I just read The Hedge Knight. Quite good writing. The show is a bad adaptation. Egg is supposed to be quick and snarky, self-assured. Dunk is a bit simple in the show because they artlessly had him say his internal monologue out loud. There’s dialogue in here which didn’t make it into the show, bizarrely. It is much more atmospheric compared to the show and there’s not really any comedy, with the exception of the Fossoway apple puns. A skilful writer could have padded this out to six hour-long episodes without it seeming like filler. They could’ve made Tanselle a puppeteer, and cut the flashback, to actually show the joust.Also, some observations, Baelor said he would handle the Kingsguard because they can’t harm him. Lyonel asks if that’s chivalrous. He says “the gods will let us know”.Did Maeker intentionally kill Baelor? He doesn’t actually show any affection for him, and the characters all think he’s bitter being in his shadow. He wanted his sons to do well in the tourney as a point of pride. We know how that turned out. And Valarr got the easy pickings because he’s second in line. With that context, Baelor decides to side against his sons and steal the spotlight by riding in. Must have infuriated him. You could say that him letting Dunk train Egg doesn’t suggest a nature prone to fratricide, but he loves his children, and Egg squiring for Dunk is contrived and would never have happened anyways so it can be chalked up to plot convenience. Apparently in the show they did different versions of Maekar’s culpability when talking to Dunk at the end which suggests GRRM didn’t actually tell them the reality.
