Gotta say, it was neat finally seeing Jane Asher in something since I only ever knew her as the pale, freckly redhead McCartney dated during peak Beatlemania. She's even prettier than I remember and the proper Bri'ish accent suits her.
Deep End is an excellent film as well, but that goes without saying. It delivers in essentially every aspect you can imagine right down to the ending.

>“Jane is just a dream director to work with,” she says. “Working with a writer-director is so special too, because you know that passion is there and they have all the answers to your questions, and I think that’s just such a great collaboration, so more of that is what I look forward to."

>Fix’s future is looking especially bright given her sensitive, all-in performance in Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. One key moment is a sex scene in the film-within-a-film that is dreamily layered in subtext. Without spoiling what happens, Schoenbrun’s general advice was to “let it happen, let it happen.”

>“It was so nice to have all of that information, because when I got on set, I felt that it was in me, and I could let it go, and just be present in my body, so that all of those things that are happening internally can come out, and it’s not forced in any way,” Fix says.

None of that is grooming.

I'm nice, but I'm mentally ill and I think anyone can notice.

The interesting part about it is that I've noticed getting drowned in pussy by extremely mentally ill women in these last few months since I've fully embraced the illness, even got messaged by a woman I used to talk to and sext which had a weird "no nudity" rule when we did sext and was super controlling... but her boyfriend died like 2 months ago and now she sends me nudes everyday and told me she wants me to rape her like her father did when she was a child. This world is a fuck, man.

Films for these feels.

finally met a beautiful 10/10 queen who claims to be a film nerd but she only likes mainstream slop directors like Ozu, Fassbinder, Max Ophuls. Her favorite movie is ON THE SILVER GLOBE!!! Barf!

>>222707956
The best explanation I've read of it is this: >>222708024
>>
If you think every film should have coherent, structured, linear narrative you do not belong here
>>
I really like watching medium budget movies from the 70s and 80s where they can afford a good crew but don't have enough money for a full costume department or sets so you get to see a fairly accurate snapshot of real life at the time, story aside.
>>
>>222708314
And how they often shoot on location in places that don't even feel real, like some fabled land frozen in time
>>
>>222708168
>structured
If your narative isn't "structured" in any way, it's not a narrative to begin with. That structure doesn't have to be linear or coherent, it doesn't need to be obvious or conventional or a textbook case, but if you have any narrative, it will have some structure by definition.
>>
>>222708370
>If your narative isn't "structured" in any way, it's not a narrative to begin with.
Says who?
>>
>>222708412
Common sense. Try to write a narrative and avoid it having any kind of structure. You'll find out that that's pretty much impossible, because everything you do to avoid structure will define that narrative in just a different way. Any way you bend it will give it structure.
>>
>>222708168
Zulawski just sucks at the traditional narrative style and also experimental narrative styles, thoughbeit. He would also suck at non narrative film art, if I say so myself.
>>
>>222708478
>everything you do to avoid structure will define that narrative in just a different way
Not how it works, at all. Lmao
>>
>>222708356
Even better if they have a really good cinematographer. I rewatched The Fabulous Stains today, Bruce Surtees did the cinematography and there's some really great shots of the protagonist looking down at the active massive steel plant in Johnstown, PA and a bunch of interiors that definitely don't look anything like that anymore.
>>
It's kinda weird that the most notable summer film festivals are...Karlovy Vary and Tribeca You'd think summer would be a perfect time for a film festival. But instead a bunch of major festivals are squeezed on in the first half of Autumn.
>Venice
>Telluride
>Toronto
>New York
>London
>San Sebastian
Winter has
>Rotterdam
>Sundance
>Berlin
Spring is also scarce
>Cannes
>South by Southwest
>CPH: DOX
>BFI: Flare (if you specifically have interest in queer films)
Now on why this matters to me, so many fucking films end up premiereing way late into the year and so they often don't get to theatres until next year, VOD releases too. Berlinale and Cannes offset it a bit by having a really large program pool, with independent selections and such (Cannes has like three) but still. So many fucking festivals in Fall. Première the movies earlier and release the movies earlier please.

The only thing that looked somewhat interesting was the new Refn because it was so polarizing. A lot of the best films of this century are divisive
>>
>>222708586
I watched it and it sucked. And I think The Neon Demon and Too Old to Die Young are his best work so I don't have an aversion to his meme neon period. But Her Private Hell genuinely was kinda ass. It's just weirdly stiff and not in the same melancholic way Refn usually is. I also hate the hapa male actor, he has an annoying face.
>>

She thought it was just okay. I think it lacked tension or spectacle for her.

