I have seen some recent horror in theaters. Obsession, Backrooms, and Undertone. you guys might remember me from my lengthy analyses back in Oct. ive been watching horror since but writing less. Heres my take on Obsession:

Obsession is about AI psychosis. Obviously its about autonomy, BPD, and fatasizing without thinking about reality. Yeah theres a discussion on what love means and what it means to be enamored and whether its moral to enamor, but i wanna focus on the AI metaphor going on. Theres lots of evidence there is ai in this world. Nikki generates ai images of their relationship, he asks chatgpt for the side effects of MDMA. but further theres more. (irl) There was a boy who had an AI be his girlfriend and he grew attached and became psychotic and the ai dumped him and he killed himself. a very tragic truth. Bears arc reflects this, he has a crush, confides in ai because his friends dont really help him with his struggle in any meaningful way. he sees an option in front of him and takes it without thinking. from then on, he is fully convinced that nikki is obsessed to an insane degree with him. When Bear confronts Nikki about her inappropriate behavior she is acts like its perfectly natural then she apologises and promised a change in behavior like an ai would. Then, the hansel and gretel monologue was delivered with an intensity and cadence similar to ai speech. and the creepy ways in which nikki moves in the night are reminiscent to the ways that ai video generation moves the human body, which reflects the ais inability to recognize embodiment. the thing controlling nikki doesnt know what its like to have a body.
>>
>>221135817
>contd.
(when she scuttles with the flowers, when she ducks back into the corner, when she straightens up after smiling all day) her body was silhouetted often to show the disconnect and lack of freedom nikki has it doesn't quite look like her, similar to the way people will sexually assault women by taking their photos and using ai to make them naked. ripping their autonomy and the resulting image represents an idea more than a reality. it assaults the woman and yet the image doesnt even resemble the person (ai yasaified faces, guessing the shape of bodyparts) okay, then the rug in the living room with its intricate orderly patterns, when taken as metaphor for technology, when nikki spoils herself on the rug it becomes this huge blight on technology. if she is ai, then her participation as technology soils it. the progress of technology is necessary though, bear kills himself and dies on the rug, an altar of technology. the irl boy killed himself in the name of ai. as we pan past his frothing mouth we see the orderly pattern again and a slow pan to an upside down television, a negation of technology, something that connects us instead dividing us. I have also analyzed it from the point of view of a traditional slasher in the lineage of TCM, and would be happy to write up my thoughts there for you guys :)

I'll be honest I only skimread your post but I agree. I actually upset a zoomy recently who said it was about wishes and rape by saying those analysis are really surface level and somewhat shaky.
I mean I've seen many monkey paw adaptions. Hell even the whole Wishmaster series. Very little of Obsession is about "getting too much of what you want" or a strange interpretation. Bear asks for love and he gets a broken freakish pseudo-human. He got scammed, the modern world is about buying something and getting scammed on a shoddy product that fucks up your life.
>>
Hi bros I recently watched Dark Skies. Know any other movies with this vibe? Name a bunch because there's a good chance I've seen them before, I was surprised I hadn't watched this one cuz its right up my alley
>>
>>221135907
>monkey paw adaptions
This touches on a discussion i had with my kino fren about this. i would argue its pretty obviously not a monkey paw situation, but more like a genie situation. Where the monkey paw will move the world in a way you dont want to give you the thing you think you want, a genie wish will grant the wish regardless of the state of the world, yet what it gives you is not actually what you think you wanted, or rather, what you want is not actually what is good for you. this goes more to the surface level analysis though, and i think the quote "romance and love stories are the same" is where this argument really lands. Neither Bear nor Nikki really elaborate on what they think either term means. but instead the awkward pause is broken by something thats all to easy to connect to the ai argument. "youre the only person i can talk to about this kind of stuff" meanwhile they arent actually talking to each other.

P.S. is hating the capcha oldfag or newfren? its summer indeed, but god damn i miss need tomboy.

before you could pin yourself into skinnyness age was the inevitable worry of any woman who was older than 19. the horror of X is that the wall spares no one. if tirzepitide was acessable in the 2010s, instead there would be tension about whether a glp skinny body was moral or authentic, but it would only really be an issue women think about. now the wall is not your enemy, but who you once were, the leaking of y our relevance as popular culture leaves you behind and you get attached to music from when you used to be beautiful. the fat blob hunting us down is now a metaphor for the dishonesty of using cheat codes to get thin and how no matter what out health will decline and theres no magic pill. think the Substance but as a slasher with a more grounded and less sci fi background. (my schizophrenia allows me to analyze metaphor in movies that dont even exist. )

Like Castro saying Jaws is really about capitalism, you can say any movie is actually a metaphor for the effect of technology on society this way, and you'd be right.
>Shawshank Redemption is a metaphor for the struggle for agency against dehumanizing bureaucratic surveillance technologies and standardized systems of control
>Titanic's ship represents the class divides entrenched by tech progress; its sinking represents the human cost of technological hubris
>Gladiator is a critique of mass entertainment and consumer culture as a means of political control
>The Angry Birds Movie is a metaphor for how the comforts afforded by a technological society render us naive, listless and complacent with regard to external threats
If a recently released movie reflects anxieties about AI, that's predominantly because movies in general tend to reflect the concerns of the times in which they are made, regardless of their creators' specific intents

genuinely have you seen the movie? its so on the nose with its point that its tacky.
you realize that the old hag is the same woman as the young pornstar, both the irl actress and the whole thematic thread right? the film is about the jealousy of youth, popularity, beauty, and sexuality that pearl feels watching maxine shoot a porno with a hot negro. thats why she goes on a fucking killing spree. okay, so what are the killer and her tactics metaphor for? its a slasher, so obviously theres something about the androgynously named final girl (max) and her relationship to the power structures of the world (pearl), the violence picks off machismo unceremoniously, it crushes the cuck, it eats both the sexually liberal and the newly sexually liberated. so, you have to strike a balance between being sexually liberal and conservative, you have to face the fact you will one day become undesirable. and to the women in the audience, men are still in control because thats who fucks you, who films you fucking, who directs you to fuck, and who profits off your sexual exploitation.

