. Clara and the Doctor's relationship being strained by the death of Danny Pink should have been the emotional core of the story rather than the bookend to the series. The decision they made wasn't necessarily a bad one, but I can't be alone in thinking that dead people should fucking stay dead in order for us to give a shit about them. I think Danny Pink was a cool character who was played well, and now the last thing I'll remember of him is being a ghost that resurrected a dead Afghani kid. Bravo Steven?
Cybermen are a really cool villain, and I think everyone can agree with that. I think they're definitely the kind of monsters writers are either really ambitious about, or kind of ambivalent about. I don't consider this a Cyberman story, but a Master story with one of the cheapest buildups ever.
Michelle Gomez was great and she made this finale worth the watch. I'm excited for what's to come with her if I decide to continue.

After finishing this, though, I think I'm done. I know Heaven Sent is down the line, and I know it gets better (and worse), but this finale seriously made me reconsider what it is about this show that I really love. It wasn't even that bad, it was just full of missed opportunities and disappointments. It's got me feeling down; not because of what happened in it, but because of what I know comes after.

Tier list coming up.
>>
>>221082369

Series 8 Tier List

S - Deep Breath, Listen

A - Into the Dalek, Flatline

B - Robot of Sherwood, The Caretaker, Dark Water

C - Kill the Moon, Mummy on the Orient Express

D - Time Heist, Death in Heaven

downright retarded and lazy - In the Forest of the Night

-

Thank you for many years of on/off laughter and banter. I hope we have something new to talk about concerning the show someday. Until next time.

Mel is a computer programmer from the 20th century who is a companion of the Sixth and Seventh Doctors, first appearing on-screen when the Sixth Doctor showed an adventure with her to the Time Lords in order to prove that he would become a better person in the future. Following this, she is shown accompanying the Doctor as a companion, with no further explanation given as to how she met the Doctor.

>The ending to the last episode was such a shark jump that it’s practically impossible to write a satisfactory explanation for it.

Two options that would work fine:

>1) Billie Piper is the Doctor
Sure Russian bots and chuds won't like that, but they never watched the show anyway and probably wouldn't even if they had Nigel Farage suddenly playing the Doctor, so pointless to pander to them anyway. People like The Fugitive Doctor so its not as if a female Doctor won't work if written well (ironic considering everything else during Chib's run, apart from The Flux serial, was mid at best).

>2) Its the remainder of the Bad Wolf energy that the Doctor sucked out of Rose manifesting during the regeneration.
Gatwa's Doctor was using up all his energy reserves and any bad wolf stuff left would be a part of that, so why not? There's an explanation for her popping up, so you can move straight on to another actor being the Doctor if needs be.

The show's awful S11-S15 state and embarrassing ending have completely completely vindicated Moffat's initial urge to lay the revival's story to rest at Capaldi. The Doctor Falls would've been a melancholic end but also a dignified one, with people agreeing the story ended on a high note with gravitas and authenticity.

Ending Doctor Who in such a fatalistic and gloomy way would obviously be ill-suited for the show's overall spirit and its nature of continuing indefinitely, so ideally WEAT/TDF should've ended ambiguously with the Doctor lying there on the battlefield as his hands begin to glow, then fade to black.

Instead of that ending Moffat had to force that awkward interlude called TUAT, and after that we got this zombified shit form of Chibwho and R2DWho. This new show cheerily adhered to this THE SHOW MUST NEVER END mantra but it was just spinning in place, like a lobotomized person neurotically going through the same old habits because they made sense once upon a time. Whenever it tried to come up with anything new it resulted in messily spraying shit at every bystander and viewer, because the meaning and authenticity were left behind.

And now it died a deeply embarrassing death that was somehow both premature and long overdue. Rest in piss and fuck you Russell.

there’s a chance the show won’t come back at all, since its up for tender and the disney thing went so awry that i think a lot of companies might be turned off about it. i am hoping it’ll return someday, bcs its weird accepting the fact that this show that has been a constant in my life and has always been there through the good and the bad could be gone now, and i’d much rather have bad/mediocre doctor who than none at all.

David Tennant and Matt Smith were too different degrees of the type of men chicks fawn over. 10 was that he's so damaged but in that kinda acceptable I can iron out the kinks kinda way and he'll love me forever. 11 was as another anon put it "Manic pixie dream boyfriend". 12 came along and hit too close to home with acting like their dad who's having a clear mid life crisis instead of their boyfriend.
It's why guys have a much easier time adjusting to Capaldi.

At least there, they had the (paperthin) excuse of "It's a kids' show." RTD2's Who is way too sexually charged for that.

Unironically, casting an older gray haired man was more controversial than a woman or a black

It's kind of cringe how they tried to soften "cool up" his character after he initially got a bad response.
I wouldn't have minded so much if the punk rocker stuff was there from series 8. But it feels really awkward how they suddenly just cram it all in.
It's part of why Capaldi's Doctor feels so all over the place as a character. It's not "development". It's a lack of a unifying vision.
