I'm a little late today because I had to finish an assignment that's due for my college class - it's my last semester! I wonder what episode I'll be watching when I graduate next Spring. Anyway, gonna watch Charlie X today, but like last time here's a little something about yesterday's episode I looked up after finishing it. You see, the SRT files I'm using (for my internet archive rips of TOS with all the original insert shots of the Enterprise in space) don't translate the Swahili Uhura and the Salt Vampire speak to eachother, it just says [SPEAKS SWAHILI]. I fucking hate it when they do that, at least transcribe it! But anyway, I tried to find a translation online and could only dredge up what the Salt Vampire says to Uhura to try and seduce her:
>"How are you, friend? I think of you, beautiful lady. You should never know loneliness."
...it probably sounds more romantic in the original tongue.

They do the commencement ceremony as an annual thing. I don't get it myself, but I also don't really care.

>>223117508
Janice as a recurring character was surprising, since she's not as popular as all the men and Uhura. It's really interesting how normal she is, though I suppose she's just a Yeoman. Is that like the precursor to Ensign? Or is it even lower in the ranks? The crew must have had some fun coming up with all the screwy things for Charlie to do, like turning Tina into a lizard or taking away that laughing woman's face. How the hell was Charlie supposed to do any judo sparring with Kirk when he didn't have a shirt on? There's no place to grip, that's what the gi are for.
Even if it is a bit of a ripoff of the Twilight Zone episode "It's a Good Life" that raises the age of the boy up to be in the midst of puberty with the urge to sow some wild oats, the ending is incredibly tragic for Charlie. Condemned to a life without touch or emotion because he learned his lesson too late, but I suppose he had to pay the price for his callous destruction of the Antares.

Finally actually watching TOS through after only kind of tangentially catching sporadic episodes all my life and Im having serious trouble sticking with it. It is SUPER fucking dated and you can tell the budget was only slightly higher than old school dr who. Plus female acting back then was its own strange flavor of dogshit, every single person with tits on the show is basically interchangable with the exception if Uhura and even then only just. And why the fuck is Mudd dressed like a seafood restaurant pirate? Were they seriously that hard up for costuming at paramount? I'm also seriously losing respect for McCoy, he's like a goddamn anxious girlfriend with his worried bitching about Kirk

>>
>>223121371
No. Because if you make it canon you also have to make Picard is now a robot canon which makes S1 and S2 canon.
S3 only looked good next to the catastrophic disasters that were S1 and S2 anyway
>>
Wow, good thing Kirk was on the Enterprise in that moment. Otherwise, Spock, Scotty and the others would have gladly agreed to genocide an entire planet.

Really Jellico is just kind of your average hard ass military commander. I don't know how many Navy boys are in here (probably none) but when you go to a new ship, it's common for every captain to have his own style, his own standards, his own way of running the ship

It was a secret war that nobody knew it happened until it ended!
>>
>>223127210
“The Eugenics Wars (or the Great Wars) were a series of conflicts originally fought on Earth between 1992 and 1996 (TOS: "Space Seed"), which later shifted to the 21st century due to efforts by various temporal factions to stop the rise of Khan and the events that followed; Romulan temporal agent Sera suggested that "it's almost as if time itself is pushing back and events reinsert themselves." (SNW: "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow") It has also been known as the Eugenic War, Second Civil War and World War III at different points. (SNW: "Strange New Worlds") The result of a scientific attempt to improve the Human race through selective breeding and genetic engineering, the wars devastated parts of Earth, by some estimates officially causing some thirty million to tens of millions of deaths, and nearly plunging the planet into a new Dark Age. (TOS: "Space Seed"; ENT: "Borderland"; SNW: "Ad Astra per Aspera")

The Eugenics Wars resulted in a ban on genetic engineering and centuries of prejudice against Augments, who were forbidden from enlisting in Starfleet, as were those erroneously perceived to be Augments due to their ancestry.“

It goes without saying they would be fixing or aborting autists in this time. You also have to remember how permeable and amorphous this America thing is. The eugenicists are influencing our politics and instituting the practice here. What do you think abortion is? And the gene modification is being rolled out too

> In 1992, the Augments seized power in over forty nations on Earth, leading to the conflict known to them as the Eugenics Wars, as they battled among each other and with "normal" Humans. Most of the Augments behaved as ruthless despots, treating their subjects like slaves.
It was a handful of augments who became warlords and ruled over normal humans, there was no widespread eugenics activities.

