Kino performance, it's clever how the film uses inner monologues to counterbalance her cheerfulness to show how she's trying not to crack. But the way she portrays it is something you don't see in modern films.

I guess I'll ask here;

I'm looking for this movie where there's this hardcore tripping scene where its a man covered in red with his face melting/liquifying upward. The image of that peculiar scene used to be post often to depict extreme existential crisis like a screaming wojak or something. Surely someone knows what im talking about

Possibly Horror Rises From The Tomb? They did some kind of coalescing effect for the revival then ran it backwards at the end when they destroyed him so the blood and grue were flying upwards. If not that one, a similar eurohorror.

>What does the Harper poster think about Shock Treatment?
I'm a big fan of it and was absolutely obsessed back in 2024. It's catchy, underrated, has a better soundtrack than Rocky, and Jess is at her utmost peak lookswise (same with Suspiria). Her husky singing voice is simply breathtaking and sounds even better than it did in Phantom of the Paradise. Have you seen that one yet?
>In some ways I like it more than Rocky Horror but that might just be my contrarian bone.
Same. It helps that Shocky isn't overtly gay like Rocky, even though Tim Curry's lack of presence can be felt. It was actually supposed to be filmed on-location in Denton, TX but the 1980 SAG strikes prevented that. Moving to a soundstage ultimately worked in the film's favor though imo.

if the roles were reversed somehow it would be the guys fault for leading her on or ignoring her
people would say that the guy sent mixed signals and the girl was just very confused.

remember that WONDER WOMAN 1984 literally had the same situation where wonder woman wishes to have her dead boyfriend back,
and the wishing rock puts his soul on a random guy.

so we already have a reversed obsession situation with wonder woman 1984

I just finished Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs - It's not horror, but it's directed by Mario Bava and stars Vincent Price so kind of amazing that it's not.
Seems like a film that Bava just got done, doesn't have much of his usual flair. Price was kino as always. I didn't understand it was a sequel to a previous Price film so guess I'll check that out.

For sure. One thing that's been noticed is all these young hip new directors only do horror and nothing else. No offense to horror obviously, but it's really easy to make indie horror and even easier when the plot is entirely secondary to how everything looks (which was perfect for Backrooms). The fact that he only co-wrote the movie and will be co-writing again next time just shows how bad he is at writing.

Kane really isn't one of those people. There's no denying he's talented in visual effects and set design, but his writing abilities and plot ideas have always been either bad or just mediocre at best. Well I ended up watching the first Dr. Goldfoot film for Vincent Price completionism. It actually sucked compared to the second one, not enough girls or Price. Though interestingly it had the same set designer as Pit and the Pendulum, so they basically get Price to do that routine again.
Vidrel at the end made me laugh though.
>>
>>221123652
Best Vincent Price film in your opinion? I think I like The Abominable Dr. Phibes best, but I haven't watched all of his films. I'm missing for example the 1960s version of "I Am Legend" (The Last Man on Earth or something?).
>>
>>221124267
I haven't finished them all yet, still have some to go but they're the lesser known ones.
I think The Last Man on Earth is maybe the one film that isn't held up largely by him like a lot of his others, it's a more well rounded film. But my favourites are The Masque of Red Death / The Haunted Palace because they're comfy.
Hist most underrated imo is Confessions of an Opium Eater.
>>
>>221124340
>The Haunted Palace
Wasn't that a low budget Roger Corman production very loosely based on H.P. Lovecraft? It's been sooo long that I've seen it as a kid. Might rewatch it and also give the other two you mentioned a chance.
>>
>>221124404
Yeah, it's actually the first adaption of Lovecraft to film and maybe tonally one of the most accurate. Even though because the Poe adaptions were popular they titled it after one of his poems.
It's on par with the other Poe adaptions, I just have a soft spot for it.
>>
>>221124484
>it's actually the first adaption of Lovecraft to film
I'm not so sure, there's an old 1960s movie called "Die, Monster, Die!" that is basically The Color Out Of Space and has Boris Karloff in it.

