Realistically you should hear the guy's original speech followed by a synthesized voice on a slight delay, occasionally doubling back and correcting itself, and it should take at least a few hours of exposure to start to process a language not in the data banks. Like why the hell should there not be even a modicum of challenge (except for that one case) in communicating with extraterrestrial beings who you've never encountered before? A good benchmark for allowable fancy in Trek should be to treat the logistics of interstellar travel like those of the Age of Sail, yet even by that incredibly generous standard you still couldn't just roll up on a random tribe in Indonesia and start chatting with them.

Production issue for machine prosthetics, or narrative issue for wanting to move things along?This is clearly the episode that introduces us to Nurse Chapel, which makes it really stick out after the culmination of "her long-held secret crush" on Spock in The Naked Time. This was the worst day of her life: her fiance is cheating on her with some floozy, said floozy was an android, her fiance has gone insane and wants to replace humanity with androids, her fiance has been dead this whole time and an android of him was doing all this to her, the android kisses the floozy and kills himself right in front of her. No wonder she stays on with the crew, it's a suicide risk for her to just go back to that empty housing unit wherever it is.
