I'm just curious how the BTS on the Muppet episode worked since Muppet stuff requires an extremely raised floor with cutouts and I can't imagine they'd mod the SNW ones for one 'sode.

I kinda like Lower Decks. The humor is so-so, it's very similar to Rick & Morty in a lot of ways, and there's a ton of fanservice but it's nice to see some trek content that feels like it's made by actual trekkies, even if it's just comedic.Contrast that with most other nutrek which seems like it was made by people who either don't care about the history of the franchise or hate it.
>>222693263>face tattooIt's actually normally an additional set of genitalia.
>>222693267The sad part is that it wasn't even fuckawful except for that shitty humorBut I won't miss this shit at all once it's gone
>>222693162Short version is, they used shot framing whenever possible, but when they couldn't the puppeteers were kitted out in full greenscreen gear and digitally edited out
>>222693177I wonder what the significance of tatoos would be in the 23rd century when you can do everything else with the body painlessly and in seconds. You could get rid of it by waving a light over it. And probably create it just as easily. There are probably easier methods to paint your skin.

>>222693352This. Not every episode is that good but it seems to come from a team that cares about Trek and isn't trying to shape it into something it never was.
>>222693352>feels like it's made by actual trekkiesMore like made by people who browsed Memory Alpha. This show is the reason all Star Trek is comedyslop now and the fanbase is overrun by trannies. >>222693390>isn't trying to shape it into something it never wasExcept turning it into a retarded adult cartoon for trannies
>>222693393>if the point of the show is "Star Trek is retarded and lame"?I don't think it is though. To be fair sometimes Star Trek is retarded and lame, and I enjoy laughing about those aspects of it the same as many other fans do, but it's not because I hate the franchise overall; quite the opposite. For example the infamous hopscotch episode of DS9 is made fun of in Lower Decks and it's fine, even a little bit chuckle-worthy.

I think they only use these retarded gimicks to bait people into watching the show. like "huh? The captain's a MUPPET now? dohoho, gotta check this out." Only to influence the viewership numbers. Because, why try to write a REAL story if it's all about hits and social media engagement?

Maybe they should stop intentionally trying to alienate and piss off the audience they already have to try to appeal to an audience that doesn't exist and never will.
>>222693526You've got me totally wrong. Obviously a comedy show is going to be a bit irreverent, but that doesn't mean that I hate the really good stuff in Star Trek, or the comedy. Some people actually do hate the gangster planet episode of TOS but I'll passionately defend it. Objectively I can admit that the concept is extremely silly and totally unrealistic and whatever other criticisms people have of it, but I can easily suspend my disbelief enough that I really enjoy it.

The lone thing I don't understand is why they went with the it was all a dream copout at the end - there was no need because the premise is no more unlikely than other things they've previously done, and more importantly because the season finale is also a dream episode
>>222693469>READY TO HIT THE PROMENADEIn a "Berlin Christmas market" sense?
>>222693646I mostly hate the gangster planet but mostly because at that point every other fucking episode was another 'not Earth but actually just Earth' history lesson visit and it was getting pretty tiresome.

>>222693652You're right. Just go to trekbbs, star trek reddit, jammer's reviews, there are the oldschool trek fans who have to watch everything and they keep watching. So, I've read quite a few comments about the ep, and frequently you can read that people found it funny, were laughing and were entertained. And I'm shocked to hear this. How old do you have to be to find this episode funny? 8? Once you have seen the muppets the episode is basically over. It doesn't get any funnier. Oh look, the puppets stand on top of each other and wear a cloak, HAHAHA. Look, they try to punch the pirates but they only have to push the puppets away, WAHAHAHA. Whoa, Spock throws the Pike-puppet at the pirate captain, ROFLCOPTA. If this was a 5 minute special for comic con, okay. 1 hour episode, no.
>>222693782It's called "Tomorrow's Enterprise"It's a flash forward to Kirk's Enterprise that they made because at the time season five wasn't greenlit, they made it to function as a stealth series finale

>>222693798>there are the oldschool trek fans who have to watch everything and they keep watchingOldschool fans are dying out and many of them dropped Star Trek ages ago. Millennial consumers are NuTrek's main demographic. They don't really care as long as they get new merch to collect. To them the idea of being a Star Trek fan is more important than actually getting good Star Trek to watch. The actual content is secondary to performing the "Trekkie" identity. It's what all fandoms and franchises turn into eventually. It's a mutated consumerist cult that stopped being about Star Trek a long time ago.

