>Judge Dredd (1995)
>5.6 IMDB
>considered "bad" by people of the time
its actually kino and better than the 2012 one (which was bad despite being considered good)
>>
>>223359070
You are correct.
>>
>>223359070
would be better if he didn't do that gay shit with his mouth
>>
>>223359070
Nah. Judge Dredd was a more accurate adaptation, but Dredd was the better movie. Doesn't matter anyways, Taika's film gets to take the cake for worst Judge Dredd movie when it comes out.
>>
>>223359070
I like both. It's not a race and they are different enough to not warrant one
>>
>>223359070
Diane Lane as Hershey is enough to put this over the top.
>>
>>223359070
100% agree with you. 2012 was b grade boring nothingness. Stallone's Dredd was a fun adaptation like the comics.
>>
>>223359168
>Judge Dredd was a more accurate adaptation
No it wasn't, at all. It literally got everything wrong except the costumes and maybe the sets.
That said, I can enjoy both. 95 for being a fun 90s superhero movie and 12 for judgment time.
>>
>Ma-Ma
>>
A perfect Judge Dredd movie would have the look of Stallone's and the plot of 2012's.
>>
>>223359070
Whoever did the design for this version was fucking incredible. Visually it was perfect - the costumes, the props, the city, etc. The rest was utter dogshit, especially having a comedy sidekick.
>>
>>223359450
>The rest was utter dogshit, especially having a comedy sidekick.
Disagree on that. Judge Dredd always also had comedy.
Of course using an established character and just making him into Rob Schneider was the shit thing to do. They literally just had to give him a different name.
>>
>>223359516
>Disagree on that. Judge Dredd always also had comedy.
Yes and some of that did make it in correctly, like blowing up the drunk guy's car. But the sidekick was a hundred steps too far in the wrong direction.

Yeah, it's kino.
>>
i wish i knew what to call the visual style of this movie. it is shared by movies such as
>The Fifth Element (1997)
>Batman & Robin (1997)
and many more i can't remember.
i really like the way it looks, too bad i think there isn't a name for movies using this visual style. it feels more like you are actually there than other movies, world has more "3Dness" to it.
>>
>>223359801
Well, it was the 90s and it was a typical 90s Hollywood star vehicle, so I don't mind it too much.
>>
>>223359070
Movies that underperformed at the box office were considered bad back in the day. This, Licence to Kill, Waterworld, etc. Box office was considered a barometer of quality for some reason. Judge Dredd was a PG-13 movie that got slapped with an R over one scene (the bad guy executing the news guy in his apartment), and it hurt its box office potential.
>>
>>223359070
Karl Urban was a more faithful Judge Dress but this movie had a more faithful world and the Hammerstein puppet still looks incredible today. Karl Urban Dredd in this world would have been a perfect adaptation to me.
>>
>>223359828
Rico and the NBC robot were badass! Hershey was sexy af!
>>
>>223359325
Except literally everything about Judge Dredd was accurate though. Literally nothing from Dredd was. Like Jack Fucking Shit was accurate. What, he kept his helmet on and you think that's all that makes Judge Dredd? You stupid, simple dumb fuck.
>>
Dredd was a horrendous adaptation and a mediocre movie. Judge Dredd is a spot on adaptation and a mediocre movie. By that metric Stallone wins.
>>
>>223361265
Miniatures and full scale cities. They should have never gotten away from it. CGI can't replicate the feeling even if it can make it 100x more complex.
>>
>>223361881
Oh shit, I fell really humbled now. But since I am a bit retarded, can you please elaborate on what exactly was so accurate about '95? I really want to learn and be a better man.
>>
>>223359070
Ruined by that stupid kike they put in there.
>>
>>223359070
The only bad thing about this movie is Rob Schneider
>>

>>
>>223359070
Rewatched this recently, after only having seen it as a kid.

Unironically better than 90% of movies that have come out in the last few years. Actually, maybe more than 90%.

