After it had been mentioned in a Youtube video and ranked amid the top 10 satanist horror movies, I watched "Evilspeak" (1981). Oh boy. This movie goes on for far too long, and as it goes on, it alternates between normal picture and sound quality and something that might have been shot on 8mm amateur film 50 years ago. An orphan and cadet in a military boarding school gets bullied by his classmates. He uses a 1981 school computer, an Apple II with 48 kilobytes (= 0.00004 gigabytes) of memory and no internet connection (there was no private internet at the time) to translate Latin and come up with a spell to summon Satan -- which it does.Aside from the fact that this is obvious bullshit, the writer and director had about 15 - 20 minutes of material here and didn't know how to turn it into a full length horror movie. But he did anyway. Now compare that to "Lights Out" (2016) for which the writer and director had a 5 minute concept film. When he was offered the chance to turn that into a movie, he came up with an actual story, fleshed out the story and the characters and got help for the finishing touches by a professional screen writer. And it turned out to be a good and scary horror movie.3/10 from me for "Evilspeak". Nice idea but unsatisfying realisation.
>Amityverse>Amityverse: InfinityCan there be a global ban on using Amity in any movie title unless it's directly connected to the originals?
>>223285524I don't know how these film makers still think it's funny
>>223285524>AmityverseSaw a documentary last week. It had an interview with the owner of the house in it that bought the house after the murders but before the family moved in that was supposedly "haunted". (Which got turned into the Amity movies and The Conjuring.) Anyway, he said the new owner couldn't wait to move in so that he could sell book and movie rights. Hauntings were in fashion after "The Exorcist" had made millions and Ed and Lorraine Warren became famous con artists and grifters.
>>223285670>con artists and griftersThey provided a useful service
>>223285670What made boomers so gullible and susceptible to con artists/grifters? They fell for the pet rock, magical jesus water, email scams, AI videos, superstitions, media propaganda (ex: stranger danger), and plenty more.

was I filtered by Plan 9 from OuterSpace or is it just not good’
>>223278931
>>223285811Interestingly the people that called them said they didn't stay long, and they only made things worse. The Warrens weren't interested in helping people, they were interested in provoking reactions so that they could sell their stories as books and movies.>>223285820That would be an interesting question to explore. Maybe because the movies they grew up with only had poor special effects (models, puppets) that you could spot instantly? Maybe because they believed in the supernatural? (I'm thinking of the "Satanic Panic" of 1980's parents here.)
>>223285881I can understand the media propaganda since all they had were tribal approved information from newspapers, local news channels, and radio. But how on earth do you actually believe that some blessed jesus water is going to make all your wishes come true? That's just another level of retardation that even the most brainrot zoomer or Alpha would laugh at.
>>223285869Panther Woman cuteAlso it's funny that a lot of old horror revolved around miscegenation, especially with apes, giving people hairier, browner appearances with wider noses, etc
>>223285977To be honest, I've never even heard of "Jesus water" until you mentioned it. My guess is that it's a localized phenomenon that only appears in America's Bible Belt. What they do sell here in Europe is "Zamzam water" for like 10 dollars per bottle. That's water that's supposedly (but not in reality) from the spring that's next to the black cube or Kaaba in Mekka. I don't know if it sells, I don't know any muslims. (And they don't perform well or even average in schools or IQ tests anyway.)

After it had been shilled here a thousand times, I tried to watch that "Camp Miasma" movie - and failed. This isn't horror, it's a self insert gay interest movie from a female queer filmmaker who is so queer that she dreams about Hollywood calling her to remake old IPs, but do so in a woke (read queer) way. The old IP in question are some cheap "Camp Miasma" slasher flicks from the 80s and 90s that are (according to her) "transphobic". Some gay sex ensues, mixed with fantasy movie blood. How did this get financed? How did this get shown at Cannes? I am disappointed. I'm not even going to rate this.
>>223287226>How did this get financed? How did this get shown at Cannes? It's literally explained in the movie

>>223287226The "movie within the movie" had some fun kills (if a bit videogamey), but what really grossed me out was that part with the unmasked killer in his "video store hole" or whatever, just blatantly showing he got both dick and booba (GET IT???) and it just keeps going and going, dangling parts and all

And it does weird people out, except for vanishingly small percentage of the audience who are like that themselves. When it's done in Camp Miasma, I suppose that's not the intended effect because the writer/director is one of these persons her/himself.
>>223287694Autism sheet says it's definitely a contender. I'd add Colony, Bloody Reunion, and The Witch Part 1 & 2 (if you count either as horror). I'd put some of the crime-thrillers over them for violence just because they're more grounded in reality.