I also showed her Sorcerer and she loved it but not as much as she loves Jaws.
>>
Only gay film my mom saw with me a little was Happy Together, she walked in the room as i was watching, sat down for a few minutes, saw the absolute faggotry on screen and said "gross. This doesn't bother you?", and after i said "no, not really", she watched for a few minutes more and then got up and left, kek.
>>
>>222709056
I was never a super big fan of Jaws, it's like a 7/10 for me. Were the conversations on the boat supposed to be tension building? Those characters did not interest me and I was, dare I say, bored. But there's still stuff to repsect about it. Fuck ass John Williams soundtrack tho, aside from the main theme. What's his fucking deal with whimsical fairy music? This is the first time Spielberg started doing this thing ai hate where he puts Hollywood fairytale whimsy where it doesn't belong. It was mostly fine through the 80s since he did mainly those whimsical movies where it fit, but it started getting bad by the 90s. I also have issues with Jurassic Park for that same reason. Like at the start the whimsy is fine, but in the middle of a movie it's tension breaking.

>The entire thing is the director, saying he wants to be a woman lesbian, while being chased down and raped, which he will have the biggest orgasm ever because he's a dirty female slut and women obviously get off the hardest when they're sexualised and raped.
>The whole point of being watched, is that he wants to see himself, as a woman, being raped, from the perspective the rapist, because he gets off on being seen as a woman.

>I love how people are reviewing this film based on it's thin deep "feminist/lesbian" themes, when in reality, it's just a thin cover for him bragging about his AGP fetishism
The guy who had this spergout doesn't realize that the actually consistently liberal worldview inevitably goes into sexual liberalism and in sexual liberalism sexual fetishism can in fact be tied to those other themes. Like to this guy fetishism is just "dick hard" with nothing else in there, but when you get into it, fetishism for many not only has further meaning but goes even beyond sexual attraction into more general attraction, like some people with fetishes experience them both sexually AND non-sexually. And obviously this can be tied into lesbianism and femenism and whatnot.
Not to mention the fact that people can just have their own fucking interpretations, who cares what the intention was. Although I'm guessing it's too obvious to overlook when you're "in the know". This tranny ain't subtle.

Early Nier games are arty from what I've gathered without playing them. An arty game I have experience with would probably be Shadow of the Colossus. It's pretty /film/ic. Non-mainstream games I like aren't really arty but just highly autistic.
>>
>>222715093
>MGS and Silent Hill
sure, these are more artistically interesting than most games but their the movie equivalent would be like something Ari Ester would make
as in, more artistically interesting, but not so challenging or experimental that it prevents it from reaching a big audience and being successful

I wouldn't say MGS and Silent Hill are the game equivalents of Arthouse film
I'm sure there are much more niche, experimental, and challenging games out there
>>
>>222715277
The first Nier is dynasty warriors but making the gameplay even more tedious and unenjoyable on purpose. So yeah it's artistic but not as much as Taro's later stuff and "i mad it bad on purpose" is probably the most juvenile stage of art right next to some variant of "god made bad things so we can enjoy good things more"

You'll start seeing the difference if you pay attention enough. It's a bit of a curse desu, at some point I got really into the HQ encoding of my own BDs (debanding and fixing dirty lines etc.) and you can never unsee it. I avoid watching films on my pc because of it, on my tv dont notice it at all. VP9, AV1 and even HEVC are all developed and or marketed by and for companies that want to safe money on bandwith, HEVC to a lesser extend but all those claims about "same quality at 50% bitrate!!!" should be interpreted as you can safe x bandwith before the majority of your customers (who watch on their phone/laptop/tv with motion interpolation turned on) start complaining. They achieve this by blurring the shit out of everything, even at high bitrates. HEVC (x265 for us consumers) can be properly tuned for HQ but beyond animation and 4K there is no real bitrate savings compared to x264 if you want a proper encode, and so in that case you might as well use the encoder thats HQ by default, faster and more compatible. Image quality stats are also pretty pointless, the only way to check transparency is to use YOUR own eyes and screen, everyone has a different tolerance for this shite. Thats also why I recommended downscaling to 720p, at 1080p I still see encoding artifacts in these vids at the bitrate 4chan supports, 720p is pretty much transparent to me.

