I just finished watching Gold Diggers of 1933. Ruby doesn't have as much screentime in it as, say, Footlight Parade, but she's quite fun to watch. Those are my top 2 WB pre-code musicals btw, followed by Dames and rather distantly bringing up the rear is 42nd Street (boy does Warner Baxter just drag that movie down for me).

Yet another cautionary tale about simping, but in a very heigthened way. It does fit in nicely with The Servant, which he would make next.

I wonder why John Waters calls it a "failed art film" though, sure i would call it a minor Losey, but don't see how it's "failed" as an "art film". Waters is probably the most prominent figure who praises Losey a lot publicly, and i appreciate that, but he seems to admire his films with great irony, especially Boom!, which he loves but also calls a "failed art film", and that bothers me a bit because it might lead some people to not look at Losey's filmography with any seriousness.

Also, i think i hate Billie Holiday.

>i hate Billie Holiday

>>222556259
I don't knoe if I can think of any BAD actors from the classic era that I really enjoy, but some actors, even some really big starts like Himphrey Bogart, really seemed to have their own "character" that they played over and over and didn't have too much versatility...

I also need to mention that Bogart is possibly my favorite actor of all time haha
I adore him and his work, he's just a charisma overload of a guy, every time he enters the stage suddenly everyone else is gone and he's the only one you can watch.

.....but he's also not a very versatile performer. Can you imagine Bogart playing a fragile and timid guy? And lots of actors and actresses from back then followed this M.O., they were more living film characters than traditional thespians.

John Wayne was always the big, masculine hero, Clark Gable was always the lover, Walter Brennan was always the slightly goofy southerner, Peter Lorre was always the sinister sleazeball...

Sure, there were exceptions to the rule, like when John Wayne played an anti-hero in Red River and things of that nature, but still, typecasting was a very popular choice back then but the actors who got typecast actually owned the repetitive roles and knew what to do with them.
>>

Looks a lot better than the films Stuges would go on to direct, but ultimately I don't find the pairing as convincing as Double Indemnity- MacMurray might be able to keep up a patter with Stanwyck but he's overmatched by her as an actor and Stanwyck is too old to play the ingenue role she's cast in here. This thread is fucking ass. When I make a post about classical films or cinema in general here it gets no replies. But when I post some light trolling here I receive a bunch of replies from imbeciles that can't identify baits. I'll just create a thread on TV from now on if I wanna talk about films, this is a shitposting general.
>>
Ragebait will always garner more replies than earnest posts, that's just the way it is. Someone who wants attention can just look at a list of acclaimed movies (that he probably even likes) and say all of them are shit and he will get far more engagement than if he wrote an effortpost talking about why he likes them.

Very good, I wish more films were more shamelessly emotional like this, wear it on your sleeve. /sensitive/

You need to leave. /film/ is not tolerant of intolerance. If "woke" subjects upset you, you're too immature to grasp arthouse & classics.
but I hope you're baiting and not earnestposting

You don't get to arbitrarily decide what /film/ is tolerant of and who is mature enough for what, faggot.

You're part of the problem then if you're posting any bait at all.

Investigative journalism has got to be my least favorite subgenre because no matter how the movie's presented it always comes across as dull and uninspired to me. All the president's men, the insider, the post, zodiac, spotlight, etc, watched all of these and none of them left a strong impression on me.

Hilariously enough, Paul Morrissey counts as one.

His issue with it seems to be that it's somehow bad to create fiction out of a real tragedy? Like, what? That doesn't even make any sense, the dude isn't even criticizing the film itself, just the fact that making fiction out of the holocaust should be considered taboo. It shouldn't, art doesn't give a shit about your feelings.
>>
He didn't say fiction, he said suspense.

Referring to the scene with the showerheads, to be exact. Which is indeed putrid.

>>222592088

Videogames aren't art, they're entertainment and there's nothing wrong with that. A game that knows its place which is to generate countless hours of fun like Factorio personifies the essence of gaming much better than games like The Last of Us that try to be art but end up being nothing more than an interactive B-tier movie.
>>
>>222592522
Pokémon (pre gen 6), Final Fantasy (pre FF11), Shin Megami Tensei, Contra, Crash Bandicoot and Castlevania are better than 99% of arthouse cinema, and more artistic than it.

Yesterday I watched this movie

>On March 1, Kubrick and I, at his Universal City studio, debated in an amiable battle of suggestion and countersuggestion how to cinemize the novel. He accepted all my vital points, I accepted some of his less significant ones. On March 9, Kubrick had us meet Tuesday Weld (a graceful ingénue but not my idea of Lolita).
Nabokov, Vladimir, “Lolita: A Screenplay (Vintage International)”

would Tuesday have been a good Lolita?

>‘My final meeting with Kubrick must have taken place on September 25, 1960, at his house in Beverly Hills: he showed me that day photographs of Sue Lyon, a demure nymphet of fourteen or so, who, said Kubrick, could be easily made to look younger and grubbier for the part of Lolita for which he already had signed her up. ’

I really didn't, so much of it was a display of "look how arthouse we are! please!" that didn't add anything to the story or the aesthetics.
