Just got back from this. Pretty enjoyable overall and I might go see it a second time next week. The action is good, and the humor that people complain about, while a little grating in the beginning, becomes enjoyable once the movie develops.It's not so much a Resident Evil adaptation as it is a tongue-in-cheek parody of its game logic, which it sometimes does well and other times is too on-the-nose. Stylistically, it feels like it mostly has the newer games in mind, especially RE4 and the remake of RE2, but there are some things that also lean more Code Veronica. If you've played the games, you'll easily pick up on all the nods and gags, and if you haven't it'll seem slightly goofier but it still mostly works.It kind of reminds me of a big budget, theatrical version of the old Resident Evil flash parodies I used to watch on Newgrounds.

I watched "Dracula, Dead and Loving It" (1995), and it was OK for a sunday afternoon. Very Mel Brooksish. (Hey, Melvin turned 100 this summer. Good for him.) Leslie Nielsen plays the titular Dracula and Mel Brooks his opponent Professor van Helsing. There are variations on Bram Stokers original story, for example it's not Jonathan Harker who travels to the Count's castle in Transsylvania, but Renfield (Peter McNicol) instead. Also there are no suitors, Harker is not married to Lucy yet and is her fiancé.Anyway, an amusing installment of the old Dracula story, but if you've seen one Mel Brooks movie, you kinda have seen them all. 5/10.

Le Exorcism Man
I watched "Tarot" (2024). Yet another movie about stupid kids meddling in the black arts, invoking an old curse and dying one by one. But don't you love it when that happens? These ones are racially very diverse (beacause of course they are), they are rich and privileged, and they're jerks. It starts by them renting a house (hey, who doesn't have the money for that). While looking for booze to steal from the owners they break into a cellar that clearly says "PRIVATE! DO NOT ENTER!". They find a cursed tarot card deck and use it to read everyone's horoscope for fun. They realize something's wrong when they start dying in ways that were predicted by the horoscopes that they originally thought were metaphors.The acting isn't too bad, even though I asked myself who wrote the script so that the characters change their core convictions from one sentence to the next. Cinematography, lighting, atmosphere are rather good. But the ten little indians concept and the gypsy curse are such tired tropes, and they didn't even do that right: There is no final girl since the token black guy and the fat asian pothead SOMEHOW return from the dead. And the gypsy woman falls victim to her own curse. Why didn't she do that sooner? So just a 4/10 from me, I thought it could have been better.

Pickman's Model at least makes an attempt to preserving the core plot twist ("his models are real!", to spoil a century-old story), but it stuffs a whole bunch of extra plot in there. I didn't hate it, but it's definitely one of those original-as-inspiration stories rather than an actual attempt at an adaptation. Dreams in the Witch House is just a standard ghost story wearing Lovecraft's skin. It is totally unrelated to the original story aside from using a few of the names. Like, if it wasn't named "Dreams in the Witch House," you'd never in a million years guess that it was in any way related to the original. I did not enjoy it, both because I actually like that story and wish they'd tried to adapt it, and just because I didn't think it was a particularly strong short on its own either. The witch costume is very cool at least. You can count on Del Toro for fun monsters.fwiw I generally enjoyed episodes 1-5 of Cabinet of Curiosities. 1 and 2 are pretty standard horror stories but, again, everybody having access to Del Toro's SFX team means that the monsters are fun. 3 (the Autopsy, which the other Anon mentioned) is an alien abduction deal. 4 is the most out-there of the whole bunch and probably tied for my favorite along with 3, with Kate Micucci as the dorky protagonist who's slowly driven insane by a supernatural cosmetics company. None of them blew my mind but all of those were at least worth their runtimes to me.
Oh, Ginger *snaps*. Liked it better overall than The Howling 1 but that werewolf flick had the better climax. The description (and title) of Ginger Snaps Back kinda undercuts this downer ending but I'll get to that later.
