The arguments between Kirk & Mendez, the question of if Kirk IS letting his personal connection to Spock influence his actions too much, the inability to get a read on Pike's reaction to all this.I'm glad it takes so long to get to the archive footage, because those scenes setting everything up on Starbase 11 followed by Kirk & Mendez pursuing in a damn shuttle, they're really great. I do wish I had skipped The Cage after all because this is such great utilization of that footage, except for the part where you have to sit and rewatch the pilot and realize just how dry it actually is compared to the show.I wonder how they're gonna stick the landing tomorrow, and how close to correct I am for Spock's motivations.

As in, either the conflict solves itself or they solve the immediate conflict and don't bother with what potential aftermath might happen. While the reveal that Mendez was another Talosian illusion from the moment he joined Kirk on the shuttle in part 1 was a very clever twist, the way everything was written in this second half leading up to that makes it feel more like a band-aid for not knowing how to write the framing device after Spock was confined to quarters in last episode's cliffhanger. Yes, the whole point was just to keep Kirk distracted from seizing control of the ship and escaping Talos-IV, but pic-related was just about the laziest way to do it, especially when it continues after they've already found Spock guilty. Why would Pike say that, was he in on the scheme? Did he only have his change of heart after the real Mendez said "We saw what you saw, it's fine. Do whatever you want and we'll look the other way, for Pike's sake." and cleared Spock of all charges? They kept in the lines about the Talosians facing a slow death by extinction, couldn't they have used that as the moral reasoning for Pike returning, alongside the personal desire to return to his normal form? If the Talosians could project their illusions so far out from Talos-IV as to have the fake Mendez in the shuttle, why not just have Sean Kenney made up to look like a revitalized version of Hunter so he could get some big dramatic speech or send-off instead of them cutting straight away from Spock eeling him down the hall to the archive footage of the illusory Pike walking down the elevator with Vina?That's another thing that irks me, how they cut out the illusion Pike but kept the line "And more" from the Magistrate, because there WAS no "And more", she spent the 13 years between then and now alone. It would be so easy to just pick the dialogue of some affirmation from someplace else to cover that up, or just have the pitch-shifted Malachi Throne do the voice for those two lines in addition to his other talks directly with the Enterprise and Kirk.They really dropped the ball on this.

How Number One's cold logic was clearly the inspiration for Spock's character rewrite, especially when she cattily starts saying "Mathematically, you're an old hag" to Vina before the Magistrate interrupts them, or how I didn't realize Pike dropping the phasers by the little door in his cell and then holding onto his anger was done on purpose the moment the women got beamed in, so the Talosians wouldn't pick up on his scheme.The things they cut out for time and to fit with the rewrite for this episode probably would've made me hate it even more if I decided to watch it after watching this, so I'm glad I did it at the very start after all. It's a really solid episode even if it feels a bit drier in places, and a lot better than the way they... well I won't call it butchering, that's a bit too far, but it's like they shaved a few centimeters off it in a delimeat slicer and sold the hamhock at full price anyway. That first part was so good, I guess they just didn't have time to play the rest of The Cage and have time for an actual plot in the framing device.

Looping was done with linear tape and actual splices, it wasn't worth the effort when the audience was already suspending disbelief regarding uniforms, Spock's yelling and smiling, women on the bridge comment etc. It's a legit nitpick but no one would fix it on Desilu dollars.

The uniform thing could be handwaived as a changeover in design from the past decade (as this very thread has been discussing), and Spock being a little more emotional than usual back then isn't too noticeable, mainly from his shouting "THE WOMEN!" when they get beamed down to Pike's enclosure. Background elements like text become far too indistinct and blurred together.Version 3 is like version 2 but also has too much sharpening. You can see extreme loss of detail, like on Sisko's uniform. Shadows become banded and intermediate tones are lost. What you want is basically Version 1 but preserve the darkest areas of the image better and remove as much of the sharpening as you can (all if possible) but do not blur the image. Less is more. Grain is not bad. Do not try to eliminate the grain like you did in v2 and v3, and definitely do not fuck over the shadows like you did in v3.
