>>222556259I just finished watching Gold Diggers of 1933. Ruby doesn't have as much screentime in it as, say, Footlight Parade, but she's quite fun to watch. Those are my top 2 WB pre-code musicals btw, followed by Dames and rather distantly bringing up the rear is 42nd Street (boy does Warner Baxter just drag that movie down for me).
>>222559052I know it's not Warner but have you seen pic related?

Yet another cautionary tale about simping, but in a very heigthened way. It does fit in nicely with The Servant, which he would make next. I wonder why John Waters calls it a "failed art film" though, sure i would call it a minor Losey, but don't see how it's "failed" as an "art film". Waters is probably the most prominent figure who praises Losey a lot publicly, and i appreciate that, but he seems to admire his films with great irony, especially Boom!, which he loves but also calls a "failed art film", and that bothers me a bit because it might lead some people to not look at Losey's filmography with any seriousness. Also, i think i hate Billie Holiday.
The people love /ourgirl/
>>222560920>i hate Billie HolidayWhy?
>>222556259I don't knoe if I can think of any BAD actors from the classic era that I really enjoy, but some actors, even some really big starts like Himphrey Bogart, really seemed to have their own "character" that they played over and over and didn't have too much versatility...I also need to mention that Bogart is possibly my favorite actor of all time hahaI adore him and his work, he's just a charisma overload of a guy, every time he enters the stage suddenly everyone else is gone and he's the only one you can watch......but he's also not a very versatile performer. Can you imagine Bogart playing a fragile and timid guy? And lots of actors and actresses from back then followed this M.O., they were more living film characters than traditional thespians.John Wayne was always the big, masculine hero, Clark Gable was always the lover, Walter Brennan was always the slightly goofy southerner, Peter Lorre was always the sinister sleazeball...Sure, there were exceptions to the rule, like when John Wayne played an anti-hero in Red River and things of that nature, but still, typecasting was a very popular choice back then but the actors who got typecast actually owned the repetitive roles and knew what to do with them.
I remember a couple years ago an anon was talking about long arthouse films that are basically every genre, do you guys know any films like that?

>On March 1, Kubrick and I, at his Universal City studio, debated in an amiable battle of suggestion and countersuggestion how to cinemize the novel. He accepted all my vital points, I accepted some of his less significant ones. On March 9, Kubrick had us meet Tuesday Weld (a graceful ingénue but not my idea of Lolita). Nabokov, Vladimir, “Lolita: A Screenplay (Vintage International)”would Tuesday have been a good Lolita?
sigh…
Birkinfag, did you find that French-Italian comedy that you were looking for?
>>222592995>a good LolitaUm her name is Dolores...
Hello friends Which should I watch tonight:El verdugo 1963Manji 1964Witchfinder General 1968Shadows of forgotten ancestors 1965Norte the end of history 2013
>>222593069that's her dotted-line name>‘My final meeting with Kubrick must have taken place on September 25, 1960, at his house in Beverly Hills: he showed me that day photographs of Sue Lyon, a demure nymphet of fourteen or so, who, said Kubrick, could be easily made to look younger and grubbier for the part of Lolita for which he already had signed her up. ’—Nabokov, Vladimir, “Lolita: A Screenplay (Vintage International)”
How do I cope with the fact that despite getting into arthouse films I still like fantasy, capeshit, comedies, etc? Should I just accept that I'm stupid and will never be a true film connoisseur?
>>222593076>Norte the end of history 2013It's a great Sunday film. And the same applies to all of Lav's work.

Did you enjoy The Chronology of Water?I really didn't, so much of it was a display of "look how arthouse we are! please!" that didn't add anything to the story or the aesthetics.
>>222592995Seeing as how Tuesday is much better than Sue Lyon in every conceivable way, i'd say yes, she would've been a good Lolita.
>>222593400>directs and writes>doesn't do the score or have the leading role Gallo she ain't.

Can someone explain to me from a technical level why train dreams is such a good looking movie. Because almost every scene in that movie looks greatIs it just excellent shot composition and shooting during the golden hour. They also seem to shoot against the sun a lot