Imagine if there were a species in Star Trek that showed up riding giant flaming metal dicks around in space. First impression, good guys or bad guys? Even Klingons and Romulans have artistic flourishes in their ship designs, the only thing as minimalist and single-minded in its purpose and aesthetics is the Borg. In tv shows we create ships and costumes to express what the aliens are like, imagine suddenly having to deal with a species concerned only with expansion and building the tech to get from point A to point B, and the actual experience of that journey is secondary to completing their goal. Even the space suits we wear are these giant bulky clusterfucks and we have to remove the helmets to show our faces and communicate clearly, there's a suit of armor we build around ourselves with our technology, from an outsider's perspective it's more layers of intimidating visuals to get through to the heart of who these humans really are.

I don't really care for the E as it was part of the same actionshlock decisions that led to Picard coming out the way it is. If it wasn't for First Contact, I'd be happy to throw the entire TNG movie era into the same bin.
>>
>>223129278
First Contact kinda sucks too when judged as Star Trek.
It's a decent action movie but its dumb as a brick
>>
>>223129294
First Contact is narratively important as it finally dispels any pretensions that 24th century humanity is significantly different from 21st century humanity after seasons of Picard literally calling them barbarians, tying it back to TOS where Kirk states the same about the 23rd century, giving hope that (you) the audience can some day emulate what you see on the TV screen in little ways.
Granted the way they come upon that image leaves something to be desired, but I think it neatly ties up a major thematic thread that wasn't left entirely resolved by the end of TNG.

>>223129294
I will never forgive them Borg Queen.
>>
>>223129278
I remember a quote from one of the producers that "it looks like it's going warp 5 just standing still", and that about sums up the design philosophy. It had a lot of slapdash elements (like the impulse vents being placed so that they'd fry the nacelles, or the forward torpedo launcher and the captain's yacht impossibly occupying the same space), and it had the most perfunctory/forgettable interiors of any of the pre-reboot hero ships - I'd seriously even take the Defiant's.

Look you can pick out good parts from it, but its flaws when you consider it an extension of TNG are major.
Picard's character and his emotional relation to the Borg and his assimilation are laughably awful. We just never needed a scene of Picard screaming while gunning borg down with a machine gun or whatever. It created the Borg Queen which ruined every future appearance of the borg from then on. Even worse than Descent did too

I made a list of all the beats Fajo hit:
>actor is Jewish
>other actor who they initially cast was Jewish too
>face and mannerisms are stereotypically Jewish (Saul Rubinek can't really do anything else)
>wears a small cap on his head
>smarmy, dishonest merchant
>motivated entirely by base avarice
>nouveau-riche art collector, especially in line with early 20th century stereotypes
>resistant to any understanding of the immorality of his actions
>rival art collector who he wants to impress is played by another Jewish actor, with a Yiddish accent even
>keeps a crew of street urchin servants who he claims are his wards but who he really exploits and abuses with great cruelty à la Fagin
>Data: "You are a fine debater, sir. It is a shame you have used your verbal gifts for mere hucksterism and the advancement of your own greed."
>And finally,
>*poisons the fucking water supply*, a trope so old school that most people have forgotten about it.
My only conclusion (given that the writer, producers and performers involved are all Jewish) is that the character was intended as some kind of self-parody or ironic recapitulation or something.

How did Ro and Geordi:
>breathe
>stand
>perceive things
?
>>
>>223130322
Remember that Farscape episode where they get shrunk down and one of the wonders how they are still able to breathe because the air molecules no longer fit through their noses, and Rygel said just go with it, there is no explanation

Farscape had the tone and setting to handwave almost anything as alien magic/science.
Farscape is really great. It's bizarro trek

You gotta pace yourself on Farscape. You watch too much the crew infighting becomes too much, and the weirdness becomes too normal. Stretch it out a bit more and it hits much better.
Scorpius is always kino though.

They are standing on the gravity plating which has a subspace component to its inner workings. Maybe it's able to have an effect on out of phase matter as well. Breathing is bullshit tho. it's impossible. They should be dead on arrival
