Hello /hor/. I really don't get horror movies. I try to watch them but nothing ever sticks. There are those Slasher type movies and I guess the entire point of those are "creative kills". I don't get what's interesting about that "OMG he got fed into a woodchipper!!!" So? What am I supposed to do with that. The only time a "creative kill" got me interested was this girl in picrel getting killed in "In a Violent Nature". I as like wtf is going on here? But even those few seconds weren't worth watching that entire slog of a movie.

Then there are those ghost/haunting movies. I admit I usually love the build up in those. The mystery is introduced, creepy stuff happens, it's atmospheric. But by the end, they all turn into some second rate action movie with the protagonist racing against the supernatural entity (which has now been revealed and has lost all it's mystique and creepiness) to complete some ritual to banish it. That's not why I'm watching this movie!

Zombieslop was saturated 15 years ago. "Elevated horror"? I fell asleep watching Hereditary multiple times. Can't imagine the retards who supposedly had nightmares and felt paranoid for months after watching that.

Don't even get me started on "comedy horror". Like that James Wan movie about that evil brain monster. WTF am I supposed to even feel while watching these movies? They fail at both being scary and funny. Also "OMG you have to watch 1986's Night of a Thousand Melted Faces!!! The outdated practical effects when that bikini clad girl got melted into a pile of goo (which were even shitty for it's own time) are peak!!!!" is soi as fuck.

People talk a lot about horror not getting it's dues from critics and award season but honestly? It's one of the most trite and repetitve genres out there.

SHARE YOUR HORROR WISHLIST!!!

(MUMMY 4)

> Treat Rick with cherishing respect like Maverick in Top Gun 2 (DO NOT Last Jedi-fy him)
> Maybe incorporate Fraser's back injury into the story, treat it kinda like Lethal Weapon treated Rigg's shoulder?
> Rick/Evie are still together & happy (be the anti-Dial of Destiny)
> Evie is not turned into a bitch or overt girlboss. Maintain her Mum Returns competence but do not go overboard.
> Alex is not killed off
> Lean more into horror.
> Have any present day villains within the story be Soviet/Maoist commies like Crystal Skull.
> It is received better than Dragon Emperor & 2017.

(OTHER HORROR)

> We get a period piece Conjuring spin off about the samurai armor in the Warren's collection, maybe set during the occupation of Japan?

> We get some more horror & slasher films set near the sea/on ships, make use of moody harbors, docks & foggy nights. A undead Sea Captain slasher would be cool.

> We get further mostly serious toned theatrically released killer animal films like The Shallows & Crawl. Ideally ones with oversized Scorpions and Octopuses. Remake of Tentacles (1977)?
> Crawl 2 is on par with the first.

> Antje Traue is cast as The Bride of Frankenstein, if that film in Universal's Dark Universe moves forward.

> If the Dark Universe moves forward, Dracula Untold is reinstated into canon. I want more of Luke Evan's take on the character.

> More Pumpkinhead movies.

> Cabin in the Woods anthology series with each episode (maybe every 2 episodes) being a different cast facing a different monster. Some arcs will focus on the folks in the Cabin & some will focus on the staff in the base dealing with capturing monsters out in the wild or having to deal with them getting loose.

> A B&W tribute movie to 1950s monster movies is that actually is fairly serious & well budgeted. Builds up mystery & suspense for the 1st 3rd.

> Galaxy of Terror prequel about Captain Trantor surviving the massacre of the Hesperus crew by aliens 25 years before.

> MORE FUCKING NUDITY IN THEATRICAL MAINSTREAM HORROR FILMS!

(OTHER SLASHERS)

> Scream 8 Onward - Sydney does not become a killer & is not killed off unless it's a respectful successful heroic sacrifice. Maybe have the film take place in snowy weather & invert Ghost Face's colors so he will blend in with the environment.
> Ideally the franchise goes dormant.

> The Blumhouse My Bloody Valentine reboot is on par with Halloween (18).
> It makes better more suspenseful use of the mine than the 09 remake did.
> Has nudity like 09.

