Yeah, but for what it’s worth it really is a generational regression and funding issue. The schools I tutored at shortly had brown water coming out of the pipes and high staff turnover. Doorframes literally falling apart when people walk through them. The students responded well to intervention but their point of contact and support systems leave so often that any progress is impossible to sustain. The high performing black students get funneled into magnets programs. A low performing student might look like a 5th grader struggling to write 3 sentences even with sentence starters provided- not a lot you can do to help them at that point. The culture recently has changed due to aggressive community action and changing role models but the damage is done and the parents don’t know what the fuck to do a lot of the time aside from superficial generalizations.Granted this is my perspective from tutoring. The actual classes are probably an even worse experience than what I saw.
