>>222291363I had a dream of Vinnie Gallo. I was somehow friends with him and I was showing him /film/. He got into it and posted a message that said:AASome posters got confused at the cryptic message so he, out of spite, started blowing up the thread with plastic explosives he had lying around. With each BOOM a number of posts would get deleted. His HOA sent complaints that mining operations are prohibited in the neighbourhood.Eventually he got bored and asked us what do we want. Some anon said a proper full HD release of Buffalo '66. Since he didn't have access to the master footage, him and I went to meet Christina Ricci in a bar. She was a little hesitant about the idea so Vinnie and I broke into the film studio's headquarters. One of the offices there had obvious signs of belonging to my father, who doesn't work in that field at all, which confused me.Anyway it got boring after that. The end.

>>222291363Ladies and gents, I present to you 1957's NIGHT OF THE DEMON, directed by the magnificent Jacques Tourneur, the true master of the noir look....his films are some of the most incredible-looking Hollywood film noirs fo all time (he also directed "Out of the past".....'nuff said)It's about an American professor who travels to England and ends up entangled in an investigation to expose a supposed demonic cult, headed by a respected yet ambigous local figure, Dr. Julian Kaswell. It's a phenomenal film...I have to admit, I'll have to rewatch it sometime because I've only seen it once about two years ago, so a lot of the plot points evade my memory, but I can never forget the tense atmosphere, so greatly portrayed by the dark, eerie visuals, and the story which actually freaked me the hell out. Dr. Karswell's supposed ability to place a death curse on people and our main character's complete disbelief in his abilities are a superstitious man's (such as myself) nightmare, because the film is constantly dancing on the line between black magic being real and it all being a trick of the mind and someone's paranoia......So, a film from 1957 managed to scare me a lot more than 95% of modern horrors.....good job, Mr. Tourneur!Very, very highly reccommended if you're into horror films dealing with the occult and moody, eerie, noir-ish thrillers

>that Malick hate threadLmao. One big soul, baby.
>>222299342I heard you had whole ass protests about it cause they're basically stealing children under liberal pretenses. The trailer for Fjord reminded me of The Hunt. But realt, this social realism psychological thriller adjacent thing is just stale at this point. Mungiu peaked with his first feature Occident, which was a mix of zany comedy and social realism, quite original of an idea even now. But winning that first Palm for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days broke him, he decided that he will be purely a dark and depressing director now. I remember enjoying Beyond the Hills but never seen those two (well three now) films he made after cause I'm just done with this kind of cinema by now. Maybe Radu Jude is Reddit or whatever, but that is a much preferable direction for me. And if I were to watch a cold and sad social realist film from Romania there's Cristi Puiu. He at least sticks to his guns and makes behemoths that as a viewer you have to do some heavy lifting to get into, he doesn't compromise and tie his thing into a neatly linear genre-adjacent story. In Mungius case, now with big actors - Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. Both are capable of course, but he is really aiming for the stale and generic this time. I'm more interested to see Sebastian Stan in a movie of the already mentioned Radu Jude, he is planning a Frankenstein movie with him. I really hope it's not gonna be an AI slop augmented series of fridge magnet anecdotes tho, like Dracula was. What a misfire.

>>222311223Ceddo by Ousmane Sembene.
>>222310728>What did you find unwatchable?I guess I should qualify that statement a bit. Unwatchable given the amount of talent (in front of and behind the camera) that went into making it. Pretty much the whole Robert Mitchum section spoofing MGM is bad - Hollywood insiders making jokes for other insiders. The whole plot device of her therapist office visit seems more designed visually than anything to do with a coherent story element (surprising from Comden and Green, but then again they also wrote It's Always Fair Weather whose flaws are fundamentally story-related). Everything's so over the top, I'd like it a bit more if it wasn't. But Shirley is gorgeous and it's in color so I watch it (though I'm happy I found it for $1 since I bought it sight unseen). One of those great "what if?" movies, if it had been made with Marilyn Monroe as originally planned.

>>222312425>Everything's so over the top, I'd like it a bit more if it wasn'tAh. I kinda liked that about it, though I of course agree that some stuff simply didn't land as well as other stuff (I definitely agree about the therapist office). It's more or less the same deal for me with the Shirley thing (she was the primary draw for me and she didn't disappoint so all the flaws really paled in comparison to her), though I agree that the thought of it with Marilyn is cause for pause.
>>222302851Early Nolan is fine. I always liked Following a lot cause it's like a quintessential student film. There is something deeply cinematic about it and the way amateurishness fights with that great cinematic core is entertaining and endearing. Memento is just a solid thriller. And I have a soft spot for Prestige because the concept of a David Bowie Tesla randomly inventing a clone machine for some guy is a shred of nonsense weirdness and irrationality that Nolan subsequently lacked.

>>222312453>>222312557The legs that sent that little freak Alan Ladd flying.
>>222313228Yes, Shirley is great in it - it's a testament to her talent and screen presence that she more than holds her own against a very wide variety of leading men, and very successful leading men at that. This movie works as a Shirley-specific film for me much better than, say, Irma La Deuce does. Still, visually it's dazzling and that's still quite an accomplishment in a visual medium like film. So many modern films are just boring to look at, not because the flashy costumes and colors are missing but just basic visual storytelling seems to be a thing of the past.

Just watched a video about Mavropsaridis' editing and I've realized I don't really understand how people can tell between excellent and just good editing. "He refuses to cut", the video kept saying, but how do you know it was his artistic choice if you don't know how many different shots he had during editing? Maybe he holds that one shot because there was literally nothing else to cut to?

I really like Fritz Lang's pairings with Edward Robinson...Scarlet Street and The Woman in the Window both feel like unique noirs to me, they have this charm to them, a whimsicalness and they feel like their own little worlds unto themselvesAny 40s noirs that evoke a similar feeling? Something about the characters Robinson plays with Lang's direction...I wish I could articulate it. Joan Bennett is another common element, her chemistry with Robinson and the way she (deliberately or not) gets him into trouble in both films

Despite the obvious limitations of a supporting and ultimately rather stereotypical role—that of the "real working-class woman," whose guilelessness and plain speaking contrasted with the studious arrogance of her well-to-do Marxist-Leninist peers—Juliet Berto effortlessly stole the spotlight from Jean-Pierre Léaud and Anne Wiazemsky (both excellent in their own right). She did so by creating a memorable "fake dumb brunette" persona that, in just a few scenes, made her something of a French Judy Holliday [1]. Yves Simon spotted her talent and dedicated his finest song to her: *Au pays des merveilles de Juliet* (Juliet’s Wonderland). [Source: https://lmsi.net/Juliet-Berto]

>>222331992The Ramones are cool.
>>222332227Well it predates riot grrrl and is a direct influence on it's formation so it's actually a bit ahead of it's time if anything. I don't think anyone was trying to be new. It has what are effectively cameos from Paul Simonon and a few others.
>>222332255You're cool.
>>222331619Been meaning to watch this Lou Adlerkino for a hot minute. It's crazy to think Streets of Fire only came out two years later.

>>222327553Looks neat. Might check it out later.

>>222333569It was pretty intentional.
>>222333601So you were intending to communicate "these are both for children" and not something more flattering (and more about the viewers than the works)?
>>222333697If you think old Disney classics are diminishable only to "movies for children", then I have nothing to say to you.