Watched that newest Spider Man movie that came out and the whole time I was reminded of Wes Cravens Shocker which is a horror movie that came out in the late 80s where the psychotic murderous villain sort of has the same thing going on that BND does with its antagonist.Any of you guys seen this film? Its very bloody and violent but it's so over the top I couldn't find it frightening, even though conceptually it is. Which I think the director also realized, especially by the end. Would recommend. Lots of good effects (some bad ones, sure) and some fun camerawork.

Resident Evil was really good for the most part, but I agree that there was way, way too much humour. The games have plenty of goofy moments but they always used humour sparingly, whereas the movie is just piling on the quips with reckless abandon.

>>223292596It's a very good adaptation of the atmosphere of the games, but shoots itself in the foot somewhat with the excessive humour. Resident Evil games generally have a few funny moments spread out over the 8+ hour runtime, whereas the movie usually had a quippy moment every few minutes. Some of the humour works, most of it doesn't.

When the movie began to veer into deconstructionist, metatextual territory, it lost me because it's so basic and obvious that it isn't interesting at all. And it fails to be an entertaining horror movie. The theme is of course 'women's experience of sexuality is itself horror' but I don't think Schoenbrun explored that in a particularly compelling way.

>>223294362Watch the stuff Georgina's been in lately, namely Cold Storage and Psycho Killer. Both are kino. She's got another one coming up with David Dastmalchian, The Shepherd, though it's been in production for over a year and doesn't even have a poster. I'm worried about that movie.
>>223294442You have such bad taste in movies. Your opinions are worthless.
>>223294633Go rape your goat before I rape your mother
>>223294672Based.
Where is a horror movie that conveys the terror of having your free time whittled away by pointless shit imposed on you by others? It's my most realistic (and oft realized) fear.
>>223294797I think you're based too anon>>223294969The first one that comes to mind is another Campbell film, All My Friends Hate Me. Interested to hear other recs because that's a great question and premise.
>>223295004Thanks for the recommendation, anon. I'll be sure to check it out sometime soon.
>it's just the director's AGP fantasy where the plot isn't pretending to be important
>>223295170Cheers anon. I hope you will enjoy it. I'm trying to think of horror films about gaslighting and progressive imposition. So Gaslight comes up. Also thinking of The Belko Experiment, Let's Scare Jessica to Death (a favorite around here), The Invitation, Rosemary's Baby, Session 9.
>>223295311i don't like it
>>223294969Stopmotion
/hor/ for this feel?
>>223295254>gaslighting and progressive impositionMidsommar?
Furry Eyes
>>223295361kino surrealist slow burn, a dream within a dream kind of thing. Loved it, not for everyone.>>223295377Probably. I have yet to watch it. I probably should.

>>223295361Seconding this rec.
>>223295361the movie itself is the waste of time. brilliant
>>223295361I remember hearing about this a few times on here. I should watch it. Thanks.
If you like Stopmotion, watch May.
>>223295527They go hand in hand imo. Excision is another good one.
>>223294969The Tenant, and Eraserhead
>>223295593No 80’s
>>223295593>The TenantI haven't seen too many french thrillers/horrors, so that'll be fun. Thanks.
>>223295688Neither of those films from the 80s you low IQ retard
>>223295555I agree. Excision is another favorite.I think Stopmotion and May go together more for the dolls and themes. Excision stands out a bit more for the wild girl performance. It's more straightforward. All three are great if you're into it.
>>223295688I told you to go rape your goat, Sukhdeep
>>223294969Silent Night 2021
>>223295377Midsommar was actually the first recommendation that came to mind, precisely for this reason >>223295444>>223295411I think it's a top-tier psychological horror and genuinely unnerving.>>223295432>filenameI have to watch that (the original) soon>>223295501No problem, hope you enjoy the rec.
>>223294023I like to read the Wikipedia synopsis of movies once I'm done watching them. It's like finishing a book and reading the back of the jacket, just puts a nice bow on the experience.
>>223295254>Let's Scare Jessica to Death, The Invitation, Rosemary's BabyLoved all 3 of these so I should definitely watch the other 2
>>223296060The original 2021 Dutch Speak no Evil is honestly leagues above its remake. It's absolutely worth your time.>>223296099cheers anon.

>>223296265cool. i will watch excision tomorrow
>>223296265This is corroborated by May being written by a female, and Excision by a male.

>>223296328Female directed anything always leaves a stain.
Jeremy Saulnier has a new film coming up called Slayground, it's got Imogen Poots in it. He did Green Room and Blue Ruin, so I'm expecting a violent thriller type.>Set at Halloween, the plot follows Cory Michael Smith’s character, the primary suspect in a mass murder investigation, after he escapes police custody. He goes on the run, attempting to prove his innocence while becoming the target of a massive manhunt.