It has a lot of problems obviously, the biggest one being ROB SCHNEIDER, but current films often don't even function on a basic narrative level and have characters that make ROB's characters seem like masterpieces by comparison. Shit's so fucking bad these days, man. But I digress. Anyway, pretty good film desu.

the karl urnan movie is a mystery to me. i've seen it being praised to hell and back.
finally watch it.
it's literally an ultra budget TV tier episode with barely any action
what.
>>
>>223362534
Reddit movie.
>>
bad Dredd movie, but a p. good generic 90s summer action movie
>>
>>223362534
>barely any action
what.
>>
>>223359070
This generation has shit taste anon. For whatever reason they prefer the grounded, more realistic and sterile aesthetic over an aesthetic that embraces the stylistic whimsy of second order representation, it´s exaggerated nature and transportative imagination. That lack of romanticism and identity can be distinctly noted on the works of Nolan, Villeneuve, Eggers and off course on things like 2012 Dredd and Total Recall as well. Even SW is like that as well. It´s a systematic trend.
>>
>>223362534
It's cheesy as fuck. The "Cursed Earth" is simply a mexican desert. The "Mega City" is simply a normal sized city with a few spread out giant skyscraper apartment buildings. The Judge motorcycles are normal ground bikes with a few shitty plastic fairings slapped on. They look very stupid. Wowzers, such amazing scifi. It's not Judge Dredd whatsoever, but zoomies were told their opinion to like it because Urban keeps his helmet on (SOI FACE!) and he frowns the whole movies!
>>
>>223363097
It's easy to look back now with nostalgia goggles on and cherry-picker in hand, but in the 90s there were too many corny bullshit films like Stallone's Dredd. Twister, Volcano, Schumacher's Batman, Armageddon, Cliffhanger, Independence Day, Stargate, Kevin Costner's films, etc. Audiences grew tired of these live-action cartoons because Hollywood churned them out in abundance.
>>
>>223359070
rico carried that movie.
>>
>>223359070
its a shame really. van damme movies are so low rated for no goddamn reason. street fighter is like a 4. also actually good movies like demolition man being in the 6.x is a travesty.
>>
>>223363257
You suck and are gay
>>
>>223359801
>But the sidekick was a hundred steps too far in the wrong direction.
This. I can enjoy all kinds of "bad" and "cheesy" sci fi, but Rob Schneider really harms this film. They vastly overused him in too many scenes and he really is a poor match for the material. It makes rewatching this film a chore.
>>
The only issue i have with the 95' film is he takes his helmet off. the first 10 minutes are Dredd Kino.
Other than that issue It's fairly good. Up their with Demolition Man, easily.
Dredd 2012 was clearly cheaper but i respect whatsisface for never taking the helmet off. That's one key thing that should always be the case in Judge Dredd fiction.
>>
>>223361371
it should have been R rated from the get go. Super retarded it tried to be a pg-13 in a time where they were beginning to crack down on film's marketed to kids but actually adults like in the 80's (like Robocop, Rambo etc.)

do you mean...
ROOOOOOOB SCHNIEDEEEER?

(if so yes, really brings the film down. not that a comic relif would have hurt, the actual Judge Dredd stories have plenty of zany characters, he should have just been used sparingly and more intresting characters fill in but Dredd be the constant.

Where the fuck is muh CHOPPER btw?

>>223359450
Fun fact: Fergie is akshully from the comic.
>>
There are so many locations in Judge Dredd that would make good movies. It's a really under-developed series.
>>
>>223363257
Who is cherry picking now? There are plenty of actually good movies that use stylistic lighting, exaggerated acting and art design to enhance the narrative experience by creating atmosphere or highlighting emotion. It has nothing to do with nostalgia, the movies are just better because both the movies and the audience are aware that these are stories.

Burton´s Batman is objectively better than Nolan´s in the same way that Lynch´s dune is objectively superior to Villeneuve Dunc or Raimi´s Spiderman is superior to the other renditions. In fact nothing on the MCU comes even close to movies like fucking Dick Tracy, The Rocketeer or Sin City. This is so simply because these movies accept themselves as comic books playing out on the big screen, they don´t hide it or run from it.