For me, the Silent Hill games are the exceptions that prove the validity of the rule. To say that video games are not art is the same as saying that a barking dog never bites or that the Ramones made the same song a hundred times. Of course these things are not true, but if we have to factor in exceptions to every sweeping statement we make in life, then we can never make any sweeping statements. The silent prefix of any such statement is, of course, “By and large”.
By and large, video games have zero artistic value. I don’t think their attachment to craft elements commonly used to create art makes them art, otherwise porno would also be an art by virtue of being created by the same craft that makes cinema. (Is porno art? A separate argument, but I say porno is garbage — by and large.)
In fact, though I like Kojimbo and do consider him a visionary, I find his starfucker mentality exhausting, and his attempts to build cultural status by associating his games with films and film stars — it’s the same tired old trick that garbage film adaptations of classic novels do; the idea that a movie adaptation of, for example, Pride and Prejudice, has an in-built artistic value by virtue of its association with a canonical text, is the same kind of rubbish that plagues film criticism. It’s our grandparent’s middle class laziness that makes them think they’re taking in high culture by watching period pieces, and it’s our generation’s middle class laziness that makes us think we’re taking in high culture by playing games that turn themselves into “interactive movies”.
(1/2)
>>
>>222715955
There are some games that I would consider to have high artistic value, of course. The Silent Hill games and their attempt to align themselves with works with high cultural cache doesn’t preclude them from being art, I just mean that they are not automatically so for doing this. In fact, the less Silent Hill pulls from pop culture, the better it is. I love the Sonic Youth and Stephen King references in 1, but Team Silent seriously come into their own once they stop standing on the shoulders of giants and start making their own strides artistically — and even dwarf them. Silent Hill 3 makes references to Session 9 and Jacob’s Ladder, but I would say that Silent Hill 3 has far more merit artistically than both of those (and is my favourite SH game).
Re: Kojima, I think that The Phantom Pain is a mature and profound work of art. I am less impressed with the Death Stranding cycle. Kojima seems to think with these that just having famous actors in it makes it inherently cinematic, but as I have already outlined, I do not believe this is the case.
I think that the video game industry’s intent on turning the consumer into a brainless, button pushing zombie that wants to consoom, consoom, consoom, with games designed around hours and hours spent playing them, high replayability, DLC, these in-baked things have nothing to do with art, rather than likening this to cinema I liken it to Onlyfans, where the intention is for you to keep spending, keep coming, and keep coming back…

For me, in order for The Phantom Pain to be a truly great work of art on the level of Tarkovsky or Bresson, it should have deleted itself from the disc upon the credits rolling, and locked your game station out of playing the game forever. What a statement that would be! A true phantom pain. A game that would make you feel real grief and loss like a film or novel can, and not just the satisfaction and itch-scratching that the video game industry necessitates.

To larp is understood in this era as basically "to pose as", meaning, you present yourself as a knower of something, or as dabbling in a subculture, while basically knowing nothing of it. It's kinda like what the term poser used to mean back in the day, so saying a director is "larped" means it's very likely to be mentioned constantly by poseurs and dilettantes as a way to gain social status among the uninitiated in a certain field.

He'd be considered conservative by today's standards. I don't think he would get along super well with modern feminists, modern vegans, anti-capitalists, etcetera. A large portion of modern leftism is based only on resentment and searching for a scapegoat for one's problems (men, the rich, the meat eaters), while Godard actually wanted to change the system so that there was more dignity to be found in humanity, but people nowadays give more of a fuck about their pronouns than actually helping people dying of hunger or getting treated like shit at their crappy jobs. I think Godard in the big 26 would hate most mainstream leftism and would be essentially a left wing conservative; his posture on girls and guns should speak for itself.

No leftist is ever on particularly good ground arguing on this. You're forced to litigate over why all the changes you want (which you, by definition, must want) are necessary but all the other shit isn't (but which is arrived at via similar if not the same methods to your own) with people to your left and people on your right who'll turn the very critique you're trying to mount against you.

I think saying Lynch is a larped director is weird because the majority of his stuff is plenty accessible to mainstream audiences and has mainstream success. >>222717798
>they're right.
Depends. They're right about a lot of things: Raising animals just to kill and eat them is cruel and pointless. The big farming industry is exploitative (hell, every big industry is, just look at Hollywood) and the way milk and eggs are produced in large numbers for cheap is certainly not ideal. And, yes, growing crops for animal food rather than directly for human consumption is retarded and has ecological costs.
On the other hand, vegans can be incredibly stupid about other things: Their refusal to eat honey because it's made by animals, even though beekeepers usually care about their bee hives on a personal level and support bee protection like no one else. Or their refusal to drink milk even if bought from a local farmer who treats his animals well.
Overall, I'd say that being vegetarian is the more reasonable alternative, really. Ideally, buying milk and eggs locally if you can.

Twin Peaks was a huge cultural phenomenon when it was airing (at least until the season 2 falloff) and I don't think there was any perceived "prestige" status for the average person. I've seen old news articles where it was being categorized with the other primetime soap operas of the era like Dallas and Knots Landing.
>>
>>222718336
>Raising animals just to kill and eat them is cruel and pointless
Not necessarily. At its best, the life of a farm animal is at the very least a far better life than most lives in the wild.
>>
>>222718316
Yes.

