A character drama that stays very much in the confines of that, doesn't play much with metaphors even. The underlying themes are there, but they mostly get reflected in the titular character's arc and moral conundrums, little anywhere else. That is a bit of a crux with the story: The other characters (safe maybe for Mariko) feel more like plot devices than actual characters that have much going on.I'd also argue its exposition goes on for too long. The conflict doesn't really come up until 30 minutes into the story. And the Ryuji's decision to leave the yakuza doesn't happen until the halfway-mark (45 minutes in). This is where the film does change tone and pace, and it gives the whole thing a two-act structure, albeit a very unconventional one, since act 2 doesn't mirror act 1 at all and act 1 itself is too preoccupied with exposition.Another point to make is that the main character's "fall" doesn't take up enough space - only really coming into play the last few minutes of the film - and while his "hamartia" was always there, there isn't much real escalation of it, so the "catastrophe" as a payoff comes a bit out of left field.Decent cinematography: Generally great and interesting shot composition, good mise-en-scene, but rather flat lighting in the brighter scenes - interestingly, it does its night scene lighting really well. I think it could have done more with its colour choices for set and costume design: The first half often comes down to its shots being kept entirely in neutral desaturated colours, whites, greys and light browns. The second half to a rather overdone mish-mash of very saturated colours. That in itself is of course intended and symbolic, with the changing of the setting - but both halves could have benefitted from more "targeted" contrasts.

Cinema is a such a great artistic medium, but I honestly don't think it's being explored deeply enough. And a big reason for that I think is because most directors come from elite backgrounds. I personally don't think you can create art if you spent your whole life in the high society, true art comes from human suffering, from experiencing poverty, hunger, seeing death up close and not from being sheltered and pampered. I think this is probably the reason 90% of films are trash. Like, if you take all the great writers you can see they all lived hard lives: Tolstoy went to war, Dostoyevsky was almost executed, Dickens was forced to work as a child, Victor Hugo was exiled. Now take all the most famous directors, Spielberg, Scorsese, Nolan, all from the high class, probably never even faced adversity.