>A noted critic of the writing and characterizations on the show, Beltran had several gripes about the final episode. He complained that the episode was written with a lack of care, too quickly wrapping up some well-established story arcs. Additionally, Beltran theorized that the episode was written out of frustration over Voyager's audience ratings, stating about the writers, "They took it out on us by saying, 'This show's no good. Let's get it over with as quickly as possible so we can fix it for the next one.'" Beltran also rhetorically asked about the installment, "This is what we're going out with?" and claimed the episode made him feel vindicated about his belief that the writers were "idiots," saying it was unfortunate that the fans were "going to have to sit through it."

>>222694771I was talking about Chakotay, but if you want to extend it out to the entire show that still applies, Prodigy wasn't written by a bunch of burnt out husks with absolutely nothing left in their creative tanks, who abandoned their core premises barely a season in to deliver a show that felt like production line of scripts fished out of dumpster behind the TNG office
>>222694878Every day is neck day
>>222694927Yes, it was a mistake for them to abandon the original premise but that's a decision from the top down. Blame Brannon Braga, Jeri Taylor, Rick Berman, and Michael Piller for that. The writers did a bang up job writing episodic Star Trek as they'd done on TNG and other shows and the writing of VOY, in terms of its episodic quality, is not far behind TNG.Both of these things can be true.Would the show have been better if it had been serialized and Voyager was shown to have running damage, etc? Absolutely. But it is still a very very good core Berman Trek show which makes it so high above Prodigy or any NuTrek slop that it's like comparing Michaelangelo's David to clay sculpture by a first grader.
>>222694927>they had nothing left in their creative tanks>he says this replying to a post which lists top tier Trek episodes in Voy as if they never happenedinteresting
>>222694949I've added neck harness work to the end of every workout and while it hasn't made me cardassian yet, it's been great for my posture
>>222694961I think Michael Piller did try to stick to the premise in the first two seasons. Lots of episodes where they have to search for supplies, fight off Kazon/Vidiian attacks, crew members are killed and Janeway is at odds with her officers, and so onOnce he leaves at the end of S2 and Jeri Taylor solos the show for a while, is truly when it becomes "diet TNG". Which necessitated the big shake-up in S4.
Voyager isn't bad because it abandoned its original premise. You've got it all wrong. It's that Voyager would've been the greatest Trek show of all time had it stuck to that premise. But even without it, it is still very good and very consistent, and probably has less "bad episodes" than TNG overall. VOY has a lot of episodes which are above average and the median quality level is very solid, particularly after S3.

>>222694643Janeway clearly hated Carrie, otherwise she would have arrived before this ep.
Voyager's cast is terrible, and it might have been redeemed if they stuck with the original premise but only because that would mean characters would have to change along with their conditions, but even that wouldn't be a guarantee
>>222695365Voyagers cast is too bland. I wouldn't go as far to say terrible, but dull.
>>222695365>>222695405A lot of this is because they gutted the premise. Think of how dynamic those characters would've been had they retained their Maquis loyalties or if those events actually had long-term consequences. A lot of the "dullness" of the cast comes because, in some cases like Torres and Chakotay, 50% of their character has been killed from the start.

