Odysseus being ashamed and lame defeats the entire purpose of being tied to the sirens. It was so out of character when matt damon went from dooming to "lol ill be the only 1 to ever hear their song and survive"

Women want all the benefits of equality while they mutilate and humiliate men, throw men out of the work force, and reduce men to simps and simpletons so even women can conquer them, but also want men to be a 6'7 muscle chad who will heroically sacrifice his life for her.
It's just another case of retarded foid getting what she asked for without considering that what she wanted was stupid and with consequences.
She really wanted Odysseus to be a giga chad king of the simps if that makes sense (it doesn't, which is why it's awful).

Tell me you're a buttmunching theatrefaggot without telling me etc.

Retellings are faithful by definition. If they're not faithful, they're not retellings, they're homages - whether you happen to use the "branding" of the original or not. Adaptations into different media have a limited latitude to make changes, but only insofar as they are literally required and necessary to account for the constraints of the new medium.

You can either agree or admit you're a massive gayboy, those are the only two options available.

I dunno why he's put "colonial invader" in scare quotes. The Greeks regularly set up colonies in foreign lands and understood them in similar terms that we would. "Metropolis" literally means mother city and refers to the people who a colony originally descended from. The incredibly famous Melian Dialogue discusses colonial dynamics between the Melians and Sparta. Alexander the Great's generals ruled over foreign kingdoms as minority rulers who installed their own countrymen as military elites.

The Greek 100% had a concept of colonial invaders.

I specialize in a different region/time period, so I can't really substantiate this or argue about it, but as somebody who keeps up with the literature on ancient history and archeology and interacts with a lot of researchers, the consensus among actual Classicists is that Wilson's translation is fine

>savages
Her logic here seems reasonable to me, assuming it is true that the Greeks didn't have the same conceptualization of savages/barbarians that people today do, and as far as I know, they didn't: Being savage/barbarous to the Greeks simply meant any culture that didn't speak a Greek language, is my understanding of it, which is quite different from how those terms are understood by people today.

"You're just mad because they're a woman/black/LGBT" is obviously used commonly by SJWs to just deflect legitimate criticism, but in this case WIlson's translation really DOES just seem to be something people shit on because she's a woman, and secondarily because it's just not written in a flowery, old-timey type of phrasing. Any time I've seen someone actually try to critique the translation choice's accuracy, I see way more people who seem to know Greek to a greater extent bring up what seem to be compelling counterpoints as to why it makes sense.

You can argue i'm not in a position to evaluate that since my area of expertise isn't Greece, but actual experts in the Classics I know think it's fine, and by that logic nobody is allowed to have an opinion on it unless they speak/read Ancient Greek themselves, which would bar like 90% of the people seething about her translation too.

They were colonial invaders, tho

>Mehmed II, who had followed the Western world closely since an early age, knew the story of Troy. During the conquest of Lesbos, Mehmed II came to the place featuring the ruins of Troy in Çanakkale and examined what was left behind and Troy's location. He also had the graves of Achilles and other heroes searched.
>He praised the heroes of the Trojan War, which were also praised by Homer in his work, implying his appreciative feelings. The sultan's historian Kritovulos wrote that Mehmed II nodded his head at the Trojan ruins and said: "God hid me as the ally of this city and public until this time. We defeated the enemies of this city and took their homeland. Greeks, Macedonians, Thessalians and Moreans had taken this place. We took revenge on their bad behaviors toward us, Asians, from their grandchildren even if many ages and years have passed."
>>
>>221963452
The Turks killed and raped the actual decedents of Troy.
>>
This movie is about the decline of high-trust societies, which is pretty based for a modern movie. Shame about literally everything else around it.
>>
>>221961436
People shit on her translation because she had to mangle the prose into tiny bite-sized words for the most part all so that she could force the entire story into specific ten-syllable lines, because despite nobody else who's translated it ever feeling the need to, she decided she knew better than all of them and this was how it was always supposed to be translated.
Hence why we get such classics as her referring to Troy as a "town" instead of a city, which is grossly inaccurate but used solely because it's one less syllable.

>>221963452

>>
>>221963452
The Trojan War was fought over an insult, the land was already colonized by the Trojans. Odysseus and his men were mercenaries fighting for the Acheans, they didn't colonize Troy afterwards, they packed up and left for Greece.
The Odyssey is a story about them trying to get back home, not about them invading anyone. Nothing you posted refutes this, it's just a bunch of Ottoman seething from 200 years after the fact.

>she decided she knew better than all of them and this was how it was always supposed to be translated.
No, she decided to translate the work in a specific way that does justice to the original meter. Translation accuracy for poetry isn't a single variable even if we speak about it as though it is.

You should look at Alexander Pope's translation of the Iliad for a very different take on how to translate poetry. Instead of using the traditional dactylic hexameter, he uses heroic couplets from traditional English poetry. In a way, translating the meter itself into one more familiar for his audiences.

The best translation of Dostoevsky is the Jovan Maksimovic Serbian one (I can understand Russian and it nearly gets the entire meaning over from one language into another) and the most similar translations to those are of Constance Garnett. What Dostoevsky wrote and how he expressed himself (think of a hilarious overwrought anime that's also somehow the height of literature) has NOTHING to do with robotic PV translation. Garnett's translation of Turgenev is also great.

