There is no way this is a legitimate scene, in a legitimate, massive-budget Hollywood movie.

I choose not to believe this. This is an Asylum film. No highly-paid cinematographer, storyboard artist, costume designer, producer, and director looked at this daily and said "Yep, that's it. Print it, call it a day."

It's always been a challenging story to adapt because it's a fucking poem spread across 24 books written to be sung alongside music. It's told in a weird achronological order, makes constant references to other stories and cultural concepts particular to bronze age greece that require a paragraph of footnotes for modern audiences and is generally a story about a noble and cunning hero being strung along by forces beyond his control and shat on repeatedly because the gods are dicks.

It's very much the ancient greek version of Job and translating that to a modern audience with no real context for ancient greece beyond the disney hercules movie and 300 is a huge undertaking.

Are you guys seriously whining about stuff that actually happened in the poems? This is a poem from thousands of years ago. People's minds were simpler. They literally thought hay would feel like wool.

You mean classical age Greece. While it has some details that were added to make it feel like the Bronze age setting, the characters, their actions, their customs and values, etc, are all very much Classical.

This is why I'm tired of the historical accuracy retards crying about muh Bronze age. This is very much a classical Greek story.

Maybe if someone made it as a tv series. But the big dilemma to me is how to render the Greek Gods. That's consistently what directors are afraid of ever doing. Funnily enough at least with the Iliad you can run a parallel scene, as Iliad book five has Athena and Diomedes:
>As Diomedes prayed, Pallas Athena heard.
>She put fresh strength into his legs and upper arms. 140
>Standing close by, she spoke. Her words had wings.
>“Take courage, Diomedes, in this fight with Trojans.
>I’ve put your father’s strength into your chest,
>that shield-bearing horseman’s fearless power.
>And I’ve removed the filter from your eyes
>which covered them before, so now,
>you’ll easily distinguish gods from men.
>If a god comes here and stands against you,
>don’t offer to fight any deathless one,
>except for Aphrodite, Zeus’ daughter. 150
>If she fights, cut her with your sharp bronze.”

So you won't have a 12 foot Ares running around, or humans fighting and then along comes a Marvel capeshit character. You could do some clever play with the beguilding - appearing and disappearing,

>>221797618
Absolute horseshit. It is thoroughly archaic or even geometric dark age Greek. It has absolutely nothing to match to classical antiquity. Even Tasting History remarked about the later Greek or Roman writer who wrote how the Iliad's guys ate meat only and never fish, which is wildly off the mark for the predominance of fish in classical greek cuisine.
>>
>>221798252
Same here, the whole point of the story is our clever hero outwitting the monster, not just stabbing him with a fucking stick and booking it like a retard.

Cyclopes in Greek mythology fell into two camps:
>inbred retards who can't into farming
>Genius master craftsmen, sired by Uranus (Sky) and Gaia (Earth)
Because the cyclopes in the Odyssey were sired by Poseidon and a sea nymph, they're all inbred retards. His offspring aren't suited towards land anyway since the sea is inherently tempestuous; they represented uncontacted island tribes that the Greeks would colonize and civilize.
So Polyphemus' brothers quite literally tell him to shut the fuck up if nobody blinded him because they're that retarded. Poseidon gets offended because all his children are that inbred and retarded. It fits.

It’s the Laestrygonians but from the medieval version. Nolan used sections from Homer, Roman’s and medieval versions

Basically they violate the laws of the god with the Trojan horse fake gift and kill everyone in blood lust
Then they are in the land of the gods once they go out to the deep sea but you don’t realize it until 2/3s
They aren’t on earth anymore. It’s the realm of the gods. So every island they find has some weird god shit going on.
Everyone dies besides Oddy and he doesn’t get back to the real world until he finally pays his penance and leaves his fate in the gods hands mainly Poseidon.

He only survives the entire thing because from the start he’s praying to the gods but trying to control his fate. Zeus more or less protects him from Poseidon because he listened to the gods about the cattle.

So yeah the Laestrygonians moving the trees around to trap them and eat them later. It’s not bad editing but “magic. It’s hats why they are all like wtf.

Also the big twist is…

They are the “people from the sea” everyone is scared of

Oh thank God. I really want to see the modern-day jaded 105 IQ feminist's rendition of a classic masculine hero story that nobody's ever heard of on the big screen, not the actual classic masculine hero story that everyone actually gives a fuck about and knows and would realistically expect.

