I wasn't comparing DS9 to Stargate Atlantis, I was comparing it to Stargate Universe, and how the fans rejected it for being too different from what they were used to. It's very weird to me that a substantial portion of Star Trek fans hated DS9, just as it's very weird to me Stargate fans hated SGU. Both were the "darker, sexier" versions of their franchise. But while enough Trekkies did support DS9, Stargate fans killed their franchise for good.I was never much of a Stargate fan myself. I liked SGA before the premise got ruined. I probably would've hated VOY if they got back to the Alpha Quadrant after a single season, too. But SGA was at least trying to be a bit more serious, not unlike TNG did for Star Trek.SGU actually did the serialized storytelling, with a focus on character drama, lasting consequences, and yes, a darker, sexier show instead of dumb campiness. Probably would have gotten itself ruined too, if it continued. But the fact that it at least tried to do something new, push the boundaries of what Stargate could be, that's something fans should have respected more. Just as Trekkies (now) respect DS9, even if many rejected it at the time.Too much is too much. We've seen how an effort to go too hard into serialization and soap opera style drama has ruined Star Trek. But there is a good balance and DS9 certainly found it.

Janeway was in a lot of ways a female Kirk, which doesn't mean she is literally Kirk with a vagina, but she took Kirk's mentality and channeled it through female energies, with a little sprinkle of Picard in there to adhere with 24th century SF Captain standards, by which I mean a departure from the "wild west" as she once described it; but due to Voyager's peculiar situation, it still gets very wild westy with Kirk-tier gambles and bravado. Also, while the role of ship's counselor was officially Neelix's, it more than often fell upon Janeway's shoulders to set some lost lambs back into place, which is why you seldom get "grandma" vibes from her, almost painting a matriarchal structure where Voyager's figuratively her family; though some of it is due to how Mulgrew plays her. Which is to say she is her own character and her gender definitely plays a role in it (a male Janeway may have had less insecurities to deal with throughout the show), but she's still carried a lot of baggage from Kirk of all captains. Speaking purely TOS here.