> If they reboot ANOES again and wish to return Freddy to the horror & humor balance they got perfect in 3, consider Tom Hiddleston.

> The reboot/sequel to Madman (81) does not have a feminist bent to it despite the original film's producer claiming he plans to give it such (ignoring how great & strong of a final girl Gaylen Ross was in the original)

> Some more obscure non franchise slasher films get sequels/reboots with new stories. I would like to see something done with The Slayer or Superstition (both from 1982)

> A new serious toned slasher with a Samurai killer.

> We get Zodiac (07) / From Hell / The Town that Dreaded Sundown style slasher/murder mystery movies about the real life Axeman of New Orleans & the Hinterkaifeck farm massacre.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axeman_of_New_Orleans

(HALLOWEEN)

> The Miramax Halloween series treats Myers faithfully like a unstoppable supernatural phantom & has nudity.

> More stand alone Halloween comics like Nightdance. Maybe mini series that each follow up a different continuity in the series...
>- Myers & the cult hunting Jamie's baby after 6.
>- Adapt the early H7 script about Myers stalking a girls boarding school.
>- Myers hunting Laurie's son after H20.
>- Adapt the script for Rob Zombie's Halloween 3.
>- Adapt the script for Halloween Returns that was planned before the 2018 movie pitch.

> The earlier scripts for Halloween 4 are released online, I wanna see how Myers was defeated in the version of the script that had Sheriff Meeker fight Myers to the death in his basement resulting in his house burning down.

> The cut footage of the H5 police station massacre & Meeker's death are found & released despite their absence in the recent Blu-Ray that had the Dr Death opening (we know it was filmed because we have a BTS pic of Meeker getting shot)

> The full Face of Michael Myers short film is made despite the original kickstarter failing. Prelude Short - https://youtu.be/wCAxcOmVCNs

It's mostly just the bitrate I think so I'm not sure it would help. There are bits where there are spooky 'hidden' things in video or photos. You're supposed to see them though, the movie zooms in on them, and it's way better when they're gradually revealed because you literally can't see them until they resolve as you zoom in on the shitty youtube version.
When I first saw it I assumed they were doing like an edit to fade the ghost in as it zoomed, but nope, on the dvd and blue ray you can just see the things really obviously the whole time

OK I finished The Frighteners just now because I got too sleepy last night and this movie is 2 hours long for some reason. things that pissed me off were Lucy becoming instantly in love with Frank for no goddamn reason and just totally integrated into his bullshit immediately. I mean I guess this is a movie for children even though it's inexplicably rated R so I suppose that is childlike logic that since she is the only other woman in the story she MUST be the love interest even if it isn't set up at all. and Frank is a complete asshole who didn't deserve a happy ending in the first place. it was never explained to the audience as far as I know why he is such a reckless driver to the point where it actually drives the plot of the movie and what I came up with is that he must actually be passively trying to kill people in car accidents to he can get more ghosts into his indentured servitude grifting operation or something. but yeah he should have just died in at the end but again it's a movie for kids so I guess that can't happen. all that aside it was kino.

I saw it in middle school of all places. Not really a fan of musicals, but it was ok. Anything with Rick Moranis and John Candy was generally going to be a fun film.

Yeah I'm not huge on musicals either but Little Shop manages to have at least some decent songs. The creature effects were one of the main things I liked about it, plus yeah, Rick Moranis and John Candy made it a really fun film overall.

Man, I miss John Candy

Imo it's just not that good stuff to adapt. Same goes for a lot of king and lovecraft. The idea of the content it better than seeing the content played out.

I'm sure it can be done, but often requires heavy adaptation which can piss off fans. But it's also just hard to do well.

Unless I've misunderstood your ESL speak, that makes no sense. You're talking about three of the most famous names in horror and you're saying their stuff isn't good enough to adapt?