The ratios of goofball/gimmick/comedy episodes are just way off.In TNG it's maybe 4 episodes out of 26 that are of that type. In DS9, you add Quark so you maybe expand that to 6 out of 26. Still an extremely low % compared to SNW which is like 7 out of 10 episodes are gimmick episodes. You have to earn your light-hearted episodes by creating the contrast. Serious Star Trek needs to be your foundation, the point of comparison that makes your goofier/gimmick episodes work in the first place. It's just like chemistry or cooking. >>222696505And the DS9 producers and writers decided not to do their original 30th anniversary episode which would've been a sequel to A Piece of the Action in which the planet's inhabitants start cosplaying as Starfleet officers and arguing about canon, because they felt it would be insulting to the fans.
>>222696649Every episode of Voyager is trash and you are trash for thinking Temu TNG is anything other than trash. Eat shit.
>>222696655think about it>1996>we don't want to insult the fans, they're the ones who support us>2026>fuck yeah insult the fans right to their faces, they'll eat this shit up regardless
>>222696639SNW season 4 is the gimmick season. Not that big of a deal, I personally like the episodes and think they're well made.Different seasons of different series have always had different vibes, SNW didn't start out this way but evolved in this direction as these episodes were the most talked about and memorable of the previous ones when they were rarer.Get over yourself, final six-episode season is rumored to be more traditional again or just watch some classic trek or even prevvious seasons of SNW if the puppet episode gets your jimmies this rustled.
>>222696699You're becoming agitated.
Most of classic trek was made with a limited budget. They had to pick which scenes from script they could film, allocate the effects budget, think about what could be filmed on location and then edit it to fit 45 minutes. All while the next ep had to cranked out next week. In nutrek they are scraping the bottom of the barrel to come up with scenes to fill the screentime after planning the ep for a year, fill the rest with unnecessary effects shots. Hmm, can we waste more budget with an unnecessary gimmick that necissitates completely new costumes or a puppeteer squad, and it still is shit.
>>222696753Maybe he'll stroke out. Keep it up, lads.
>>222696655Trials and Tribblelations is great too. What a bullet dodge
>>222696699They're getting so bad that I'm just skipping big parts of them, and I even managed to get through STD without doing this
>>222696699Only SNW season 1 is majority Trek. Every other season has a bunch of gimmick or comedy episodes or episodes where people talk like they're in an episode of Buffy. You can't say it's S4 only. What about that Patton Oswald Vulcan episode? Fucking retarded. Or the musical episode? Or the episode where they parody TOS and shit on Shatner and Roddenberry?Fuck off, man. SNW is anti-Trek garbage just like the rest.
>>222696659Truly an in-depth analysis. Explain to me why Blink of an Eye is a bad episode of Star Trek point by point, otherwise I'm just going to think you've never seen it.
>>222696699I think that's my issue with the show really. I don't dislike it but I just preferred what it was in seasons 1-2 rather than how they've since made playing with gimmicks most of it's entire identity. Season 3 was fairly weak overall but the two episodes I liked from it the most weren't gimmick episodes. This season has two non-gimmick episodes left and no guarantee that they'll be winners.
>>222697021Variations on Brigadoon with time fuckery are tired. Meridian was better. The Orville one was better. Simple as. Get fucked.
