There was never going to be a Targaryen restoration, ASOIAF has always been about the StarksMost of us were surprised to see Bran crowned, me included, but it makes a lot of sense if you keep in mind that this story has always been about the Stark children suffering but then rising.Just look at the first book. 6 out of 8 POVs are Starks (you could say Jon is a Targaryen but at this point nobody has any idea about it). That's 75% of POVs. They are the obvious protagonists.Look at the original title for 'A dream of spring' - 'The time for wolves'. Pretty self-explanatory. Sounds like the last book was always going to be about the rise of the wolves/Starks.But somewhere along the way we lost sight of it and a significant portion of the fandom was convinced that the story was going to end with Targaryen restoration under the rule of the 'rightful' monarch. Maybe because dragons are cool and the show was really putting an emphasis on how cool they are...In his famous interview about 'Aragorn's tax policy', GRRM argues that a good person does not a good king make. That it isn't enough to put the 'right' person on the throne for the kingdom to live happily ever after. Dany struggling to rule Meereen is already an illustration of that. Ned failing to navigate the politics of King's Landing is already an illustration of that. So for the answer to the question 'Who will rule the kingdom in the end?' to be Jon or Dany would be anticlimactic and against this line of thought.What does the Starks winning offer as an answer to that question that the Targaryens winning does not? God King Bran. The idea that maybe no human is fit to be the sole ruler over other people but someone not-quite-human might. That to be fit to rule you have to sacrifice a lot of your own humanity. Something like that. It fits the idea of a bittersweet ending and is more interesting than the rightful dragon-riding king/queen gaining their kingdom back.