Current movies and, maybe more importantly, current audiences on the other hand seem content with pretending otherwise. It almost feels like they are ashamed. I hope they never find out CGI is just animation... god knows how they´ll react.
>>
>>223362534
I think most of the people who like Dredd don't really know anything about Judge Dredd. Just some vague idea that its 'badass'
>>
reddit retard thread
>>
>>223365548
They don't. They ask what their opinion should be, get told that people decades ago were upset about a helmet being taken off, then repeat endlessly in a frothing rage "new thing good because helmet on 10/10; old thing bad because helmet off 0/10". They don't give a shit or even know what it means. They're good little npcs
>>
>>223362393
they should do a director's cut with schneider cut out or reduced to a minimum and all the gore they cut out put back in - like the ABC robot ripping people apart (you can briefly see the aftermath in the released version)

The sad thing about Judge Dredd movies is that if you combined elements of the 1995 and 2012 ones you would probably come out with one decent movie.
>>
>>223359070
I never understood the hate towards Judge Dredd 1995. Must be a Mike Stoklasa thing. It's unbelievable how many decent old movies were massacred by reviewers and internet smartasses back then.
>>
>>223359801
>hundred steps too far in the wrong direction
Gen X - bitter losers and pretentious faggots, all of them
>>
>>223362272
>no response
Kek blew that faggot out
>>
>>223359070
I like them both, they both have their positives and negatives. But of the two I would say I prefer the 2012 version, even if it is more like the Nolan Batman version of Judge Dredd, while the 1995 version was more faithful to what the comics were like at the time.
>>
>>223365612
the old one was worse than it should've been because of stallone. helmet off so people could see the movie star stallone and not the character dredd. pg-13 with comedy sidekick instead of violent R-rated dark comedy to get more butts in seats. it had the makings of a decent dredd movie via props and costumes, but they fumbled the characters and plot. the director did not have enough spine to push a vision of judge dredd the comic book character and say "no" to stallone and producers
>>
>>223361371
>Licence to Kill
My favorite bond movie. It's the only one where he actually behaves like a spy. Infiltrating an organization under a cover identity to weaken it from the inside until it can be destroyed.
>>
>>223365828
>violent R-rated dark comedy
You have never read a Judge Dredd comic. It's only violent if you're 10 years old and didn't get your share of red pixels in video games.
>>
>>223365875
ok fine I was making a contrast. I am aware that the comic is not that. it can be goofy as fuck, but not constantly. my point is they made a 90s comedy flick starring stallone, that was the headline. the dredd universe was just literal set dressing and dredd became a caricature, not a character.
>>
>>223365751
Genre movies were generally just viewed negatively. For instance, The Thing got terrible reviews when it came out.
>>
>>223362511
This, and I don't even dislike Schneider, but the movie despite being kinda goofy is a thousand times more enjoyable than a lot of what's come out recently.
>>
it's fine. You get the best and worst of 90's action movies. Great sets, great practical effects, cheesy (in a good way) plot, forced comedy bullshit that feels very out of place, and a lead actor who isn't a good fit for the role.
>>
Dredd was badass. The corny 90s Stallone vehicle wasn't.
>>

why do you want realism in a movie based on a cheesy comic book? I don't remember much about it but it would have been cooler if Judge Death was in it slaying Fatties. the ABC warrior bit was cinema
>>
>>223365548
Shit take about a shitty flick. I was reading the comics at the time Dredd 95 came out and even as a retarded kid I knew the movie was dogshite.
Funny reading all coping going on in the letters to the editor page around the time. Might go up to the attic and see if I can dig out a few mags from the time, take a trip down memory lane.
Also the movie was so far removed from the source that they fucking published a Stallone version of the comic so as not to confuse retards like yourself

I don't get why fans claim that the comics were some clever satire on police/violence/america/etc.
Of all the Dredd comics ive read they are mostly just straight ahead Sci Fi adventure comics. Not really any satire in 90% of the comics

I saw it when it came out - it was never considered bad. Batman and Robin was. Judge Dredd was Mortal Kombat level - dumb, but in a good way.

JD'95 was always overhated. The helmet nerds were very vocal, even then

Because a jew wrote so 30 years ago

They should have forced Stallone to keep his helmet on until Dredd gets exiled. I think that would have been a better compromise, having him just take it off for no reason at the start was really dumb.

I still fucking love this movie for how well it nailed that dirty ass cyperpunk aesthetic though.

No because it obviously sucks. This apologism about it being like the comics just because the comics could be goofy and funny too is so fucking dumb. The comics could also be serious or somewhere inbetween, and the humor in Judge Dredd is just typical 90s action flick bullshit.