Between that, the niggers, the troons, its quite obvious Nolan is just the name they slapped on and this is a seething kike attack on western civilization, hence the absolutely bonkers levels of artifical shillery and the botswarms on reddit eating it up despite it being blatantly obvious what's happening to anyone capable of basic reasoning (or of actually reading the Odyssey in the first place kek)

Knew this would be the end result when Nolan announced he was doing the Odyssey
Not even a Nolan hater, but his filmmaking sensibilities are so dyed-in-the-wool now that it was inevitable we'd get this bleak, joyless, sterile piece of weary old dogshit. I bet Nolan was climbing up the walls by the end without urban cityscapes and big famous buildings and cold interiors and all that shit.
Oh but he wants to make his profound statement on the history of storytelling and the masculine ego or whatever.
He should stick to period dramas and/or big blockbuster modern action films where his grey concrete aesthetic can shine
God the costume designs in this film look so fucking appalling. Where's the sense of myth and place? This film looks about as Greek as the Northman. The Mediterranean is a sunny place. Why is the lighting in this film so washed out and utterly artless?

I might just be the only one absolutely sick to death with every big Hollywood actor as well at this point. Matt Damon, Jon Bernthal, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron just bin them all. They're dogshit. Tom Holland is a goofy little dude who looks eternally like he's lemon-sucking, but not an actual actor. Zendaya has one expression and one role and even she is astounded no one's caught onto her con at this point. Robert Pattinson is a mediocre actor - his career is elevated entirely by those around him.
It's the Odyssey for goodness sake. Cast some proper theatre actors. People whose every word is rich in gravitas and pathos. Anyone but Matt Damon, king of bland.
Nolan could have stuck anyone in this film and sold it entirely on his name alone.

The cyclops traps them by blocking the cave with a huge boulder. They can't move the boulder themselves, so they can't afford to kill the cyclops.

I heard estimates of 200m being idealistic/hopeful. Honestly I feel incredibly lucky that between mutual interest in greece and the bronze age and Dune Dune got off well enough. Like yeah, Chani's actress can just scowl and that's it, there's issues I have with it but at the end of the day it's a film I can enjoy. This is such a fucking abomination anyone impressed by it is purely doing so because of culture wars reasons or because Nolan is the designated auteur "sophisticated and mature" director. Have the exact same film, no changes but have another director attributed to it and it would be panned as an epic disaster.

The introduction I saw Wilson do for the Odyssey reminded me of the Atlantic article about us being in a post-literate world. It so perfectly captures the dumbing down simplification of prose. It reads like a fucking high school student having to haltingly and without cadence and rhythm you KNOW FUCKING POETRY recite shakespear.

And the audacity, the sheer fucking hubris of Wilson going

>>

The Odyssey isn't a masculine hero story, that's the point.
Odysseus is blown of course because his Trojan Horse offended Poseidon.
Then his ships and crews are decimated because he defends himself against the man-eating cyclops after it's murdered and devoured a half dozen of his crewmen. Because the cyclops is a son of Poseidon and cries to daddy for vengeance.

It's a story of the cruelty and caprice of the Greek gods, and the hapless perseverance of a man whose only motivation is to return to his loving wife. It's an enduring story not because Odysseus is manly and powerful, but because you can see how he suffers, how he fails at every step of the journey, and how his ordinary human limitations undermine him. At the end of his travels, he has nothing. He washes ashore naked from a shipwreck and has to beg the denizens of a foreign island to help him, and it's his recounting of the harrowing story that convinces them to bring him back to his home.

Feminists trying to make the Odyssey about gender would be like Americans trying to make Islam about Jews.

Circe IS the beautiful goddess who seduces Odysseus for 1 year. She does end up being genuinely helpful after Hermes instructs Odysseus regarding using Moly and just letting Circe have sex with him.
Calypso is the beautiful nymph who forces Odysseus to be her sex slave for 7 years while he's constantly crying about it.
Nolan chose to go with a "feminist retelling" interpretation of Circe where she's a traumatized abuse victim instead of "baleful minded" and pulling her shit for the love of the game.

>my novel interpretation that the Greeks meant it in a more laconic prosaic than POETIC fashion is correct.
It really is hilarious when you look at the comparisons side by side and realize that Wilson had to absolutely butcher the prose all because of her obsession with Iambic pentameter.
She literally can't use too many big words because otherwise her lines won't fit into her self-imposed 10-syllable restriction. Hence why we get "wrecked the holy town of Troy" instead of "plundered the hallowed heights of Troy" because it's too many syllables.
Hell, she can't even call it a "city" because that's one too many syllables for the line. She's fucking retarded.

No, Odysseus literally gets forced into a sexual relationship with two deities in the Odyssey. With Calypso, it's literally in the text that he's raped (the Greeks didn't view it that way necessarily, since it was more about a woman controlling a man, but he's literally a sex slave).
Circe's is muddier, but it's stated it was more of a consensual thing. His men have to drag him away from Circe by the end of the year. She's supposed to be hot as FUCK.

