Felicia pointed out in a commentary that this guy doesn't die, he just gets burned by scalding water. He's yelling as they take him out on the stretcher, but doesn't them who did it for some reason. A Dark Song will always be a pretentious pile of fucking vomit for database faggots to feel good about their knowledge of muh occult practices. That's it. The end of the movie is the best part for the big guy and the fact that it's finally fucking over. Not scary. Waste of time. Fake ass faggot recommendations

>>222588163
It's been done a hundred times before. It's basically Ten Little Indians in a Thai cave. In the first 5 minutes you'll figure out on your own who will die first and who will be the final girl. The jumping shark is idiotic, as is how it gets itself killed.

I reviewed it here and gave it a 5/10. Technically well made, but conceptually nothing new. It is entertaining on a lazy sunday afternoon if you've got nothing else to do.
>>
>>222588510
the ironing. I explain why it's pretentious, the antithesis of a "lazy dismissal" which you yourself are guilty of. Sorry you have shit taste.
>>
>>222588339
I've never had more than a passing interest in the occult and esoteric religious stuff, I liked the movie because the characters are interesting. Initially you think okay it's these two characters in one location for the whole movie, that sounds boring. But their exact motivations are purposefully obscured, and you question whether their intentions are as they say they are or if there's something sinister to the whole affair, outside of the occult practices. The movie plays on this audience perception in a satisfying way I feel; the acting/dialogue writing is pretty solid, really sells the uncertainty and desperation of their respective situations. Then the climax of the movie is kino as you said. So while I feel it's one of those 'not for everyone' movies because it moves slowly and is heavily reliant on simple scenes of character interaction for most of the movie, I do think it stands out and is worth a look. I put it off for a while thinking it would require a lot of patience to enjoy but I found that to not be the case at all.
>>

I saw it years ago and wasn't impressed. I feel your pain for being scammed.

Been trying to get into horror movies, since I love horror books. Here's what I've watched recently, and my ratings with a few thoughts:
>Hokum: 4/10, just didn't enjoy it. Boring mostly.
>Scream: 6/10, hated the twist. The fact that it wasn't a fair-play mystery ruined it. Would've been much better if that didn't ruin the end of the movie significantly.
>Halloween: 5/10, generic and fine but undercut by tonality issues like the asylum versus town.
>The Cabin in the Woods: 7/10, enjoyed quite a bit but the zombies were lame. Plenty of better options for their chosen killer. The controller aspect was really good though, and I really liked the contrast.
>Hellraiser: 3/10, just very boring with gaping plot holes. Apparently the novella is significantly better.
>The Backrooms: 8/10, very good movie overall, but the therapy/trauma plots were bad, and the ending way too much. Should've kept it simple and avoided generic human emotional drama.

Any recommendations? I've seen a few other famous ones long ago, what I recall are: Nightmare on Elm Street (can barely remember), Alien (thought was good but more action than horror), The Shining (as a book fag I hated this one), and The Silence of the Lambs (liked, but Hopkins carried the everliving Hell out of it).

When it comes to books I like a whole lot of horror. Off Season, the sequel, Dracula (my favorite), The Long Walk, The Taking, The Shining, and a whole lot of short stories are my top ones.

I don't agree with your points, but who does? Watch the original movies you talked about, NOT the reboots with the same title. Some older movies are still classics after 50 year or more, like the original "Alien" 1979. Some older films are pretty tame by today's standards. Not all horror movies need a bigger budget to be good/interesting. For example I liked "Lee Cronin's Mummy", even though you know they didn't have much of a budget.
>>
>>222591269
None of the ones I watched were reboots. I don't even know which ones have reboots.
>>
>>222591322
I think "Scream" and "Halloween" came out not with their sequel number like "Scream 7", but with just the title "Scream".

Anyway, there's lots of horror subgenres. There's the slasher/splatter films that are just interested in a body count and ample use of artificial blood. There's gore and sexploitation horror. There's cheap cash grab horror like Backrooms. I like the ones that have a plot and that build up an eerie or scary atmosphere, like "Crimson Peak" or "The Awakening".
>>
>>222591447
>ample use of artificial blood
i really love when someone's on blood hose duty just pumping that shit full blast

>>222591447
Bro I don't know what the fuck you're talking about with sequels take your meds. The Scream I watched was from the 90s and the Halloween from the late 70s or early 80s.
>>
>>222591510
Didn't they break a record for that on "Evil Dead" 2013? Again, re-used title, not the original 1981 movie.