>>222695335Humor
>>222693267Why does the captain have a frosted bull-dyke haircut?
Webm-Anon, if you are here: It's great that you are here. Love your contribution to /trek/
>>222697072It's not like Brigadoon at all, or Meridian, or the episode of The Orville you're talking about.Nice attempted AI analysis though, kek. Point-by-point or you didn't watch it, donkeylips.
>>222693387Everything he's made is shit. But he's been employed for nearly 20 years. How does that happen?
>>222697154Also the Korean astronaut guy shouldnt have had his access codes work. Too much subjective time should have passed. Anyway, Voyager is trash for midwits, enjoy your shiny objects retard.
You can't spell this character's name without looking it up.
are the star trek writers quiet quitting? What's going on? I've never seen so much contempt for the source material. These people have never read any science fiction in their lives.
>>222697209Oh my god! A potential semantic flaw which does not in any way impact what the story is about! This really riles up my autism! You're right, this episode is dogshit trash and I am retarded like you. Now, compare it to fucking Brigadoon again, grok. But more correct this time, less errors.
>>222697270Yeah this episode is literally "it was all a dream" without even a single attempted science fiction element involved.Just lazy really. They could've made it sci-fi related so easily.
>>222697270The show is cancelled and Secret Hideout's trek gig is ending, so they have no stakes. These guys and the 47 executive producers per show work for Kurtzman's company. They'll sure get another contract to ruin another franchise, nobody cares about your actual track record as a writer or producer.
>>222697274Fucking with time skips is basically Brigadoon from the perspective of the Brigadoonians >you can't name some random gook characters name!!!Didn't like him in lost didn't like him in voyager. I don't devote brain space to bad acting. which is all of voyager. DS9 was peak acting.
What RLM video do they talk about Gary Seven in? I just watched that TOS episode so I wanted to find it again.
>>222697333Yeah the reason these writers are doing an anthology genre-hopping season is really simple if you think about itThey're advertising their ability to write other types of media, basically as a talent reel for themselves.>look, I can write noir!>I can write horror movie scripts! Hire me please!>Check out my comedy chops! I wrote this heckin' wholesome chungus muppet 'sode! It's pretty disgusting surface level Hollywood bullshit and anyone who likes it is quite literally subhuman
>>222697098His hair keeps getting more ridiculous each year
>>222697371DS9 does have a better core of actors, no doubt about it. But VOY has Picardo and Jeri Ryan both doing a lot of heavy lifting and Mulgrew is very consistent and is honestly a better actor than Avery Brooks as much as I love his autism.I rate DS9 above VOY but VOY is not as far behind as people think. There is a reason it is the most streamed Trek show, or at least was back when we still had those metrics (when Trek was on Netflix), yes even above TNG.
>>222694364resistance is futile ;-*
Started Voyager... didn't this guy (Harry Kim) get killed in S7 of DS9 by the guy with the transporter gun?
>>222697603It's a running gag, he gets killed every episode.
>>222697603He gets killed for real actually.
>>222697833more than once
Encounter a savage race of Mad Max aliens living on a desert planet with barely any technology or water.Suddenly by the end of episode they appear in space in their own star ships and start attacking Voyager, they even have a giant galaxy class destroyer.da fuq?