At least she has standards, she does have a PhD in classics and comparative literature and probably promoted that to her students after Nolan touted her translation as the main one he used, so even if she is trying to deconstruct it and be subversive it diverges so much from the story and meanings it is annoying if you like the actual Odyssey.
>>
Emily Wilson is part of a larger symptom of cliques (homosexuals, lesbians, various -ists) getting into academia, taking over departments, museums etc. Everything you see in the western world has long been hollowed out to produce a critique of everything normal and the one thing that will never be attacked is zionism.

I wrote about this before, but some 7-8 years ago or so I was in Vienna and visited their modern art museum to see some Picasso, Henry Moore etc. The show was 'reimagined' by a 'resident' tranny artist and that guy took various garish drapes and other pieces of clothing and threw it over sculptures and paintings and you know what was in the middle of the room? A television turned off to full blast playing his throaty moans while he expanded and contracted his anus which took the entire screen. On repeat all the time. The guard looked like he's on the verge of suicide.

Helen saying 'They made my face the cause that hounded them' does not indicate in any way that she feels shame or culpability or agency of any sort; it casts the blame on the Achaeans, and indicates that they used her as an excuse

This. There are many differences between Hesiod's Theogeny and Homer's stories, let alone the bard who told greek myth.

You think the Odyssey we have now is THE version that was agreed upon? That this was the only one ever told? Or was this one just the averaged out among the hundreds that we similar and close enough to each other but still had differences among them? When this version was written down and made its way from city to city in ancient greece, do you think there were some men who said "Psh, this isn't the real Odyssey, MY Odysseus brought Circe AND Calypso back and had a gang bang with them and Penelope. What is this woke TRASH!?"

You can be knowledgeable on a subject, want to reinterpret or reframe something but still be annoyed when someone just has an interpretation of the material that is so bastardized is no longer is that thing. I don't think you can really question that she knows about the Odyssey and maybe she is trying to reinterpret it through a more modern feminist lens, but there is still a point where Odysseus is no longer Odysseus and just some generic action man in armor with PTSD instead of the arrogant, deceptive, cunning war hero king he was because you think it plays better with a modern audience.

I see this misuse of [sic] all the motherfucking time in 'scholarly' papers; it is for reproducing errors as they occurred in the original quote, not for passive-aggressive disagreements about pronoun usage
I similarly rolled my eyes at his enthusiastic approval of "Demeter with the cornrows in her hair", which is a double anachronism — it's a 'cute' bit of wordplay, but that doesn't make it appropriate

...of *course* they had to mention the Holocaust

does indeed show fine sensibility

I think it is absolutely interesting to wonder if Odysseus felt any guilt about the way they killed the unarmed, sleeping, Trojan denizens and their infants in the sacking of the city.
We know Odysseus felt some Lone-Survivor guilt, this is heavily implied in the Odyssey. We also know he had some sort of sympathies and sorrow for the comrades he lost -- he is seen crying numerous times when the bard Demodocus is retelling the Trojan events.
And there are numerous times in the Odyssey when it seems like Odysseus could be heading home, but seemingly avoids doing so. Why did he stay at Circe's for a year? No one was holding him there, he could have left at any time. Perhaps he was avoiding his nostos.

One of the things we know is that Odysseus ONLY achieves his kleos, his glory, when he achieves his Nostos and his return home. And at his return home, he must reckon with himself.

I don't think that it's the wildest thing for Nolan to wonder: "Maybe he didn't want to reckon with himself. And this is what makes Odysseus acquiring his kleos through nostos so interesting."

>Another innovation of Wilson’s Odyssey is its handling of slavery. She asserts: ‘[t]he need to acknowledge the fact and the horror of slavery, and to mark the fact that the idealized society depicted in the [Odyssey] is one where slavery is shockingly taken for granted, seems to me to outweigh the need to specify, in every instance, the type of slave’ (pp. 88–89).20 Adopting a policy of what one might call ‘Pan-Slaveism’, Wilson translates as ‘slave' 7 (or ‘house girl / boy’) a whole range of distinct Greek words for non-elite serving men and women: ‘maidservant’ (ἀμφίπολος), ‘steward’ (οἰνόχοος), ‘old man’ (γέρων), ‘(old) woman’ (γρηύς / γύνη), ‘nurse’ (τροφός), ‘chambermaid’ (θαλαμηπόλος), ‘honourable / well-born men’ (ἀνέρες ἐσθλοί),21 ‘housekeeper’ (ταμίη),22 ‘shepherd’ (ποιμήν),23 and ‘guardian’ (ἐπίουρος).24 Wilson is simply wrong, though, when she uses ‘slave’ (as she often does) to render θεράπων (‘attendant’ or ‘squire’) and κήρυξ (‘herald’).25 But when her wrongheaded interpretation of the herald’s status might get her into difficulties, she simply abandons it, though her confusion is apparent from her uncertainty about terms. Thus, at Od. 2.38, when the herald Peisenor handles the sceptre at the Ithacan assembly, Wilson translates κήρυξ as ‘[t]he competent official’26 (presumably because a slave could hardly have participated in assembly proceedings). And she renders Od. 19.244–47: ‘[Odysseus] had a [κήρυξ] … Eurybates … / who had black skin … woolly hair’. Wilson (with good reason) takes Eurybates to be of African origin but translates κήρυξ here not as ‘slave’, as she does almost every-where else, but ‘valet’.

Lmao
