>Goldstein and Daley said the script is in progress and shared that fans shouldn't expect to see any familiar faces from the franchise in their reboot. Past Star Trek films have either seen the cast of shows like The Original Series and The Next Generation return to reprise their roles, or have recast iconic characters with new actors, such as in J.J. Abrams' Kelvin timeline. However, what's most interesting is what the duo said about the film's setting. Goldstein revealed that the next Star Trek film will take place "further in the future than we've been before."

Wait a minute. So, the SNW crew have seen all different types of alien lifeforms, time travel, autonomous cyber beings, and nanobots; aliens that look like large reptiles, zombies, giant frogs and monkeys, yet seeing a dinosaur makes them gasp and smile in awe? Come on, son.

Most Star Trek alums vehemently loathe AI. And it’s not just about plagiarism. Look at all those episodes where they discover a planet of people so stupid they need a computer to think and provide for them. That’s gonna be us in less than a century.
>>
>>222051011
Yes, people believe that since Star Trek is "pro-technology" that it's also "pro-AI." But it isn't, really, and that episode you cited is just one of many depictions that warns of its dangers, painting it as a sort of pandora's box.

Trek tells stories of AI, it's wonders and it's dangers. It's Science-Fiction after all.
It's predictable new technology, we knew damn well we'd develop AI in the near future so we wrote stories about the possibilities.
Damning new tech is as pointless as it is retarded, same goes for expecting salvation from it.

Why is Goldstein still around post-Discovery/Academy/Picard/SNW? They can disregard the former shows all they want and take it into any new setting/era but when you have the same people at the helm making the same poor decisions then you'll just keep getting a repeat of the same disasters.

Knowing this industry, Kurtzman will fail upward. He won’t be asked back for more Star Trek because he’ll be promoted to some DC or LotR project. Paramount really wants the WB catalogue so they can give everything the Yellowstone treatment.
>>
>watched Battlestar Galactica 2004, Babylon 5, and now Farscape

Don’t get me wrong, trek is the basis and the starting point for sci fi writers and enjoyers but whatever you enjoy about trek another series probably has done better at one point or another

I was half thinking of giving one of these new shows a watch but I think getting off the train at VOY was a smart decision. I don't think today's directors can even get the lighting right, let alone do a complex sci-fi show.
>>
>>222058157
these modern shows are so expensive yet somehow look cheaper than the 90s ones
also the writers are gen X babbies so instead of being inspired by WW2 movies and old science fiction they're inspired by buffy and community
>>
Old Trek writers
>for this episode we were inspired by Sands of Iwo Jima. For this episode we were inspired by The Manchurian Candidate. For this episode we were inspired by A Bridge Too Far. For this episode we were inspired by The Hunt for Red October. For this episode we were inspired by Das Boot.

NuTrek writers
>for this episode we were inspired by the Buffy the Vampire Slayer's "Once More, With Feeling". For this episode we were inspired by the Community "Intro to Felt Surrogacy".

Digital cameras and LED lights have been a disaster for Star Trek. Every single hour of Nutrek is totally mogged by Yesterday’s Enterprise and DS9 mirror episodes.
>>
>>222058542
i really hope you meant producers because that's actually more accurate and any writer who's main inspiration is movies and not books is probably retarded.
>>
>>222058542
Yeah, it do be like that.
>>222058709
What? They were screenwriters and they studied screenwriting. Of course they knew about great scripts, and studied television and films with great scripts.
>>
>>222058896
who the fuck is "they" and who specifically are you talking about? TOS scripts were written by actual legit pulp sci fi writers. a lot of TNG scripts were submitted by literally whos and then worked into a script. when I read the DS9 book there was mostly the producers who were like "we were inspired by The Searchers" for this episode, not the writer saying stuff like that, if it was someone different. so what in the actual fuck are you talking about then?
>>
>>222058896
I don’t get how Frakes and Picardo can say SFA has great writing. They lived through all the golden ages of Hollywood. They must have seen thousands of movies and TV episodes. As will as plays and novels. They know what makes for a good script. Even an untrained eye can see SFA has bad writing and character arcs.
>>

>>
>>222058942
The producers were just a more senior set of writers. Even Berman was a writer, though a hack writer. Piller was absolutely a writer.
And by "they" I mean writers who are working in Hollywood in general and yes this goes back to TOS. Roddenberry himself, Gene Coon, not everybody on TOS was Harlan Ellison. A lot of them were working television writers with history writing westerns, cop dramas, screenplays for tv movies (called specials at the time), etc.
>>222058949
>I don't get how Frakes and Picardo can say SFA has great writing
They want to keep working.
>>
>>222059020

they're not senior in writing they're senior in showrunning and making TV, which does not make them smarter than an actual writer.

