In terms of horror, does the Scream franchise bring anything new to the table except for "being meta"?

Great news, /hor/!!!
As part of its De Palma Summer program, Alamo is screening Phantom of the Paradise, Carrie, and Blow Out next month! If (You) like any of these, go get tickets before it's too late and you're forced to sit in the corner of the front/back row!

They are, for the most part, fast paced, entertaining whodunnit slashers. They brought plenty new to the table in the 90s if you compare it to the slashers released in the 90s before it and had great deal on all the slasher films that followed even outside of the 'meta' aspects - killers became faster, more personal in their brutality, and mystery was front and centre.

I was surprised at how good Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox looked given their age ... which I don't even know desu, but it must be above 50. Anyway, by know we know the formula and we know what to expect. A killer toys with his victims before he murders them. In the end it turns out that there were in fact 2 killers and they were close to the 1st victim and always "someone you don't expect to be a killer". I get that they want to introduce the franchise to new (young) viewers. But I having seen the 1st one admit I only saw the 7th one because I had nothing better to do that evening.

I got memed. Some of the worst acting, horrible writing and dialogues, boring as shit for the last 60 minutes, random meme scenes, goofy melodramatic music kicks in randomly at a few spots, filmschool tier blocking.
I really can't wrap my mind around how one could in a few years go from making a beautifully crafted film to this

not really. 3 sucks, 4 is better but is made almost a decade later, and the ones with mexican bitches are completely derivative. and the new one blows.

so no, the first two are the only good ones. now it's just for sluts who want to goon and think about being raped by guys in ghost face masks and they make no gripes making it obvious
>>
>>222131736
you sound autistic. it does a good job exploring the relationships between these people and that's foreshadowing for the guy to go looking at his buddy's apartment later because he's affected by the suicide. your only gripe is that the line delivery is awkward in a movie you likely needed captions to understand in the first place

but everyone is entitled to an opinion

3 wraps up Sidney's arc really well and has a few great scenes of suspense, but the movie has no bite and no violence. Columbine happened, so the studio retardedly forced Wes to show very little blood and to make a goofier movie in tone.

4 was a return to form. It has the most vicious kills of the franchise to this day and Ghostface's VA sounds even more twisted and menacing. It does feel like a retread, with Sidney getting chased yet again for the 4th fucking time, but the killer's motive was awesome in this one and the commentary on modern horror is fun.
>>
>>222133281
I've watched the she-demon sex shaman/mummy Szamanka that was alright. as well as 'The Most Important Thing Love' which, man if you thought Posession was pitched histrionic in places Love is that cranked to 11 for the whole runtime and will really make you question if this is actually an appealing trait. in the context of drugs crime and love of course. Tons of that handheld sweeping camera movement with some decent productions sets.

itt would most recommend period piece 'The Devil', just marvelous to behold from the opening scene

One thing I liked about the Scream movies I saw is that the killers usually are getting bodied half the time when they're trying to get a kill. Falling down the stairs, getting shit thrown at them and knocked over. It's not so much that they were shown to be human in that way it's that the people being killed were allowed to be human as they died. They weren't just retards screaming, they were fighting for their lives and you're given hope as an audience member that they might survive because that's only supposed to be reserved for the final girl. Of course, it stopped mattering when they made scream a franchise that had continuing main characters that couldn't be killed, but I think this really worked in Scream and to a lesser extent Scream 2.