>>221138165
>movies in general tend to reflect the concerns of the times
yeah, i think we are on the same page here. part of what i like so much about horror as a genre is that it has to be scary so theres always something under the surface. the author might want to talk about one thing, but will end up accidentally discussing another. in TCM, tobe hooper wants you to think about the unethical slaughter of livestock, but he accidentally includes the dual idea that we reduce women to the level of livestock.

>Right..ozempic makes a lot of people looks worse though.
Yes and no, it depends on the persons starting weight and how much they abuse it honestly. Too much of a good thing as they say.
>>
what ozempic actually does is basically give you a medically induced eating disorder. you lose weight by just starving yourself but it makes it so you don't need willpower to do it, food just becomes gross to you. If you're anything other than like morbidly obese and get on it you are most likely going to be fucked up
>>
>>221138610
It's fine in the short term as it's temporary, but people just keep on using it to try and keep the weight off rather than realizing it reduces weight. I'd honestly considered it since I'm a bit of a fatty but I've heard about things like Ozempic tongue or it fucking with your hair or other things like that, so I don't want the risk.

>The fire which gutted the church south of Pertwella four days ago continues to offer up a gruesome bounty. County Sheriffs excavating the charred ruins estimate the body count is now up well past three hundred. County coroners say that the bodies were found stitched to each other, covering the basement's walls and ceiling. One on-the-scene witness called it "a human tapestry of torture and sadism," and a sight he will never forget.

>Some of the corpses they have found had false teeth made out of wood. That means some of the bodies they're finding down there are over two hundred years old. Absolutely. Although IMDb says they had bad luck with the weather when they shot in New England. It rained so much that they moved to a school gym hall to construct the sets and the rain came down on the hall's roof so hard that they had to dub the scenes afterwards. Also the forest scenes were shot on a Paramount sound stage in California and they drove truck loads of autumn leaves from New England to California to decorate the sound stage.

What I also didn't know was Hitchcock bought the rights to The Trouble With Harry and 4 other famous films of his (like Rear Window, Vertigo etc) to leave to his daughter, and for that reason these films didn't see a re-release until the mit 1980s.

It has interesting stuff going on but Scott's performance is HORRIBLE and it doesn't get put down nearly as often as it deserves to be. He is brought on as the old heavyweight name recognition guy and proceeds to completely mangle the Kinderman character. And no, it doesn't matter if the author himself is the director, because even if he perfectly achieved his vision, he must still answer for what he has allowed to be in the film. And in this case, it's a vastly inferior take on the Kinderman character relative to what Friedkin achieved with Lee J. Cobb. Scott spends the movie doing one of two things: either staring at a crime scene like an old sourpuss, having done none of the real work himself, or else having random "I'M ANGRY!" acting outbursts which are just silly coming from an old man, even a character in his circumstances. Next to this, Cobb in the original is quiet, sublime, intelligent, turns the screws. When Chris offers him another drink out of learned politeness, hoping to god he'll just go the fuck away already (most detectives would just leave now), he instead sweetly says, "Please." "FUCK", thinks Chris to herself.

Another nice shot on the back end is when a character is yanked away from a large pair of shears which very nearly cut her head off, that one looks good and is fun to slow-motion. Scott has his uses (Patton, Dr. Strangelove) but this is not one of them. And even if he wasn't "miscast" and is really what Blatty was going for, then that's on Blatty himself. Scott is horrible in this film and I am completely right.

Area 51. There were things that were really really good about this movie mainly just the tension of them sneaking around and the creativity of the stuff they came up with that would be inside Area 51. It's a bit rattly as it goes along but imo one of the stronger found footage films for what you say. The core concept is excellent and during the crossing the desert shit you really feel like it hits them. That idea that any crazed person goes through like holy shit we're actually doing this and could spend our lives in jail over it.
I wish these films would get remakes patching up the weak parts instead of the classics getting remade weaker.

Just finished. Isabel Sarli was an extremely hot woman whose husband made numerous sexploitation movies about during the 60s and 70s. This is only the second one I've seen, but both are about how she just HAS TO FUCK OTHER MEN, to the point of madness. In this one she's married to a rich guy who can't get it up, and she wants a baby so badly that she'll fuck literally anyone. She goes so far as to become employed at a whorehouse just so SOMEBODY will get her pregnant. Then one day she's cavorting nude under a waterfall and a dude in a rubber Halloween devil mask rapes her. Some people get murdered blah blah blah. She finds out her husband isn't impotent, he's just gay. Her primary love interest is played by the director's (her husband's) son. I love these fucked up feverish movies and I'm so happy there's of couple dozen more of them for me to get through, but this is the only one that's technically horror.
