its kino

Insane that they do "spin-offs" of overtly political SJW shit. Who is watching this crap? Redditors?

it's been head and shoulders above the last 2 and a half seasons of the main show, also
>9 months in a close capsule with a pajeeta

>>
>>221236054
The non-space stuff in this show is less "drama" than what you're thinking. It's more of an espionage thriller. One which could be compelling even if it took place somewhere else in the broader Cold War and wasn't connected to the alt history space race premise
>>
>>221236622
>space race, but they'd better leave the politics out of it!
Are you retarded?
>>
>>221236622
Its on AppleTV so mix between cucks and nobody
>>
>>221235943
They fucked up by not having a Russian dub. It feels super weird to me how in every shot of text on a screen or on a document etc, it's in Cyrillic- yet everyone is speaking British English at the same time. They couldn't even do us the courtesy of starting the show in Russian and fading/transitioning it into English, like how Valkyrie or Way of Water did it
>>
>>221237321
I like For All Mankind but it turns into a retarded political soapbox sometimes. There's more than one instance of an old biggoted guy saying "there's too many people like me". Doesn't even make sense.
>>
>>221237422
wow likes it's about the political rivalry between soviets and America you fuck cunt retard
>>
>>221237478
That has nothing to do with the writers poorly inserting their modern identity politics beliefs even when it makes no sense. Going to the moon was about capitalism versus communism, not women and gays, and even if it was it's just shitty writing.

yeah it was just dumb and woke when the soviets sent a woman to the moon to prevent america from claiming that as a first. that sort of thing would never happen in real life. i hate how this woke show just invents woke things that are totally made up and not based on anything

>>221237321
being brown/female isn't political
>>
>>221237691
And as I said
>even if it was it's just shitty writing
You can't defend characters speaking out of character to become a soapbox so you have to bring all of these irrelevant things into it. Bad writing is bad writing, apparently you think it's fine if it's motivated by politics and the show has a vague excuse to be about politics.

>the show has a vague excuse to be about politics
would you consider picrel to have a vague excuse to be about politics? im just curious
>>
>>221237760
It's a vague excuse because it's handwaving away ANYTHING to do with politics as justified, not because the show has no excuse to be about politics. The show has an excuse to be about space travel too, but if they did something retarded like fly to the moon on a hang glider, you couldn't just say "IT'S ABOUT SPACE TRAVEL!"
>>
>>221237760
The difference is The West Wing doesn't have characters the writers disagree with say "my political beliefs are bad, I sure can't wait for everyone like me to die"

>>221237857
Care to give any specific examples of someone in For All Mankind doing that?
The homophobic VP James Bragg who resigned over it in season 3 could have done that. He didn't, he instead ended up being president himself a couple seasons later
>>
>>221237924
Deke after being disgusted at the one woman's homophobia says "don't tell anybody, there's too many guys like me out there". There's another instance too which I don't remember specifically but I remember because it's weird the show did it twice.

i think you mean her homosexuality, and what he was saying basically amounted to him trying to be courteous because he respected her professionally. it wasnt any sort of acknowledgement that he was in the wrong, it was telling her to keep the fact she was gay a secret because homophobia was common enough that itd tank her career.

it was dumb and woke
the bolshevik effort to emancipate women was based on "freeing" them from householding and forcing them into large-scale socialised domestic services, namely heavy industrial work
the family unit was seen as another class that needed to be abolished in the class war

see Lenins speech @ International Working Women’s Day, 1921
>>
>>221239193
you are right, and unless there's a timeskip i guess we won't get to see zvezda
>>
>>221239232
Its dumb yeah but its exactly as you said the "freed" woman can also go to the moon. Take that capitalist pig dog! Soviets always tried to one up americans however pointless it was. US astronauts get 1 tube of ice cream, well ours get 2! etc etc. in reality they didn't 2 shits about equality other than party upper member were more equal than others.
>>
>>221239232
Screech about it being woke all you want, it still happened for real. So with a show set very shortly after the timeline diverged, the believable thing is for it to still reflect some of that.
>>
>>221239338
yeah. i guess they were worried about audiences getting bored if there wasnt a new storyline which is why were focusing on venus but tbdesu i enjoy famk's world enough that id have been fine with this show literally just being famk but the soviets. seeing the other side of the events of famk's early seasons would have been cool, but im not actually sure how much of that were going to get, at least any time soon
>>
>>221239368
>diverge
thats an understatement
it rapidly starts jumping sharks like North Korean Mars bases and shit
>>
>>221239399
When Star City was first announced, it sounded like it would be more of a prequel. Where it doesn't begin with Leonov landing on the moon (and then forgetting about him and never even showing his face...), instead it shows the efforts leading up to it and the reasons why the Soviets got there first. Them reaching the moon would be the triumph toward the end of the season. I might have preferred that
>>
>>221239440
I'm talking about Star City. Diverge is the correct word for it when it's still in 1969 or 1970
>>
>>221237760
Aaron Sorkin can write a good script on a technical level (having a solid beginning, middle, ending, etc), but his political are so dated, hyper left-wing, and awful. He injects his ideals into everything he writes. The worst part is he never questions if he's wrong. I watched all of the West Wing. It's an entertaining political show with its dialog, but it's so unrealistic that I have to roll my eyes.
Only the Democrats are smart and intelligent. Republicans can't debate well and are war mongering and corrupt, and they only need more education to realize that Democrats are right about everything. That's the West Wing. Also Texas is blue? What kind of fantasy nonsense is this. Texas has never been blue.

