An auteur cannot be formulaic, they must re-discover the film from ground up for every single movie. They must never repeat a 'style' from one film to the next. Auteurs who merely repeat a gimmick from one film to the next are merely doing a circus act.

>Dinner in Lyon with the actress B.O [Bulle Ogier] who tells me of the suicide of J.E. [Jean Eustache], the filmmaker: on the eve of that day, he convokes his old mother, whom he hasn't seen in years, and, as an accessory for a film, asks to borrow her single-shot pistol. The mother brings it to him. That same day he has his friends buy him several bottles of gin, he drinks them, he goes home alone and calls an old mistress to insult her, someone he never thinks of and who doesn't understand the reason for his call, it's two o'clock in the morning, this man is a gambler and dons his black casino suit, he fills his pockets with chips, sets a tape recorder, which he plugs in, on a stool in front of him, sits down and fires a shot into his head with the single-shot pistol. The recording is seized by the police, it will be given to his son when he comes of age.

Obayashi is such a fanboy. He wished he could've been part of the golden age of Japanese cinema and he makes so many stylistic references to them but also very open ones. Hausu is the surface level pick for normies which everyone and their grandma has watched but once you dig deeper into Obayashi's films you really begin to appreciate him once you have have seen what came before him. It's very fun!

>You need to post here more. I think I'm the only Fassbinder fan in this hallowed ground.
I shall post more Fassbinder posts then. Lots of Fassbinder coming up soon on my list.
Petra Kant I watched with the gf and warned her that it's going to get weird and the stiff acting (which Germans do and which Germans hate watching) is going to be even more exaggerated. But to my surprise she vibed with it and we had a blast with the film. It's humorous at times but also surprisingly deep and interesting to dissect in all sorts of ways.
I also love how Fassbinder is such a weeb for Godard. He's so over the top Godard in some of his films that it becomes silly.
>>
>>221621001
Personally, I'm never too keen on any crime films but I have lots of Ishii on my list already. So I'll put it on the pile as well, I guess

Well, he was a Sirkaboo first and foremost, but the spectre of Godard -- who in turn was haunted by Brecht (or 'Uncle Bertolt', as he used to call him), another cornerstone for RWF -- is always present...
>>

>Favourite screwball comedy pairing

William Powell and Myrna Loy for strictly screwball comedy and Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland for movies in general, although Flynn and Alan Hale St had the best comedic chemistry and I rate above both.
>>
>>221621322
He modelled his directorial style after Sirk. The sense of hysteric, 'campy' melodrama is the most obvious connective tissue, but there's a lot of shared DNA (even in the way they block actors inside a frame, or how in certain Fassbinders, the color grading is meant to resemble Sirk's 1950s technicolor). Tragic finales (again, Brecht). Fear Eats the Soul is basically a pseudoremake of All That Heaven Allows. You should read the essay I posted an excerpt of, even if you don't care for Sirk. It's a decent primer.

>It's not a style of filmmaking I enjoy and not in genres I enjoy
If you liked Petra Von Kant, Fear Eats the Soul, the BRD trilogy, Querelle, etc. I'm sure his stuff would hold some appeal to you. I'm not saying you HAVE to watch Sirk to understand Fassbinder, but it helps you get where he's coming from, the same way watching Hitchcock helps you contextualize (for example) Brian De Palma's shtick.
>>
>>221621874
>>221621920
I understand your love for Sirk. I love Fassbinder and I love his films but I'm completely fine not digging into his inspirations when I most probably won't enjoy my time with those films. I love weird, foreign shit and Hollywood, even old Hollywood, is not what I love. I'm not saying I won't ever appreciate it but that's at least for right now.
It's even a slight miracle I ever got into Fassbinder. As a German it's always slightly icky to watch German films, especially when they're not from the golden era before the war.

Basically all budget gets blown on tv crime with the shittiest acting you can imagine. Germany hasn't been revelant in film history since the war. Another thing is that you grow up here watching dubbed American stuff so seeing a German film with no dubbing is just very uncanny. It's a barrier you have to jump over before you can appreciate German films as a German.
As an aside: I hate dubbing and I hate it when they do overdubbing even in German films. Not hearing Kinski himself was such a loss in Herzog's films.

>Basically all budget gets blown on tv crime with the shittiest acting you can imagine.
You really have no idea what you're talking about.
You're seriously using TV productions as examples for "high budget" when the Babelsberg studios are one of the hubs of worldwide cinema and regularly host some of the highest budget projects there are.

Again, no, it's not. The Tatort budget per 90-minute episode is laughable compared to what gets invested in even third rate films by Till Schweiger or Bully Herbig. We're talking 2 million at the very most vs. 10+ million.
>>
All the money should go to Petzold.
>>
>>221623672
Don't have the numbers. But Babelsberg definitely had become a goto address for European streaming productions. London/Pinewood being the other obvious choices.
Still hosts lots of mainstream cinema projects as well.

Speaking of Babelsberg and Netflix: Basically none of my friends (and me included) initially wanted to watch Dark as soon as we heard it was German. Watching German things as a German is usually associated with it being terrible. Gone are the days of the early 20th century German film superiority.
(Pic only slightly related since the film was rather mid. But the set design was neat.)

People like you are the reason why this general is shit now and I really shouldn't even be replying, but I do want to take the chance to point out that the film was originally meant to end with a woman giving birth to a child.
With that as context, "what's the path to immortality?" In Jodorowsky's eyes, it's starting a family. It's a heartwarming message, if anything. Regardless of what you think of the man.
