The testing of the Neural Neutralizer where Kirk lightheartedly talks about raiding a kitchen after the command "You're hungry" gets lodged into his subconscious was perfect. The Lobotomites running the asylum at Adams' command was just the right amount of unsettling. The opening scene with the transporter crewies forgetting Penal Colony protocols for the forcefield coming back for the finale with Helen disabling the main power grid and Spock beaming down was amazing. It's gotta be the best episode I've watched so far, and that's including the ones from later on that I caught bits and pieces of during the H&I marathon.

Went thrift shopping today and found these 2 history books. The one on the left was released in '94, the final chapter had some concept art for the USS Voyager, and a full list of episodes in Stardate order from The Cage up to DS9's season 2 episode "The Jem'Hadar". The one on the right is from '06 (obviously) and has a bunch of fun reproduction inserts, like the earliest iron-on pattern AMT ever made or a Spock Lives pennant from Wrath of Khan. No hint of NuTrek in either of them.Funniest thing I found skimming through the one on the right is that they made a Q teddy bear, dressed up in his judge outfit. Curiously, there were no paper inserts for the Voyager chapter, even ENT got these "Rescue Emergency Evac" stickers from some unnamed episode.Tonight's episode, The Corbomite Maneuver! 10th to air but 3rd in production order, the first non-pilot episode they filmed! And how Kirk & Bones arguing about what they're gonna put on their reports is what gives Jim the idea to pull the titular maneuver, a Bluff.The reveal of Clint Howard as the real Balok was something I had forgotten was from this episode, so it was a very pleasant surprise. I had already predicted the "all a test" twist from the moment the countdown hit 7 minutes, and the combined performances of Clint and voice actor Walker Edmiston was so light and hopeful for the future of alien contact that I got a little misty-eyed.