Lovecraft is different because his stuff is more cosmic horror and that is inherently difficult to portray but there's no reason Ito and King can't have good adaptations. King has had good adaptations but Ito hasn't for some reason.

It just seems like they don't put in any fucking effort.
>>221526579

Heck yes vro, ts gon be peak. Gonna mog Obsession even!
>>
>>221527139
King has had good adaptations but they're shockingly few and far between considering the number of them and how well regarded his writing is. For every The Shining (which king doesn't even like largely because again, it's heavily adapted), you get 5 or more Dreamcatchers. Look up a list of stephen king inspired movies and look at all the fucking stinkers in there. There are way more than junji ito adaptations. If Ito had as many as king you would probably have changed on a decent handful, but as it stands there are only like 4, maybe 5 total?
>>
>>221527204
Also I should add, anime itself doesn't facilitate horror well. There are literally zero good horror anime series, and maybe like 3 good horror anime scenes in total across the entire medium.
>>
>>221527204
Dreamcatcher started out well and then drove off of a cliff. What a disappointment.
>>
>>221527221

Another, Corpse Party, Higurashi, Shiki, Perfect Blue, Mieruko-chan.
6 off the top of my head.
>>
>>221527025
I don't get what people think is wrong with Maniac / Collection. Yeah I guess the animation is cheap but it's still fun.
I'm surprised a Western studio hasn't tried an adaption of his stuff. His third rate ideas are still more entertaining than the body horror ideas they cook up (what if an Asian girl turned white ahh)

Another has 1 decently spooky scene and a good premise but isn't scary. Haven't seen corpse party to comment. Higurashi has 1, maybe 2 spooky scenes, overall is good, but still not actually scary. Shiki again, 1 good spooky scene, but overall not scary. Perfect blue probably the best answer since it's got an inherently more serious tone than most if not all serial tv anime.
Mieruko-chan I should maybe watch, haven't seen that one either
I'll add one, Dark Gathering is mostly goofy but it does have 1 or two well done spooky scenes, but same issue as all the others, it's not enough to justify it being a good horror.
>>
>>221527403
Do you think something has to be scary or spooky to be horror or even good horror?
Horror is about themes. It doesn't have to scare you to be good. Horror comedy isn't scary at all yet it's still part of the genre and capable of being good.

You said there's zero good horror anime. What you probably should have said was "I haven't found any horror anime to be particularly scary", although you even admitted they had spooky scenes, if only few in number, so..

>Bathed in the glow of Dario Argento’s PHENOMENA and Lucky McKee’s MAY, Angus Silver’s INSECSTASY is for all the lonely perverts who’ve always wanted to be annihilated by the weight of their desire. A homage to 1970s erotic thrillers with a touch of creepy-crawly, INSECSTASY carries an offbeat, dark sense of humor and a violet-cast color scheme. Piercing the sterility of contemporary life with the disruptive transgression of eroticism, Silver’s film features dreamy fantasy sequences that interrupt and disrupt, drawing us expertly into its characters’ sensual and unusual interiority.

Watching Saw VI. The opening scene is fucking hilarious
>>
I watched "Nightmares" (1983). It's a horror anthology containing 4 short films. Not even a framing story like "Torture Garden" (1967) or "The Vault of Horror" (1973), they didn't bother with that. Just one story after the other, like segments of the Twilight Zone, only not as good as the Twilight Zone. A young mother goes shopping after midnight despite being warned by radio and television that a deranged knife-wielding serial killer is loose in her neighbourhood. Emilio Estevez reaches the 13th level of a shooter game in a video arcade. Father Lance Henriksen has a crisis of faith and gets attacked by a black demon car. A family has a giant rat in their house.
The movie has the production value of a Universal movie and actors known from other movies. It's just that the stories aren't very scary.

Horror is a fantasy genre, and that naturally allows for a lot of creativity. Even with established tropes, there's endless ways to use them, to depict the horror. Make-up and effects are, themselves, an art within the art. It's easy to see why many people are drawn to it, although not everyone will be.