I've just looked it up, and Die Monster Die is from 1965, whereas The Haunted Palace is from 1963. So it depends on anybody's definition of "adaptation" versus "inspired by a story" who was first.

I'm downloading it and the Italian title (movie has Italian and English soundtrack) is: "La morte dall'occhio di cristallo" - the death from crystal eyes if my school Latin is anything to go by. The title of "The Haunted Palace" is "La città dei mostri" - the city of monsters. I also remember watching "The Dragonslayer" once, and its title was "Il drago del lago di fuoco" - the dragon from the lake of fire.

Who the hell comes up with local movie titles in Italy???

What is it that Obsession and Backrooms do that Big Hollywood has forgot about? Is it that people just want to watch fun and interesting movies instead of the 10th repetition of an IP that's been done to death before and that comes complete with a built-in political lecture that the audience has to be like 2026 Los Angeles, diversity and representation included?

If there's a lesson to producers in all of this, then it's obviously that a big budget does not guarantee a big success anymore, and that films made by a committee do not hold the appeal or the orignality an indie project may have. So why not put the 300 million you would spend on the next Marvel or Starwars or Disney project into 5 to 8 smaller and more creative projects instead?
>>
>>221128616

Yet I love it when it's not. I like horror, but I do not like gore, found footage shaky cam, jump scares or "we've got this big house we can shoot in, we don't need sets or permits". I need proper atmosphere and locations. I think the last horror movies I saw that "qualified" were "The Awakening" and "30 Days of Night".
>>
>>221128616
a lot of people just will not watch "scary" movies let alone when they feature creatures monsters killers violence ghosts etc but you give them a grounded low-concept human to human scenario they can relate to and gossip about tapping into the female audience and they'll throw money at it plus it's still entertaining as a horror for the fellas

I'm a bit disappointed. I watched two Vincent Price movies this afternoon "The Haunted Palace" and "The Masque of the Red Death". Sure, Vincent Price was excellent, but those were also Roger Corman movies that had scripts that were based on a poem and a short story by Edgar Allen Poe. There was material for maybe 15 or 20 minutes in each movie, like they could have been segments in a 3-, 4- or 5-part anthology movie. They had to be padded out to 90 minutes, and that kind of bored me. Don't get me wrong, they were a very comfy watch, but maybe for that to work you must have seen them as an impressionable child or youth? Anyway, I would have liked a full story instead of an idea for a quarter of an hour and then padding, padding, padding.

The girl in Masque of the Red Death was cute. Funny she was only third billed in spite of having much much more screen time than the second billed woman. Maybe because the actress was just younger.
>>
Maybe because Hazel Court got the nightmare sequence and was definitely the eye catcher at the time. But yeah, Jane Asher was cute in it.

Right, the sets were pretty great, I have to admit. Also they had lots of actors. Not just 3 people holed up in a remote house in the country like many of today's cheaper horror movies. I wonder how they managed that at the time. Did people and sets cost a lot less back in the early 60s? Maybe it was a different cinema culture. People went to the drive-in every week no matter what was showing, so there probably was a pretty steady stream of income.
>>
>>221129833
Yes, I figured that out. Thanks. :-)

The older studios had a much more streamlined approach to constructing movies, especially period and genre films. Westerns are another example where studios had tons of props, clothes, and even whole towns set up and ready to use whenever they made a new one.
If you watch older Shaw Brothers wuxia films, they're also incredible with that. They'd pump out hundreds and hundreds of them, and they'd all look fantastic with the sets and costumes and all the extras they need on stand-by. The studios would invest in the stuff they need to make the kind of movies they want to produce, and the directors could work very comfortably with what they had without additional spending, which kept budgets lower and cost less in the long-term, while still producing quality.