>>222698057the Kazon are the worst thing about Voyager. Second place is the Borg Queen.
>>222698057>>222698240The writers were trying to make the Kazon like LA gangs of the 80s and 90s, but they did it badly.
>arrive as refugee, looking for 'muh promised land'>yeah, no where nearby is suitable, so here's a lush planet for you that is uninhabited and will be more than enough for your 3m pop to thrive and become a regional space-power within the next few decades, as well as being under Starfleet's Protection>'erm, actually we want to settle in Bajor, because I said so :)' >yeah no, Bajor is full and cannot deal with having a population of 3 million arriving, plus we've just started recovering from a coup as well as the previous occupation, we need to sort our shit out and cannot deal with your shit if things go south, and this is pretty much unanimous between the Bajoran people and Starfleet.>'FUCK YOU KIRA YOU BITCH, YOU'RE NOT MY FRIEND ANYMORE, HOW DARE YOU NOT LET US CAUSE POTENTIAL INTER-ETHNIC CONFLICT ON YOUR PLANET, I GUESS '''BAJOR''' WILL HAVE TO DO WITHOUT OUR FARMING NOW THEN WON'T IT YOU FUCKING CUNT'>son dies because he's a retardno seriously, what the actual fuck was her problem?

>>222698467really activates your almonds doesn't it
One of the best episodes I've ever glimpsed and will glimpse, not just in the hereafter but in the soon after too.
>>222698400This episode, the VOY episode where Seven accuses the guy of rape mistakenly and gets him killed, and the maybe space minorities commit more crimes episode of VOY are the holy trinity of chud sodes.
>>222698400Its amazing how even the liberal writers of the 90s understood the dangers of unchecked immigration. If they made this episode today it would be the start of a Bajoran Nazi arc.
>>222698570they had 0 reason to demand to be settled on Bajor when a WHOLE PLANET was available for them to colonise.don't really care if it makes me /pol/ but they just come across as arrogant and retarded, and I didn't really get why Kira or anyone else would feel bad for them once they started acting like brats and demanded 'muh bajor'If the writers were trying to makes us sympathise then it didn't really work very well imo
>>222698658>If the writers were trying to makes us sympathise then it didn't really work very well imoThey clearly weren't. They even made the aliens look gross and ugly, and they are intentionally very different from bajorans and clearly wouldn't gel with that society if forced to share a planet
>>222698705guess I'm presooming that the writers were the same as modern writers are now when it comes to these sorts of topics and that they just implemented it badly, guess notI liked the episode tbhdesu, but it was bizzare not knowing how to interpret what the writers were going for (apart from the obvious 'this won't work you retards' angle from the Bajoran per.)
The DS9 one with the evil cunt who forces everyone to live like hippies and she remains smug even when she gets hauled away for her crimes
Captain Captain KirkyI just popped a perky
>>222698400I love the irony of this episode in that the Bajorans themselves are a disgusting and reprehensible "people" and are faced with an even more disgusting and reprehensible "people". It's like Syrians trying to cross into Poland.
>>222698768I think the general message of the episode is"be compassionate, but not at your own expense". DS9 was all about the no perfect solution angle too. Sometimes you gotta make hard choices. Bajornas only even considered it because they are also religious nuts and understand the retardation
>>222698658>why Kira or anyone else would feel bad for themThat was just an act. In reality Kira was pic related.
It was a puppet hazard
>>222698888yeah I'll need to give the episode another watch once I've gone through the series again, not that I'm expecting to pick up on much more nuance in the acting, but maybe a more overall rounded look considering what you mentioned on overall DS9 themes
>>222698774I know in Star Trek these types of people are supposed to not exist anymore but it just goes to show the obvious that anyone who would sign up for that "be in charge of colonizing this dirt in the middle of nowhere" shit is probably in it to become a cult leader

Is Kurtzmans contract actually up now or not?
>>222697036I wouldn't say it's the entire identity, but again, if the gimmick episodes are the ones best received and most talked about you'll get more of those in later seasons. Studios don't give a fuck about outrage, they harvest that for marketing, they look at the best ratings and positive critiques when deciding which way to steer the tone between seasons.
>>222699578I think there was supposed to be an announcement this month, but it hasn't come out yet to my knowledge.

>>222700042With less problematic leads.
>>222697469>There is a reason it is the most streamed Trek show, or at least was back when we still had those metrics (when Trek was on Netflix), yes even above TNG.Sure, after Season 3 it becomes normieslop that splits its time between shitting on Roddenberry's philosophy and glorifying war, because its original run ratings were so shit compared to TNG and Voyager that the Trek franchise made its first pivot towards trying to please non-Trek fans. And the reason it does well on streaming is just that: it's normietrek. I've said it before and I'll say it again - DS9 is excellent sci-fi television, but it's largely terrible Star Trek.
Why are pronouns still up for debate by the time of Discovery?TOS dealt with contemporary issues much better. Why is there a Russian on the bridge? Never explained, people just assumed global peace came at some point. Uhura isn't concerned by racist language. She's doesn't know what inner-species racism even is.Meanwhile STD plays the pronoun game ad nauseam.

How has your /trek/ journey been thus far?
>>222698658>If the writers were trying to makes us sympathise then it didn't really work very well imoThe whole point of that episode was to expose Bajoran hypocrisy. The Warty aliens were just like the Bajorans. A peaceful, spiritual race of farmers who were following a prophecy. They wouldn't accept another planet because they firmly believed settling on Bajor fulfilled their prophecy. But at the end of the day the "enlightened" Bajorans who had just suffered 50 years of persecution under the Cardassian occupation said "fuck off, not our problem". And they did it for a very simple, basic human need, a desire to have a place of their own. They fought for 50 years to get their world back, and they weren't about to hand part of it over to a different type of invader. Its an episode where the pretense of progressive Bajoran culture ran into reality, and reality won.Its a good episode and the sort of thing Nu Trek would never do.
