In season 1, they aged down Alicent in the show to make her the same age as Rhaenyra, whereas in the book Alicent and Rhaenyra's relationship is more of an "evil stepmother" relationship. I thought this was an interesting change and might add some greater complexity to the story, because the main characters of HotD don't really do much in the source material and the writers were gonna have to invent stuff for them to make a cohesive tv drama. But the point is that their whole conflict in the book makes sense because the two hate each other from the start. When they made the change to make them childhood best friends who are tragically on opposing sides, the writers then turned every deliberate thing they did against one another in the book into some kind of mistake, misunderstanding, or disobedience against them from their party. And then everytime tragedy occurs(e.g. Luke's death at the end of Season 1), when it feels like they're finally accepting that they can no longer just talk it out and need to fight, they regress back into wanting to avoid war.My concern with the direction of the show is how they handle the deteriorating relationship between the two characters- or if it even deteriorates- because I really disliked it when Alicent came to Rhaenyra at the end of season 2 and just said, "Yeah it's ok you can kill my sons but just spare Helaena and my granddaughter," as if her friendship with Rhaenyra is more important than the lives of her own kids. It feels like both characters are still in the "I can have my cake and eat it to" view and are still in denial of the reality of their situation. Is Alicent really gonna regress again after watching Otto die? The women are just perpetual victims, have no agency and were always morally correct, even in their murders. Knowing how the book ends it feels like the show is a direct attack on the source material, and that's why George is mad. Why would Aegon III ever declare Rhaenyra as illegitimate in the show?
