Watching "Where No Man Has Gone Before", the 2nd pilot, tonight. Even though I accidentally skipped ahead, I still wanna talk about Balance of Terror a little more. Why do they depict most of space flatly like this? In and Out of Universe. I get that the Milky Way Galaxy is a flat disc and that the 4 quadrants are solely the Milky Way (very crowded galaxy, honestly), but even with its pancake shape it's still 1,000 lightyears thick so surely 2 planets could hypothetically overlap when viewed from the top down.
