classic weird cronen-machines, gratuitous nudity, star actors - also like my favourite of his The Brood it had a plot that I had no idea where it was going until it pulled one out at the end like a magic trick.

>"The Haunted Palace"
Starts with an Edgar Allan Poe quote -- just to be pretentious, the film has nothing to do with Poe but is based on "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward", "The Color out of Space" and "The Shadow over Innsmouth" by H.P.Lovecraft.
Great sets, but that's about the only thing that can be said about that movie.

I had seen "The Haunted Palace" when I was very young, and it made an impression on me. Later when I re-watched it I had already read Lovecraft and found it was a cheap mish-mash of many of his ideas. The sets are great, the acting is very good, it has Vincent Price in it, and the cinematography is also decent. I guess on second viewing I was just disappointed because I liked the stories from which the ideas had been taken better than the movie.

Also I never got the appeal of the Poe "adaptations" by Corman. Poe was an early writer of "the macabre", but pretty tame even by 1960's standards. At first I thought maybe Poe is the only American author they know of, but later thought that can't be it. So it was probably just a combination of a well known name plus that the statutes of copyright had expired and the stories were in the public domain and therefore available at no cost at all.

Just finished. All right, it was a few hours ago, but I needed to tap after. This was a fucking fantastic event. Two classic Dohler movies introduced by the Count with a panel between of actors and behind-the-scenes folks from both movies, and even a blooper reel after the double feature. Cool stories, awesome for me to see some of these people in person.
Alien Factor is great regional no budget ($3500 in 1976) cinema where a spaceship lands outside a small town and the released aliens cause bloody mayhem. Has at least THREE monsters, beat that shit
Night Beast is a straight remake only with more money, Evil Dead style, except they knock it down to just one alien. Great effects, hilarious acting. Dick Dyzel who plays the Count was in both movies as the same character.
This was where I got my Leanna Chamish selfie.

How is quoting Poe pretentious? Poe is pop culture that Americans read in school.
>>
>>221892752
As I said: The entire movie had nothing to do with Poe at all. It's like showing a picture of Iron Man and then proceeding to show a 3rd rate Troma film.
>>
>>221892871
They probably chose a Poe quote because they wanted a quote with a spooky vibe and he's a recognizable horror figure.
>>
>>221892935
I just looked it up. They've taken the plot from three Lovecraft stories but the TITLE from a poem by Poe. Just the title, nothing more. That's why they probably had an excerpt from that poem at the beginning of the movie.

I still call that a pretty lousy way to trick the audience into buying a ticket for the theatre.
>>
>>221893088
but lovecraft is more recognizable than poe for the average audience, that doesn't make sense
>>
>>221893127
Maybe not in 1963. Lovecraft wasn't very famous when he was alive or in the years after his death. It took a while. In fact, "The Haunted Palace" (1963) was the first very loose Lovecraft adaptation, "Die, Monster, Die" (1965) the first real adaptation that was close to the source story and not just taking a motif or an idea from Lovecraft.
>>
>>221893127
>>221888163
there is an overlap between lovecraft and poe fans
people who like lovecraft's stuff tend to also be aware of poe
>>
>>221893088
>I still call that a pretty lousy way to trick the audience into buying a ticket for the theatre.
Corman knew how to make a profit lol
>>221893127
>lovecraft is more recognizable than poe for the average audience
I don't think so, at least not in the US. Maybe "Cthulu" as a pop culture monster nowadays is bigger than Edgar Allen Poe, but the average person is still more likely to know Poe by name than Lovecraft.
>>
>>221893238
>Corman knew how to make a profit lol
They had a documentary about Corman on the Franco-German culture channel once, unfortunately I only caught the second half of it. But it was wild. They interviewed former crew members and stars and they told stories about how for example they would start shooting at a place and then the cops came and everybody would grab their gear and just run, because Corman was too cheap to pay for a proper permit.

All in all Roger really had a talent to make a cheap production kind of work. For example he was hired to film "Captain America" only so that the rights to the IP wouldn't expire, and I think he was given under 1 million dollars to do it. The finished film was instantly shelved and never released, but people who have seen it said it was impressive for how low the budget was.

>>221895094
Yeah, but you'll have to get through a whole film with an improvised script to get to the final scene. Also it's 1960s "special effects" that were available at a Roger Corman minibudget. Nice colors, though.
>>
>>221888351
Dude practically defined the horror literature genre and was considered a classic author. Not having to pay for his stuff was definitely a plus though.
>>
>>221895155
>Yeah, but you'll have to get through a whole film with an improvised script to get to the final scene.
It’s Vincent Price and Peter Lorre shenanigans. It’s charming.
>>
>>221895187
Maybe in America, but in Europe there were definitely a number of French, English and German authors writing ghost and horror stories. Some of them definitely more spooky/scary than Poe's stuff. The very first horror movies adapted European stories like Dracula, Frankenstein and Werewolves. Then it seems the genre slept for a decade and came back with the youth culture of the 1960s, with teenagers wanting to go to the theatre or the drive-in for kicks every week. That is of course the era of Corman in the US and Hammer in England. Mainland Europe was more into crime at the time with a record number of neo-noir films and Edgar Wallace adaptions being filmed there.
>>
>>221895155
Yes, the girl had some dumb reason why she led them all into a "completely new and undiscovered" cave. Honestly the movie was atmospheric in the buildup but not very subtle and a bit too many foreseeable jumpscares. CBA finishing it

The Alien Factor is a fantastic Cinematic Titanic live show that is easily on par with the best of prime Mystery Science Theater 3000. I know for a fact that it’s on Tubi, and I think it might even be on YouTube.

Rifftrax did Galaxy Invader too, and while it’s not as good as the aforementioned Alien Factor, it’s still prettt damn good. There’s several of the cast of Alien Factor who return too. The “totally-not-Jaws-mayor” from Alien Factor is a friendly scientist who wants to help rescue the alien from the evil rednecks, the alien hunter from Alien Factor is one of the evil rednecks, and the coroner from Alien Factor is the abused wife of the main evil redneck.
