In tv shows we create ships and costumes to express what the aliens are like, imagine suddenly having to deal with a species concerned only with expansion and building the tech to get from point A to point B, and the actual experience of that journey is secondary to completing their goal. Even the space suits we wear are these giant bulky clusterfucks and we have to remove the helmets to show our faces and communicate clearly, there's a suit of armor we build around ourselves with our technology, from an outsider's perspective it's more layers of intimidating visuals to get through to the heart of who these humans really are.