I was enjoying it but the motivation being vital and impossible to find out was dumb. Also the other guy's motivation being a cult of two/peer pressure was lame. Maybe if there was more buildup to it.
I'd actually thought it was just the peer pressure guy's doing the whole time, except for the one murder in the garage being the journalist who was doing it to make a good story.

Same as the Jews, thus? They didn't have family names until they got civil rights in the 1870s. At that time they could no longer go on being named "Noah, son of Benjamin, son of Shmuel, son of ..." In contrast to other Europeans they didn't get names assigned to them by neighbours and friends (like "Black" - the guy with the black hair or "Smith" - the village blacksmith). They got to pick their own family names and made up "nice sounding" names: Rosenthal ("valley of roses"), Goldberg ("mountain of gold"), Rubinstein ("ruby gem") etc.

Like I guess the whole point is "haha they're degenerate fascists so they're making these poor people do gross things just because they can" but that's such a weird point to try and make. People live in democracies and eat poo willingly, what does that say about them? Fascism doesn't inherently make people want to make others eat poo.

de Sade wrote the book while he was imprisoned for obscenity and sodomy, and his whole idea behind it was to write the most depraved thing he could come up with. He never finished it and the film left out plenty. So posters saying it was included because of the director's fetishes are probably correct.

120 Days of Sodom, both the book and film, are only notable because of the lore around it and the fact they were trying to be disgusting and perverted. They are uninspired and uncreative. There's not much there.
>>
>>222597431

The book is nowhere near as boring as the movie, but it's just smut. I definitely wouldn't recommend reading it. If you enjoy depictions of sadistic and disgusting behavior there are much better options available in the splatterpunk and extreme horror genres.

Of the stock Universal monster types, I think werewolves are my least favorite. I remember liking The Wolf Man a lot as a kid, but I haven't had much enjoyment matching various werewolf movies while I liked various iterations of the others from various studios. Is this normal?

Dual personalities, or at least that's always how I reasoned it.

>>222584302
Lucy Lawless had kind of a funny line during an interview, it must have been around the point of Ash vs Evil Dead. I don't remember it exactly, but it was something to the effect of:

>"I remember watching Evil Dead all those years ago and thinking that the people who made it had to be psychopaths...then I married one of them."
>>
>>222584162
The She-Bitch was played by my beloved Patricia Tallman, aka Barbara in Night of the Living Dead '90.
>>
>>222599000
I think it's less a problem with werewolves and more a problem that the films have never quite hit the mark. There's always something fucky with them, and I could probably say that with some weighting the original Wolf Man is actually the best.

Agreed. I never understood why it's constantly recommended as a "beginner" arthouse film when it would be much more effective watching it later on after getting enough context on Fellini + seeing enough films it heavily inspired to the point of homage.

>Alien (thought was good but more action than horror)
You're thinking of Aliens, the sequel. There's zero action scenes in the original Alien unless you want to count Ash manhandling Ripley as action. I still don't agree with that assessment of Aliens desu. Most of the action scenes involve a small group of people dying horribly to a horde of terrifying monsters. It's all suspenseful but in the scary way. I would describe the turret scene in the extended cut as exactly that.

Hayden Pennettierie looked late 40s in Scream. I thought her character was supposed to be some divorced 60 year detective. And I say late 40s only because I know she isn’t over 50 irl. I thought she could be anywhere in the 40s. She looked terrible.

Just finished. A single dad inadvertently agrees to become the grim reaper. This is mostly a sad drama and could've just as easily been about a guy with a drug problem or something. It's him trying to avoid cops and child protective services and earn money, etc. Not bad but I can't imagine most /hor/ posters liking it. From the title and poster (Ba is Chinese I think for Dad) I thought it was going to be a foreign movie but it's from L.A. Brian Thompson has a good small role and dude is looking old.

>>222607580
I don’t want things that advertise a daughter as a main character. Always bogged down by mary sue-ism or drama. A son is better but I would rather not. The only way to show a “tough daughter” on screen is to make her act like a boy and it is just so dumb. I saw the Furious, a Hong Kong movie, and the daughter was just annoying. Acting all boyish and rebellious like a boy.
Reminds of that horror movie about spiders where the main little girl character was just playing a boy.