Ignore that poster
Odysseus is clearly a traditionally masculine hero
Forbearance, paternal/family values and honour, feats of cunning, skill, and strength etc.

Nolan clearly scrutinised the text and applied a modernistic literate lens to it. I'm sure he could have made a souped-up version of the Armand Assante film replete with a funny flying Hermes, but Nolan is far cerebral and dour to do such a thing. That's of course why he casted Spiderman and Frownwoman, Maskusummin, and Travis Scott in the film.

That's not true at all. It is a story of Odysseus's hubris fucking him over when he taunts the cyclops he just tricks by revealing his own name. Hubris is an extremely common motif in Greek tragedies, and while you are meant to sympathize and root for Odysseus, the audience also is meant to know full well that Odysseus made a mistake and owns everything that follows. He's a tragic hero because Greeks ate that shit up.

Yes, in the movie. Obviously there are some differences, but not as drastic as that anon is implying. Odysseus and Telemachus killing the suitors is portrayed as heroic.

Of all the themes of the original poem, the theme of guest right and being a good host/good guest (xenia) is the one the film leans into most heavily.

Athena is the easiest one, considering she can be just a woman who appears from time to time talking to the heroes. No wonder Nolan had no problem in depicting her in human form despite being too much of a coward to depict other gods.

honestly looks like she should be getting thrown on the ground by a cop while screaming Idedunuffin and waving around a broken obama phone
>>

You misinterpreted the clip. Zendaya was actually performing a broad variety of emotional responses.

Why is Circe terrified to see a man

The suitors violated xenia first by abusing his hospitality and trying to kill his son.

This. Athena is clearly depicted as full of life and expression if you actually watch the film

>>221800325
There is literally nothing to suggest this narrative you are spinning. You might just be retarded.

Who let the guy who directed the action for Dark Knight Rises direct the fucking Odyssey?
>>
I don't think it even deserves a 1/10

its funny how bad movies are now, just kill the rest of them with AI and be done with it. the era of the LOTR trilogy is dead.

just tried watching this tripe. WTF is the lighting and sound so terrible? The script is bad enough to only get 2 stars.

None of you in this thread can judge a movie by webm clips from a shitty cam rip. That’s not how a movie is meant to be experienced. It’s like watching an opera while deaf and with one eye closed

>The Odyssey isn't a masculine hero story, that's the point.
what the fuck am I reading
shall we describe Odysseus?
>that kingly man, master mariner and soldier
>the man with massive hands who out-threw all the Phaiakians, and offered to take on all comers at any sport except running, because his time at sea ruined his conditioning
>greatest in the world with a bow of all men who eat bread upon the earth
>greatest in plotting and storytelling among mortals
>the man who had the heart to endure everything to return to his family and set his house in order
>the man referred to more than once as a lion, finally and quite fittingly when covered in the gore of the suitors he'd just slain
were he not hypermasculine, he could not have achieved glory

Fine European stock in this film.
>>
>>221800653
No amount of spectacle or scale associated with viewing this in IMAX is going to fix the glaring issues which can be seen here. I'm astonished how much Nolan is getting worse over time in terms of his indulgence in all the retarded shit people tolerated in his films over the years. People liked his works in spite of all the dumb shit he did, not because of it. And this movie seems to be a greatest hits of all the groan inducing bullshit from all his previous films.
>>

The made for tv ones were far better than this shit.

the eternal /ourguy/ Pageau likes it. He has an IQ in the 140-145 range and busts subversive propaganda all the time so his praise for nolan's storytelling means it's going to filter most /tv/irgins

A PC game released in 2002 had a better rendition of Odysseus and the Trojan war than this movie did

What's wrong with rap? You have no answer to this, because you're a cretin who only wants to see wizards and elves and dwarves for the ten thousandth time.

>>
>>221800963
why dont we just put tiktok memes in the iliad

why not add Achilles saying "six sevennnn"
>>
>>221800923
No he does not. He makes movies that present themselves as intellectual but actually aren’t. There’s no deep philosophical agenda to the Joker or Inception. He’s just a crazy clown who says clever things to make the audience think he’s a genius. And Inception is just about making movies. That is the trick Nolan plays.
>>
>>221800761
Yeah all that kino hollywood was producing from the late 90s-2018 and then it abruply stopped. 2017 was such a great year for movies, like Boss Baby.

Rap is a respected musical genre, it is not comparable to "tiktok memes". Again, you're a cretin with no argument.