>>222718336
I think he was making a joke, but I think the actual point about why veganism is retarded is because it's based on a black / white logic in which all consumption of animals and animal products = bad, while the truth is that ethically produced animal food is just fine and natural, and the real problem is animal cruelty and cruel production systems like the ones you mentioned. I guess radical vegans would just suicide if they lived back in the hunter-gatherer era, because in their mind, killing for sustenance = cruelty.

Yes. Literally the most watched and talked about Sunday evening series in the US during season 1 in 1990 (before the network moved it to a Thursday slot during season 2), also huge in all of Europe and Japan. It pretty much changed the TV landscape and allowed its successors in the 90s to be more daring and ambitious in their production and in how they told their stories; X-Files is often cited as one of the big profiteers of this.

>the life of a farm animal is at the very least a far better life than most lives in the wild.
Arguably, yes. But what happens in the wild is not really a concern for human beings (mostly, since of course there are forresters and hunters trying to regulate the animal populations in their forrests). We don't breed animals in large numbers to release them into the wilds, but we do breed animals to keep them on farms. If an animal is born in the wild, that's just what it is and it'll have to deal with it. But if it's born on a farm, that's usually for the sake of being "used" by humans, and I guess that should come with a certain responsibility on our part.

Just tell her you're a strict Bazinist (as in André Bazin). Say that you're opposed to Expressionism or montage, as they clutter and get in the way of the misè-en-scene. It'll get her undies wet on the spot.

German expressionism is normie tier, just play some eroguro shit from the 90s to her and introduce her to the trvth.

>"German expressionism", I've no clue wtf that is.
Caligari, Nosferatu, Metropolis.
Basically all of Murnau and the early Lang. There are some other, lesser known, examples. But since she's in film school, she's of course talking about those popular ones.
>>
Genuinely though, I have no fucking idea what Bazin means when he calls Murnau a Realist and not an Expressionist. Perhaps I'm just deeply misunderstanding his thesis.

It's one thing to say that we have a responsibility to animals, and another to specify that that responsibility is to refrain from killing them for food. Even if you hold that we do have that responsibility, I'd seriously challenge the idea that shirking it amounts to cruelty (murder carried out with all the concern in the world for the victim's suffering is still murder, but it's arguably not a cruel thing).

Can you cry watching arthouse films? I remember I used to cry all the time but then I got used to melodramas and anime trash where every scene is over-the-top with emotions and everytime I watch an arthouse film I just don't feel anything anymore, that shit destroyed my brain.

Very rarely, but it happens. I'd rather cry to a nice ass on a good porno, for it is so beautiful. Unironically.

Big music fan. Admittedly don’t read like I want to or should though. Been saying I’ve been going to get it together on that front for years.

That is a beautiful car. Building and painting models is not for me though

It was an incredible art movement. Hitler ruined it though- easily the worst thing he did >huehuehue

I am lucky to have a pretty cool stereo system myself so listen to music a lot in the little free time I have. If I have a free morning or something (rare) I usually try to hike with a little fly fishing mixed in

I guess I just love women more than the average person. I really enjoy wasting my time with women, talking with women, etc. And sex should be decriminalized.

I'm more likely to cry over more simple things like selflessness and great acts of empathy over more complex and challenging things. Like I think I cried twice the last time I watched It's A Wonderful Life (the "honeymoon" and the ending) and the end of The Straight Story. But it's unlikely for me to cry over something much sadder or like Lilya 4 Ever or Dancer in the Dark.

It is fun to write in a flamboyant way sometimes. I talk like that sometimes too, for the literary influence is strong in me.

As always, it depends on the context. There were times and there are places where raising animals to kill them for food made some sense (even though, in general, growing crops for yourself rather than the animal is more economic). But how the "western world" does it nowadays, in large numbers, is definitely cruel. A good first step would be to de-industrialize it, bring it back to the individual small farmers. That would raise the costs of meat, but of course, that would then also lower the general demand. It would make sure milk and eggs are kept "ethical" as well, which renders the whole vegan vs. vegetarian argument moot.

Yes. That's my point. Raising animals to kill and eat is not an inherently cruel thing, so the idea that vegans are right that "raising animals just to kill and eat them is cruel and pointless" is false. You can eat meat and care about the welfare of the animals killed for it, which puts the onus on vegans and vegetarians to find stronger arguments.
>>
>>222719061
The act of taking a life is cruel. We're intelligent being capable of perceiving goodness, if you choose to kill in order to eat you are doing a cruel, immoral act. Now, I'm not one of those retarded vegans that will condemn everyone who doesn't follow his ideals, if you eat meat that's your choice, it's a part of life I guess, but don't try to say it's not immoral or cruel.