Now they just use CGI

Right. The big studios have been sold and sold again to financial investors. Just pick any movie from the last 30 years or so and the logo at the beginning will have "a soandso company" under it. It also seems the big studios sold their backlots, their costumes and their props and only work as distributors these days. You can still book a sound stage, but I've seen a report that hardly anybody does that anymore in today's Los Angeles. The infrastructure is crumbling, and filming is moving away from L.A. to where it costs a lot less. I've seen a report from 2025 where they said to film a simple sit-down interview in a house in Los Angeles, the city requires you to have a fire marshall present, a union representative, a representative of the Indian tribe the land once belonged to, and of course a permit. Costs all in all around 5000 dollars without paying your own crew and the people you interview. And that's for one hour of footage before editing.
And then there's states like Georgia, where you don't have the specialized people or the infrastructure of Hollywood, but who welcome you with open arms and you even don't have to pay the full taxes. Or you move production to Elstree and get a full qualified staff of English speakers and some of the biggest sound stages in the world for a lot less money.

I don't think the city council of L.A. has realized yet what they're driving away through taxes, fees and regulations right now.

Just finished. Four girls, three of them relatives, go to a vacation house catch the eye of the local psycho. I was in the mood for something harsh, and this is willing to go there (the opening scene is a teen boy being forced to rape his own mutilated mother while she gets shot in the head ), but outside of the gore and the transgression, it's too normal of a movie. It thinks it's saying something political that isn't interesting, and it thinks it's creating drama when it's playing by rote. A common quality i see among Latin extreme films is that they can be exceptionally brutal but are kinda dumb. Everyone in the cast is willing to go all the way which I appreciate (the scene right after the opening is a full frontal nude lesbian scene), but I wish they'd been doing it for a better movie.

I just watched "The Resurrected" (1991), and it's a pretty good Lovecraft horror movie. It doesn't feel like they took 20 minutes worth of material and padded it to a 105 minute runtime. Instead they took "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" and spun a detective story around it, set in present day Rhode Island (but filmed largely in Canada). You follow a private investigator around as he finds out bits and pieces of the puzzle, and the scenes feel connected by logic and motivation, not made up just so that the film runs for more than 90 minutes of runtime. The film had a decent budget and it's competently made, directed, shot and edited. The practical special effects and the atmosphere are also very good. The acting is very decent even though the only name I recognized was Chris Sarandon who plays a very convincing madman. And of course I knew the director Dan O'Bannon. The production company went bankrupt when the film was finished and so it was never released to cinemas, but was sold off and went directly to VHS. The movie gets shown on late night TV though from time to time.

7/10 from me.

Also Obsession stars a latina and an asian.

Except Scream 7 is the other horror film that made $200m this year, and it's a big budget giga-sequel.

I think Obsession is an anomaly, it's just a good film. The lesson from Backrooms is the same one from FNAF, Super Mario, Sonic and Iron Lung. IPs that zoomers consume on digital devices that are the new horizon.

the two women I watched obsession with said real Nikki actually likes Bear and pointed out signs on why this is the case - particularly her curiosity and repeated fishing for information during the bar and drive home scene, apparently girls wouldnt be that insistent if they did not like you.
all men I have talked to (including myself), thought she didn't care about him if you go by what was said by Ian and Sarah (the friendzoning and the casual sex).
what did (you) think?
>>
>>221134900
interesting but no. I mean the friendzoning was pretty explicit, only way around that was if the other girl was lying.
also more importantly, she'd been friends with him for years but nothing ever happened? nah it's cause there was no real interest from her.

Ian and Sarah were shown to have self-interested motives themselves, they were bears "friends", but ultimately had ulterior intentions. So if there was some sort of deceit I can see the plausibility of that kind of reading

Horror doesn't need a big budget, has a massive audience that will always check out anything new and there's been a glut in the market for new IPs that aren't just another sequel. There's also been nothing good in theaters for almost a year at this point, so that has really helped too.
