Just finished. I expected to type just "cute and wholesome spooks" but this movie shoehorned in some woke shit that just stuck in my craw and wouldn't go away. 1 is the big obvious one, which is they make a gag about a lesbian wedding and then the lesbians keep popping up in their wedding dresses. They're background, unnamed characters, but it is just so pointless and egregious in a movie like this that it wouldn't leave my head. 2 was making the love interest a black woman. Normally this wouldn't even bother me, but this is a stop motion movie and every little detail has to be decided on and added intentionally; and here they made special effort to make her have little greying dreadlocks with beads and doodads on them. It's just such a specific, "LOOK, I'M BLACK" detail and they even went through the trouble of animating them wiggling around, they by definition can't be an afterthought. And these two completely insignificant things put such an ugly aftertaste in my mouth that I felt like the movie would've provoked me much more deeply if it had the freedom to and wasn't intended for toddlers so young that the movie doesn't even have dialogue. Also this plot is as thin as plots can get. Breddy gud.Same, I found it in a thread about "movies people forgot existed" and Michael J Fox and James Woods made me check it out. It was actually pretty alright, it wasn't great, but it had soul and I wouldn't have minded it being a bit longer or having a sequel.

Just finished. Don Glut was some random kid in Chicago during the 1950s who got a hand me down 8mm camera and started making dozens of monster movies for the pure fun of making them. Stuff like "I Was a Teenage Apeman" and "Slave of the Vampire". He sent in stills of his movies to Famous Monsters of Filmland, which led to him becoming friends with Forry Ackerman and Bob Burns, which led him to moving to LA and going to USC, which led to him being roommates with George Lucas and writing the novelization of Empire Strikes Back. This is a not very good documentary directed by him about those monster movies, but it IS a great story despite being poorly filmed, an inspiring one even. His movies were objectively goofy crap, but his enthusiasm and passion and seemingly compulsive willingness to be inventive and hard-working got him far in life.
