Obviously it's a kids movie and the logic shouldn't be taken seriously but in toy story they make it pretty clear that being a toy is one of the worst fates imaginable
>they live forever and the only way to die is to be completely destroyed beyond repair
>based on how the real world treats toys, billions of them undoubtedly spend decades trapped in dark basements, attics, or closets
>toys can feel pain, no need to explain the horrifying implications of this
>they have to get used to their friends being taken from them or destroyed regularly
The only way to cope with being a toy is mastering dissociation or if they're able to go unconscious for extended periods
>>
>>221367802
why do they have to pretend being inanimate before people?

>>221367802
they will decay and break eventually. in 5 the sandboxes are basically detroit and the toys are all rusted and dying
>>
>>221367890
Woody literally controls it for Sid in the first movie

I would assume it would be so that humans don't think they've gone insane and start (rightfully) destroying the toys en masse.
>>
>>221367868
If they violate the masquerade, the Camarilla will hunt them down.
>>
Not this time, Bo.
>>
>>221367878
they should be, but if not the explanation would probably be something like "childlike imagination and innocence is what makes toys come to life, and sex toys weren't made to be loved by children"
>>
>>221367802
What makes an object a toy? Beau Peep is a lamp. That spork thing is just a utensil with a face drawn on it. If the face is all that matters, are all ornaments that depict people and animals alive? Are portraits?

None of them really seem to mind going limp and they find the idea of being in a display box reasonably tempting in 2, more like a comfortable retirement than a DARKNESS IMPRISONING ME scenario. I wonder if being away from kids is like being pleasantly sedated
>>
>>221367939
>sex toys weren't made to be loved by children
That's what they want you to believe
>>
>>221367941
The amish believe that dolls that have human faces are an insult to god and tend to get possessed by demons, so I guess that explains how a toy comes alive
>>
>>221368035
They are probably like the barbie dolls, too retarded and invested in their roles that they dont mind and actually enjoy being whores
>>
>>221367802
Immortality seems like a decent trade off for the rest of that stuff. There’s probably like a hyper-advanced subterranean toy societies formed in derelict Cold War and WWII structures by now.
>>
>>221367802
The Toys are souls that have bargained with God to avoid the fires of hell.
>>
OP, it took me a couple of rewatches to realize it, but I came to a similar conclusion. and I even feel they ever so subtly addressed this idea in the first movie.
In Toy Story 1, Buzz is the only one that seems to not realize he is a toy, everyone else is self aware. However, when they jump in the crane game, the little aliens are equally brainwashed, but its to the claw. They aren't mentioning star command, or crystallic fusion, etc. despite being in the same toy line as Buzz, they are just dedicated to the claw.

I think this is the doomed state of most toys you mentioned, the claw game is just an extreme example. Stuck in a box forever, hoping to be picked by a claw, eventually leading you to become mad.
>>
>>221367941
>questions no one ever cared about but Toy Story 4 answered anyway
>>
>>221368376
Yeah, not all toys are self-aware, many are actually stuck in character or are just retarded
>>
>>221368376
The aliens were in purgatory. They shed their canon backstories after leaving the packaging but never got to be played with, just put in a bigger box.
>>
>>221368404
So you think most toys when they come out of their packaging they quickly shed their backstory and take on their surroundings, and because the aliens were in the "bigger box" (claw machine) they inherited that as their personality. On the opposite end, maybe T-Rex thought he was a dinosaur at first but because his first out of box experience was as a toy with Andy, he's self aware? It kind of makes sense, except for Buzz, but I think the whole point of Toy Story 1 was that Buzz is an autistic retard toy.

the worst torture imaginable would be to kept alive forever.
yes even if you were literally orgasming endlessly. after a few years, you would be begging for death. now think about it after a thousand, or a million years. it's insane to think about. there are probably lifeforms out there that torture other lifeforms by keeping them alive endlessly through some tech we haven't discovered yet. nightmare fuel.
>>
>>221368482
There is no escape to infinity in the end
You can see both sides, living forever and just disappearing forever, and realize both are basically the same, we are trapped here forever
>>
>>221367802
real talk. toys are the souls of aborted babies getting a second chance
>>
>>221367993
Okay, "Bo" poop
>>
>>221368520
Eh? Disappearing forever is fine, it's not even close to the same. Do you remember being "trapped forever" during the Mesozoic? Was it just like the torment of living through the 18th century? Of course not, you didn't exist. Which is the state you will be in for the rest of eternity once the blip of your lifetime is passed.
>>
>>221368387
I think I've seen the first two or three
>>
>>221367941
What's also interesting are Sid's toys. The babyhead spider and skateboard man make sense, that the sentience was linked to the heads, and they adapted to their new bodies. But then you have something like the walking fishing pole. What was the living toy aspect of that one? The pole? The legs? And if something like the fishing pole were alive as just a fishing pole, was the skateboard alive before the man's torso was affixed to it? Is the skateboard still sentient, and it works in tandem with the man? What about the remaining parts? Are the legs now a separate, sentient toy? If not, would they become sentient if something like another fishing rod were affixed to them? Do the previous toys die upon Sid making a new toy, like when he made the duck PEZ dispenser, superhero torso, and suction cup spring toy, did all three of the previous toys die, and this new one came to life in their place?
This all troubles me greatly.
>>
>>221368566
The sensation is quite bleak either way, you just vanish and never live again for eternity? When you think about it deeply, it doesn’t feel that much better
>>
>>221368626
It's actually fine. Perfectly neutral in fact, fundamentally neither good or bad. Just going unconscious. I've had a few moments in life of the vanishing feeling, it's not so bad.