By chance Did you ever watch The Newsroom written by Sorkin? Sorkin made a big deal about how the government would never track people through our phones, and anyone who thinks so is a paranoid conspiracy theorist. Then literally, while the show was still airing, it was revealed the government uses our phones to track citizens.
>>
>>221235943
The problem with this show ?and For All Mankind) is that the writers don't actually want to explore alternate history scenarios. They only want to use alternate history as a background setting to explore their own personal political and to add lots of drama to the show.

We could have had an awesome show where the Soviet Union's top rocket scientist and engineer didn't fall sick and die, and see all the breakthrough technological ideas he was working on to push the Soviet program. Thus the Soviets were able to beat the Americans to the moon.

Instead these shows are just 95% filled politics, fighting, weird sex storylines, and lots of drama drama drama and more melo drama.

It's total wasted potential for such an interesting setting.
>>
>>221239617
>We could have had an awesome show where the Soviet Union's top rocket scientist and engineer didn't fall sick and die, and see all the breakthrough technological ideas he was working on to push the Soviet program
That arguably is what a large portion of the show is about. But his efforts are focused on getting to Venus instead of that first moon landing
>>
>>221239537
i dont really have any strong feelings about the west wing either way, it was just the first example off the top of my head of an evidently political show because i wanted to argue with the other anon kek (because for all mankind is not far behind it in terms of being overtly political in its premise)

i havent seen the newsroom (aside from the two famous clips, the one of jeff daniels saying america is in decline and the one of olivia munn speaking japanese). i find sorkin to be fairly hit or miss, more the latter than the former. his dialogue is not at all how real people speak but i think it can work; i think he needs the right team around him to rein him in and create a story that matches the vibe. a few good men is a fantastic fill and the wordy monologues are a huge part of making it as good as it is. but if hes given too much freedom his scripts are just reddit-sounding fantasy soapboxes for, like you say, outdated political grandstanding
>>
>>221235943
It's a show for women like all modern tv shows
>>
>>221239676
Sorkin would never allow a character in his show to genuinely challenge his political beliefs. For example, there would never be a Black or Latino Republican character who questions why all Democrat run cities are filled with homeless, drugs, and corruption. We would never see a debate between a competent and well spoken Republican character and a Democrat. Sorkin would NEVER allow that.

There would be no Republican character of color who asks why Los Angeles is one of the most richest cities on the planet, yet looks like a poor third world country is many parts of it. Theoretically LA is so rich that it SHOULD look like Dubai. Yet it's a drug and crime infested third world sh1thole. Where does the money go? Sorkin would never allow a true genuine debate in his show about that. It's a pity because I really like Sorkin's writing style and rapid dialog.
>>
>>221235943
The writers don't want to actually explore historical characters or events. They just want action figures so they rewrite history, make every gay, or rewrite important events to insert their own made up characters.

Like that Brown chick from For All Mankind who was an illegal Mexican but is somehow a genius and saves the Nasa problem multiple times. And no one cares challenge her girl power.

As someone who was alive during the Cold War, identity politics like today was not a topic back then. During the Cold war it was about arguing and debating which political system was superior. America VS the Soviet Union. It was some by making a bigger military, better technology, or great achievements like sending satellites into space or landing on the moon.

America won the Cold War in a rather stupid way. They went into massive debt and outspent the Soviet Union. The Soviets went bankrupt trying to keep up with America.
>>
>>221239046
I get what you're saying but I just don't buy that's what the writers meant entirely by the tone of the scene, and even if it was, I don't buy that the wording he used lines up with his previous reaction at all, and I don't buy that the writers weren't using him as a mouthpiece in the wrong way even if that's how they justify it his character speaking the words.

>>
>>221241145
If you didn't care about politics back in the 80s and 90s, then all you needed to do was change the channel, and avoid the newspaper.

Today, woke politics are everywhere. It's hard to avoid it.
>>
>>221241145
>the discourse about woke surrounding famk is always funny because without fail the stuff being called woke fanfic is just lifted from irl
IRL the higher ups gave less than a shit about the female cosmonaut (even the guy who started it was just interested scientifically), thought it would be disruptive, and it's unlikely landing her on the moon would have changed that outlook.
The black female astronaut was 20 years too early.
There has never been a female president. There has never been an openly gay president. Much less in the 90s.
If you want to say that somehow a woman landing on the moon would have magically changed society faster, be my guest. But don't act like these are things that actually happened. At best it's loosely based on real life events with an optimistic spin fueled by the writers' political leanings.
I don't find it very believable myself.

It's an alternate timeline, they can basically do whatever they want.
They cover a bunch of minor pop-culture stuff a the beginning of each season just because it helps to make the fictional timeline feel more grounded and nostalgic. S4's intro shows a clip from the movie Castaway, even though part of that movie takes place in post-USSR Moscow.