MY THEORY is that Jeff although being an actor is like one of those actor actors who actually is in it for the love of the craft or whatever which is why he does one-man stage plays no one sees and in his older years won't take any role that requires him to shave his mustache because he has nothing to prove and isn't desperate for money and clout
>>
>>222059141
Michael Piller had been working as a writer since 1983. Guys like Gene Coon and Roddenberry didn't become producers until later in their careers as writers when they had a bunch of credits under their belts.

There are almost always writers/creatives on the production staff. Anyway, I know you're that one faggot that just pedantically argues with everyone forever so you can just stop now because I ain't replying. You're wrong, multiple people are telling you you're wrong, get over it

Code of Honor is tedious and fucking retarded

>what if supposedly warp capable aliens who were a part of the intergalactic community held life-saving medicine in the balance based on other aliens participating in their retarded cultural bullshit?

the only thing I accept and I don't even care if it's true or headcannon is that some lady with a fetish wrote this script and no one gave a flying fuck so it actually got made into an episode
>>
>>222059479
Well, your assessment is pretty good actually. It does a decent job at all of those things -- but the fact that it has nothing else going for it is why the episode sucks. The story is not good or compelling in any possible way. There's none of the soul of Trek at its best there. Instead, it's more of a reflection of TOS S3's more aimless episodes where it's heavy on camp and pulp and light on actual credible content.

If you enjoy Star Trek at its most surface level -- all frosting, no cake -- sure, you'll probably like Code of Honor. But you probably like all sorts of shitty things.

I didn't want to post a new thread for a request, but here is a repost from wsr:

I am hunting for an old GIF, WEBM or other type of video based on what I believe was originally an animated GIF. It features footage from Star Trek (most likely one of the Next Generation films) of Jean-Luc Picard sitting at his desk with a computer display/monitor that rises from within the desk. It also features footage of John Locke from the TV series LOST. The fictional scenario is that Locke is trolling or catfishing Picard by pretending to be a sexy girl. Picard is interested, but ultimately Locke, laughing, reveals the deception. Picard says "UR a dude?" to which Locke responds "I put on my hat and wizard robe," after which Picard says "UR gay. Goodbye." The computer monitor sinks back into the desk and Picard sips on his tea. This used to be shared somewhat frequently, but has become difficult to track down. I recall it appearing as a video on YouTube or some other platform with a title similar to "Picard Gets Locked."

Aside from wanting the full GIF itself, I wanted to extract a section for a Locke reaction GIF. Everything is so hard to find these days. I searched my own storage, bookmarks, etc, and even resorted to using a few AI chatbots with zero luck. The Dead Internet Theory increasingly seems to be true. Hopefully someone has it saved. Thanks ahead of time.

Haven't watched STD but I would say both. There are some pretty good episodes. There are some really bad episodes. Mostly it's just a bunch of "reddit-tier writing" which is mediocre to bad, depending on your tolerance. Zero stakes episodes with women being slay-qweens and/or everything being a big fucking joke, that sort of thing.

I would unequivocally say there are at least 2 episodes per season worth watching (TNG-tier quality). More than that is really a matter of taste, tolerance, and how much time you have to waste. Watch it if you don't mind wholesale skipping entire episodes that annoy you or if you're doing something else and just need background noise.

This is not a crew task on starfleet vessels. The ships computer does all the logging, especially in the engineering department. All of Scotty's work here would be easily accessible with a few short verbal commands to the computer which could then describe them in detail.
Yet another example of a careless and flippant disregard for trek lore from the new custodians of trek.