I've been having a legit existential crisis about these kind of thoughts for the past month or so. It's really fucking up my mental state. Constantly thinking about how one day I will die and all my loved ones will die and, from that point on, the possibility that we may never see each other again. It's in large part due to recently becoming and a father and the passing of my cat and possible illness of my mother. I really don't want to ever be apart from my son or for something bad to ever happen to him.
This shit just plays in my mind almost 24/7 and really blunts my happiness.
I like to thing like Einstein, that everything being the way it is simply can't be random happenstance, that there is more to everything and it's observable just by the nature of everything. I also quite like Carl Jung's ideas.
But yeah, my mind ruminates constantly on these questions that are quite legitimately impossible to answer. I don't know how to escape the thought loop. It's fucking my life up.

A child imparting some level of imagination seems to make toys sapient. This is why being sent to an attic or basement is a death sentence. Sid was creative and destructive with his imagination so the toys he stitched or rebuilt were alive. The only thing barring outright incineration to “kill” toys is someone not giving a damn about them. Sid still kept all his toys he just liked doing weird shit with them.

>>
>>221368482
>after a few years, you would be begging for death
I think I've been alive for a few years already
>>
>>221368987
Yes, arguably Sid put more love into it least the making of his toy creations than a lot of toys, which were simply bought off the shelf because they were on sale. But that still doesn't cover what happened to the component toys.
That said, Pete was alive even as a toy on the shelf, and was unwanted until Al saw him as an opportunity to make money. Did that love count as enough to bring him to life, and retroactively made him "remember" a stretch of time before he was actually brought to life?
>>
>>221368750
Once you get a real job and are working 60 hours a week you’ll be begging for death faggot
>>
>>221368750
Sorry for your loss but I don't get how this is supposed to be that distracting for anyone older than 25, it's a concept you should've grasped by now. Of course there's a time when you won't wake up anymore, all things must pass, including time with your family. Tough news, welcome to being alive. I don't like the whole "impermanence gives things meaning!" schtick but it is a fact of life you just have to get over, like how you can't fuck every hot girl you look at. I genuinely think you might benefit from a psyche trip or ketamine. Helps the brain get malleable about things and also gives you a taste of passing on by dissolving your ego to some degree.

Another way to think of it is imagining you're on summer vacation, what if it was July and you were pissing and shitting all day at the thought of it being over in September? Maybe try to enjoy the vacation dumbass

>>
>>221369467
I dunno, doesn't that imply impermanence itself is impertinent? I find the idea everything will one day cease some day to be too high-maintenance to not be something enacted consciously given our current understanding of reality; if thermodynamics hold true and the total some of the universe's energy remains fixed, then there's nothing we know of that can prevent the conception of the universe happening again after the end of days.
The Hindus would ironically be righter than the atheists; your mind is just a variable to be called on and left in stasis from reality to reality, to be reincarnated to whatever part the RNG landed on in that particular cycle. Only a literally omnipotent being could save us from that fate.

>>
>>221370566
Not that dude, but I find consciousness hard to comprehend. In the sense that I am this conciousness. How is consciousness assigned? Not to imply the divine is the only answer, but there's logic to everything I can't understand why I am me specifically and I came into being at this time in this specific body instead of any other body. Why was I not a consciousness sooner? Why am I experiencing this specifically and not the other gorrilions of consciousnesses that have and will exist?

It's their purpose to be inanimate objects that children can project their whims onto. Despite their consciousness they are still compelled to play their part.
They even "want" to play this part, almost without exception. It's really just an overriding of their individualism, they MUST do what they were made to do.
The Toy Story world is a world of essentialism, where beings with emergent consciousness are powerless and must serve their purpose. They're even blind to the servitude in which they're trapped.
The concept highlights this by being so extreme. Conscious beings must serve the purpose of being totally inanimate.
In the same way we are driven to serve the purpose of propagating life. Even those that don't reproduce are driven to connect with people. Despite all of our intelligence, we're driven to be genetic or social automatons.

It's really as simple as that.
Andy plays with Bo Peep and Bonnie plays with Forky so they're toys.

>Tablets aren’t bad. They’re educational! If you don’t give your child this wonder glass, they’ll be left out.
>The worst thing that can happen is cyberbullying. Just turn off chat features and you’re golden.
Meanwhile there’s evidence emerging that heavy screentime during early childhood is linked to reduced motor skills, attention span, and literacy. As well as increased anxiety and physical addiction symptoms.
